brownie Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 They may be uneven but I'll be glad when they come out. Great news... Quote
Guest Chaney Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 So... this Andrew Hill. He's pretty good? Really terrific FRONT PAGE news! Quote
couw Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 let's hope there aren't too many trainwrecks after all, and some of this really sees the light of day.... one never knows Quote
White Lightning Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 More Hill!!! More Rivers!!! More Shaw!!! More Tolliver!!! Quote
Late Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Very exciting news. If this one can come out, perhaps the complete New York Art Quartet recordings (with the ESP aside) can come out. Note that Andrew plays curved soprano on the Chained session. There's actually a photo of him with this horn in the Wolff book. The tray insert photos from Passing Ships and Grass Roots, which are actually the same photo, are also, I'm pretty sure, from the Chained session. It will be very interesting to hear how Andrew approached the saxophone. Didn't he start off as a saxophone player? It will also be very interesting to hear Robin Kenyatta play Andrew's music. Man, I hope this one truly does come out. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Man, I'm excited! Not sure about Sangrey though. Quote
sheldonm Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 ....and one more way to get that post count up (as if you need it!). Quote
bertrand Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Rooster, Weren't there six tracks on One For One? Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Add from Session #5: August 1st, 1969 Bennie Maupin-1 (fl, ts) Andrew Hill (p) Ron Carter (ba) Mickey Roker (dm) Plus a string quartet: Sanford Allen, Al Brown, Selwart Clarke, Kermit Moore (v, v, viola, cello) 2. Fragments Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 Thanks Jim. I just confirmed that in the discography, and I missed "Fragments". Jim, if you wanna delete your post right above this, I'll update the big post with all the session info (and then delete this post -- and we can pretend this never happened. ) Quote
JSngry Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Rooster, Weren't there six tracks on One For One? Bertrand. Technically, there were 11. Five were the session w/Hubbard & Henderson that made it to the Mosaic. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 (edited) Oh, my goodness... The only hard question is do I sell my copy of One For One now or wait to make sure, oh never mind it's the only way I've got that other session (mentioned above). I think I can live with this small duplication... Edited May 12, 2004 by danasgoodstuff Quote
mikeweil Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I'm a big fan of these sessions with Maupin, so this will find its way into my collection, for sure! Let's all keep our thumbs crossed! Quote
jlhoots Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I'll certainly buy this if it comes out - but what about Compulsion & Andrew!!! I know - that's being "greedy". Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Cool! It seems like an ideal set for the Select series. I've been intrigued by these sessions ever since reading about them in the original Hill Mosaic booklet. Quote
king ubu Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 This is terrific news! Thanks for sharing, Rooster, and thanks for insisting (maybe you DID have some influence, only God knows, if he then exists...) ubu Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 (edited) I don't expect them all to be good. I expect some, maybe even most, to be problematic in one way or another. BUT I DON'T CARE! This is a "silent period" of a major artist, a period that has long had me curious (notably re:Leonard Feather's assertation in the ONE FOR ONE liner notes that this was a "difficult" time for Hill, whatever that may or may not mean...) and the historical importance of these sessions will outweigh any such matters. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â My thought is that they can't be all that choppy, if both Michael and Andrew are in agreement about releasing them. Sure, there'll be rough places, and stuff that coulda had more (or better quality) rehearsal time. Still, I'll take a "off-day" Andrew Hill session any day, over a whole hell of a lot of other things that I can think of (but I won't name names). It's like "Passing Ships" -- all over again!!! EDIT: And obviously (picking up on Jim's post that I'm quoting)... -- I DON'T CARE EITHER!! - if there's problems with some or most of these sessions. Edited May 12, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
alankin Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 (edited) Session #6: January 16th, 1970 Pat Patrick (fl, as, bs) Hey, I think Pat Patrick deserves to be bolded as well! Edited May 12, 2004 by alankin Quote
Late Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Man, you are a dreamer... sweet dreams but highly unlikely. ... Good luck untangling all or any of those Fontana sides from whatever legal netherworld they exist in ... Maybe I am a dreamer. I did e-mail Cuscuna about a year ago, however, regarding this very topic. He replied that he'd love to do it, and would — given the go-ahead from Universal, who owns the rights to most (if not all) of this stuff. Some of it was actually recorded at that place ... what's it called ... some studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Never heard of it. Quote
marcoliv Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 this is FANTASTIC news indeed!!!!!! thanks for sharing this Tom why jazz lovers should wait so long to get stuff like that???? i want this NOW!!!! Marcus Quote
couw Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 seriously, not to make my previous post sound too silly, we know Hill has been rather critical of his releases. Has he heard the tapes again and has he given the green light already or is this still more in the planning phase? I can imagine that some stuff we die to hear will not be included simply because Hill doesn't want it to be heard. That's what I meant with "trainwrecks." To indicate a reluctance from the artist/producer side to put certain stuff out there. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) Well, I guess only time will tell. Hopefully most of the material will see the light of day, and I suspect there's at least a decent chance that all of it will (given what Michael has said most recently). Before today, however, I would have never guessed that Andrew would green-light this. Maybe one or two sessions, perhaps (at most), but to get all of it - was really something I never expected to fly. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed... Edited May 13, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
