Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 What's significant about the year 1974, and Steel Pans in Jazz Settings?? /totally clueless about Steel Pans in Jazz Settings, pre-1974, or post-1974. Quote
rockefeller center Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 What's significant about the year 1974, and Steel Pans in Jazz Settings?? There's no significance. I have a 1974 recording, probably falling into the Jazz category, that has steel pans. Just curious if anybody used steel pans in this genre before. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 My oldest is Listen featuring Mel Martin with Andy Narell, recorded 1975 - 1977, on Inner City IC 1025. What is yours, BTW? Taj Mahal used Andy Narell on his 1971 LP Happy Just To Be Like I Am, but that's not jazz. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Max Roach's percussion group M'Boom used a steeldrum (Roy Brooks played it most of the time), but I don't remember if it is heard on their 1972 LP; it definitely was used on their 1980 Columbia LP. Quote

I never heard of these guys. How is the recording you mentioned (AMG has no samples)? The oldest pans stuff I've heard so far, is one track from Jaco Pastorius' 1974 demo recording with Othello Molineaux on steel pans. Quote

Thanks. I think I'll try to find these. Quote
tooter Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Earliest I could find is Monty Alexander's [Cobilimbo] but that was recorded in Germany September 8 - 9, 1977. "Vincent Taylor plays double tenor steel pans, hand crafted by himself." I also found a reference to Roland Prince's [Color Visions] released in 1976 - Art Jardine on steel drums. Doubt if it fits the criteria (plural). Quote
JSngry Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Pretty sure there was a Ray Mantilla's Space Station album from the latter 70s w/steel drums featured. But that. of course, would not be pre-1974. Quote
