  1. It's that time of year again! It's time for the annual Grey Cup contest. Past winners have included Noj (twice), indestructible, Bright Moments, brownie, paul secor, Soulstation1, danasgoodstuff, B. Clugston, ejp626 (twice) and BFrank. Here are the rules: 1) Pick the winning team. 2) Pick the number of total points scored by both teams (aka the tiebreaker). Since approximately half of us will pick the winning team, picking the total points is necessary to win the contest. Your total points prediction must be a number which is a multiple of five (5). The winning tiebreaker will be the one closest to the correct answer. If two are equally close, the winner will be the lower pick. If two people pick the same thing, the first to make the pick will be the winner. THE PRIZE: A $17.00 Mosaic Records Gift Card. The $17.00 represents one CD of a Mosaic box set. Deadline: Sunday Nov. 25, 6:00 pm eastern ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 106th Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Calgary Stampeders face the Eastern champion Ottawa Redblacks. These two teams met two years ago, and the Redblacks won in a huge upset. This will be Ottawa's third Grey Cup game in the past four years. But that's nothing. It will be Calgary's fifth in the past seven years. Calgary's long term success has been due primarily (IMO) to their General Manager John Hufnagel. The Stampeders went undefeated in 1948. One of their players that year was one of the first great black pro football players, Woody Strode. He later became an actor with a significant role in Spartacus. This year, the Stampeders were again the best team in the league, until after they clinched a playoff spot. Their quarterback is Bo Levi Mitchell, who played for Eastern Washington U. He won the Most Outstanding Player Award two years ago, and will likely win it again Thursday night. The Ottawa Redblacks were an expansion team in 2014. They were the best Eastern team this year, but were not consistent. Their quarterback is Trevor Harris, who played his college ball at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Edmonton, which is just up the road from Calgary. Eastern fans always root for the Eastern champion, and Western fans always root for the Western champion. I fully expect the vast majority of the crowd to be cheering on the Stampeders. The game will be carried live in the US on ESPN2, starting at 6:00 pm eastern Sunday. You can listen to the game here: http://www.tsn.ca/radio (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. So you might want to plan ahead if you don't already have it.) You can study articles analyzing the upcoming game as well as articles about the season as it unfolded in the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. Good luck everyone! ***** Here's my pick: I'm going to do you a favor. I expect Calgary to win, and win big. So I'm going to go with the Redblacks. Ottawa - 50

Deadline: Sunday Nov. 27, 6:00 pm eastern ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 104th Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Calgary Stampeders face the Eastern champion Ottawa Redblacks. The Stampeders went undefeated in 1948. One of their players that year was one of the first great black pro football players, Woody Strode. He later became an actor with a significant role in Spartacus. This year, the Stampeders lost their first game, and did not lose again until their last game when they gave most of their starters the day off. For the past month or so, Canadian sportswriters have speculated that the 2016 Stampeders are the best team ever. Their quarterback is Bo Levi Mitchell, who played for Eastern Washington U. He is expected to be the unanimous choice for Most Outstanding Player . The Ottawa Redblacks were an expansion team two years ago, and have been the Eastern champions last year as well as this year! Ottawa last won the Grey Cup in 1976 when their team was the Rough Riders. This year, the Redblacks became the first team in league history to finish first with a losing record (7-8-1). The Redblacks' quarterback is 41-year old Henry Burris, who played his college ball at Temple. They have an excellent backup in Trevor Harris, who played for Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Toronto. Eastern fans always root for the Eastern champion, and Western fans always root for the Western champion. Toronto is an Eastern city, but it traditionally has been considered a neutral site because it is so easy for all Canadians to travel to. The game will be carried live in the US on ESPN2, starting at 6:00 pm eastern Sunday. You can listen to the game here: http://www.tsn.ca/radio (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. You can study articles analyzing the upcoming game as well as articles about the season as it unfolded in the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. Good luck everyone! ***** Here's my pick: Calgary - 50 The fact is, if Calgary is one of the greatest teams ever, and since Ottawa finished with a losing record, if Ottawa wins this game I think it would be fair to call it the biggest upset in Grey Cup history.

Deadline: Sunday Nov. 29, 6:00 pm eastern ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 103rd Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Edmonton Eskimos face the Eastern champion Ottawa Redblacks. The Eskimos have won the most Grey Cups in my lifetime. Warren Moon played for them his first six years as a pro, winning five Grey Cups. The Ottawa Redblacks were an expansion team last year!!! This will be Ottawa's first trip to the Grey Cup game since 1981. Ottawa last won the Grey Cup in 1976 when their team was the Rough Riders. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Winnipeg. Eastern fans always root for the Eastern champion, and Western fans always root for the Western champion. Winnipeg is a Western city, so normally I would expect the majority in attendance to root for the western team (Edmonton). However, Ottawa will certainly be Canada's sentimental favorite because Ottawa's teams have stunk for so many decades. Throughout the year, the league's two best teams were the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders. Both teams finished the season with 14-4 records. Edmonton soundly defeated Calgary in the Western Final Sunday 45-31. The Eskimos have now won nine straight games. The Redblacks won only 2 games last year, and surprised everyone by finishing first in the East with a 12-6 record. The Eskimos' quarterback is 30-year old Mike Reilly, who played his college ball at Central Washington. The past two years, he has been voted by the players as the toughest player in the league! The Redblacks' quarterback is 40-year old Henry Burris, who played his college ball at Temple.. Burris is the Eastern nominee for Most Outstanding Player. That award will be given out Thursday. The game will be carried live in the US on ESPN2. ***** Here's my pick: Ottawa - 50 The fact is, I don't think the Redblacks have a chance. The Eskimos are a far better team. But because the Redblacks are the sentimental favorite, I will be pulling for them, and I will pick them.
  4. It's that time of year again! It's time for the annual Grey Cup contest. (Past winners have included Noj (twice), indestructible, Bright Moments, brownie, paul secor, Soulstation1 and danasgoodstuff.) That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 102nd Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Calgary Stampeders face the Eastern champion Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Vancouver. The Hamilton Tigers were founded in 1869, the same year as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The Calgary Stampeders were known as the Bronks from their founding in 1935 through 1944. The Calgary fans of 1948 are credited with descending upon Toronto for the Grey Cup game, and making the Grey Cup the national celebration that it has been ever since. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Vancouver. Eastern fans always root for the eastern champion, and Western fans always root for the Western champion. Last week there were still 6,500 tickets to be sold. Probably more Western fans bought tickets far in advance, but I suspect that many Hamilton fans will gobble up most of those remaining 6,500 seats. The Stampeders had the best record in the league during the regular season, 15-3. The Ticats started badly at 1-6, and at the season's midway point they were 2-7. Since then they have gone 7-2, plus their win in the Eastern Final. Both teams have very young quarterbacks. Calgary's is Bo Levi Mitchell, a 24-year old who played his college ball at SMU and Eastern Washington. Hamilton's is Zach Collaros, a 26-year old who played his college ball with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Calgary's star is their running back Jon Cornish. He was a monster this year when he played, but he missed half the season with a couple of concussions. The press voted Collaros as Hamilton's best player. The game will be carried live in the US on ESPN2. You can listen to the game here: http://www.tsn.ca/Toronto/ (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. So you might want to plan ahead if you don't already have it.) You can study articles analyzing the upcoming game as well as articles about the season as it unfolded in the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. Good luck everyone! Here's my pick: Calgary - 50 I'm going to be rooting for the Ticats. They have not won the Grey Cup since 1999. In addition, I have met their owner, Bob Young, who is very personable, and who lives in suburban Raleigh. But I think that the Stampeders' offense has too much firepower. ***** 11/24 update - Here's a list of some of the websites which will carry the radio broadcast of the game. http://www.tsn.ca/radio

Therefore, this year's will be the 101st Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. This year's game will see the Western champion Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Eastern champion Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This is a surprise because both teams finished second during the regular season, and had to defeat the first place team on the road to win their division championships. The Hamilton Tigers were founded in 1869, the same year as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The Saskatchewan Roughriders were founded in 1910, and are a mere 103 years old. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan fans are considered the best in the league. In addition, the Riders are the most popular team in the league because they are everybody's second favorite team. The Riders will clearly enjoy a home field advantage. The Riders are without question the better of the two teams. I think that all but one of their losses occurred when their star running back Kory Sheets was on the injured list. On the other hand, Hamilton's quarterback Henry Burris led the league in passing again this year, and is no doubt a better quarterback than Saskatchewan's Darian Durant. Burris went to Temple. Durant went to UNC. The game will be carried live on the NBC Sports cable TV channel. You can listen to the game here: http://www.tsn.ca/Toronto/ (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. Here's my pick: Saskatchewan - 50 It's very hard to pick against Henry Burris, but I think that the Riders' home field advantage will make the difference.
  6. It's that time of year again! It's time for the annual Grey Cup contest. (Past winners have included Noj (twice), indestructible, Bright Moments, brownie and paul secor.) If two people pick the same thing, the first to make the pick will be the winner. THE PRIZE: A $17.00 Mosaic Records Gift Certificate, good for both Mosaic and True Blue records. The $17.00 represents one CD of a Mosaic box set. Deadline: kickoff, Sunday Nov. 25, 6:00 pm eastern. ***** The Grey Cup game: The Grey Cup is awarded to the world champion of what I think is the greatest game in the world, Canadian rules football. That is to say, the champion of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909. They have played for it every year since then except three years during World War One. Therefore, this year's will be the 100th Grey Cup game. Fans from throughout Canada will attend the game. The game sold out within 48 hours of tickets going on sale back in June. Therefore, neither team is expected to have an obvious majority of the fans rooting for them. This year's game will see the Eastern champion Toronto Argonauts host the Western champion Calgary Stampeders. This is a surprise because both teams finished second during the regular season, and had to defeat the first place team on the road to win their conference championships. The location of the game is chosen years in advance. This year's game will be played in Toronto because the league felt that Canada's largest city should host the festivities for the hundredth Grey Cup game. Calgary's starting quarterback was injured fairly early in the season. He was replaced by back-up Kevin Glenn, who has spent much of his career as a starter. The Stampeders had a good year. The Argos had a mediocre year because both their offensive and defensive lines are suspect. Their quarterback is Ricky Ray, who twice won the Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos. Ray is a future Hall of Famer who came to the Argos in a major trade last winter. The game will be carried live on the NBC sports cable TV channel. The halftime show will feature Canadians Gordon Lightfoot and Justin Bieber. You can listen to the game here: http://tunein.com/radio/Team-1410-s31148/ http://tunein.com/radio/AM-770-s31172/ (To listen to the game, you will need Windows Media Player which you can download for free. So you might want to plan ahead if you don't already have it.) You can study articles analyzing the upcoming game as well as articles about the season as it unfolded in the CFL thread, which I will be updating during the course of this week. Good luck everyone! Here's my pick: (My heart says Argos, but my head says Stampeders.) Calgary - 50 points PS - It looks like CJOB will not carry the Grey Cup game this year, so I have substituted the URLs of the Vancouver and Calgary stations above.
