  1. Another recent Night Lights program, exploring pianist Herbie Hancock's powerful emergence on the 1960s jazz scene, up for online listening: Maiden Voyage: Herbie Hancock In The 1960s
  2. well, I caught a lot of shit recently for positing that Lennie Tristano was a prime influence on Herbie Hancock. So I'm watching the Steve Allen Show clip of Miles doing Kind of Blue from 1964; some way through Herbie's solo, what does he do? A minute or so of pure Tristano derivatives (it occurs, on the clip I watched, at 7:39) based on a classic Lennie phrase device. Take that you yahoos, and never question the great Allini's musical judgment ever again. I forgive you, tempted as I am to smote you all (or I might say: Stryker 3, you're out) -
  3. This summer: Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington announce joint tour From the above article as well: >>Washington is also headlining at Newport, on Aug. 3, but that's far from the only synchronicity he has with his co-headliner. Terrace Martin, a longtime Washington associate, is another one. (It seems likely that Martin will also play with Washington on the tour.) Hancock and Washington also both appeared on You're Dead!, the 2014 album by producer Flying Lotus. And there have been reliable reports that Hancock's next album-in-progress will feature Washington (along with Martin, Flying Lotus and rapper Kendrick Lamar). <<
