Peter, speaking of Rochester and those Monitor Audio Bronze BX - 6 loud speakers I noted above. They can be had for $999.00 from Audio Renaissance in Rochester.

Yes, I have it and like it a lot.

Re: The Hideout – Milestone 9340 (4/2003-3/2004) As I recall, Joe Locke was hired to do a huge amount of fixing/sweeting/corrections and general post production work on that one.

Have her check out this company: http://www.monitoraudiousa.com/products/bronze-bx/ They make a wide range of speakers. I've heard their Bronze Series. Perfect sound and beautifully made.

I knew him a little. My friend Barry Kiener played with him in Buddy's band and on Turk's "The Heavyweight" recording. He played baritone and was a real jerk ( I'm being polite), in my opinion.

In Whitney Balliett's profile of Elvin Jones, Elvin tell that his pianist Billy Greene first told him about Coltrane's death, so I would say he was/is a real person.

Happy Birthday, Mike!!

Maybe you can't call it a official "meeting" but in the Fall of 1968, when I was 14 I worked as a barback and busboy at a club called Duffy's Backstage in Rochester. I started working there as they needed extra help because Miles was there for a week and I was a friend the the owner's lazy son. During the first afternoon, as he was rehearsing the band and I was making the usual noises that a barback makes with the ice and glasses, Miles got on the mike and told the owner to get me the hell out of there, or words to that effect, and this rather effeminate valet Miles traveled with came running over waving his hands. Scared the hell out of me. For some reason I remember what they were paid: $5500 for the week. That band had Tony Williams in it for sure, and maybe Chick Corea also. The following Summer they brought Miles back again, this time Jack DeJohnette was on drums.

It might be from DownBeat, August 1998 edition.

I love Afirmation. Really great song! Al Gafa did a wonderful version of it also on the neglected Leblon Beach. A quck aside: I met Jose' Feliciano ( "Call me Jose" [ like Hose] )quickly when he was eating a lunch next to me at Kennedy Airport this last October. I never impose on people I recognize like this, but after we both finished eating and I rose to leave, I wanted to tell him I dug his version on the Star Spangled Banner that he sung during the baseball playoffs. He couldn't have been nicer and we talked Yankee baseball for a while. He then insisted on putting me and my wife on a guest list for his performance at BB Kings that December ( his manager was with him) , even though I told him I couldn't make it, so he gave me his personal email and gave me a open invitation whenever we had time. A really nice man.

"The Greatest Love of All" is a song written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed and originally recorded by George Benson for the 1977Muhammad Ali biopic The Greatest.

I remember this when it came out. I'm not too surprised that he couldn't identify Moody. I know I couldn't either, but he comments on Coleman Hawkins / Don Byas are off base, and he obviously hasn't listen to Zoot Sims very much and even less of Lockjaw Davis. I also think he off base about the Tim Garland song. Not everybody writes like that at all! Tim is unique and a real composer. A fantastic reed player also. One of my favs. I have to love him for the Joe Locke props! By the way, I feel that Branford is a protean tenor saxophonist.

Oh, I get it now; you really have no real idea of what your talking about! So, to lecture you back, Professor: Yes, the title of "Bird Lives" is somewhat objectionable to many ( but not as much as "Jazz Junkies", and the book itself ( along with Albert Goldman) is filled with embellishment and outright lies. I know what a triptych ( correct spelling) is, by the way. I have a Masters in Fine Arts too! Too be fair, that concept/use is a nice idea, no matter how misguided. Do I know of the Beats? Better than you, I'm afraid. There was a time, many years ago, when I had a more than a passing friendship with Robert Creeley when we he taught in Buffalo. A deeper thinker than yourself, I might say. Huncke? Now there's a degenerate Times Square junkie for you. Too bad you couldn't hang with him for a week or so so he could show you how enlighten he was. I really don't want to see your next Kickstarter campaign on the Beats. I'm going to stop. This is really not worth the effort. You live in the Bay Area? I suggest that you take a field trip to the seeder parts of Oakland or the Tenderloin for a month or so and tell us of your insights if and when you come back. It may do your art some good. -

I'm sorry, but in this house, to stamp the banner of "Jazz Junkies" over theses great artists is a the very least insensitive to their legacy and importance, anyway you coat it. Your statement: "I was trying to show that being a junkie can expose you to the infinite" baffles me. The infinite misery? The infinite waste? Being high on opiates give you insight to the Infinite? In my experience opiates turn people into a real despicable assholes at best, so I have to call you out there. That monkey on Chet Baker's back is a nice touch, though. -
I have "Water" and there are some songs I really like; some not. My jury is still out. I really don't understand his penchant for these hats with the flaps, though!

I used to see him play at a place called Syncopation on Waverly St in NYC quite a bit, and of course with RRK. It was always a pleasure.

On my way to see Vancouver saxophonist, club owner (The Cellar), and all around one man Jazz movement Cory Weeds, with a quintet that includes trombonist Steve Davis. -

Jim, I believe Video Arts ( actually I'm sure) is a Japanese label.
