  1. My daughter was asked to take up the French horn (she currently plays trumpet) next year for the school band / orchestra. I'm looking for recordings which highlight the horn to help familiarize her with the sound / capabilities of the instrument before she starts lessons this summer. Jazz, Classical, etc... any genre.
  2. I have their 10in vinyl release of the Guerin title. Its an excellent package with what I imagine is period correct flip / fold jacket. The cover art is excellent, as is the session.
  3. Catching up on threads so sorry to dredge up an old one. Congrats on the cart. LOVE the DV line and have stepped through the line up from 10x5 (on a Rega variant) to the 20X and have had an XX2 on the NA for 8+ years. I only wish they had a more "affordable" mono cart. I had to deviate from the DV line and go with an Ortofon cart for the mono setup. So to keep this timely, what are your impressions after six months of "break in?"
  4. I've been using the Osage regiment for a few years. Have not heard of Art du Son... Any one tried both for comparison's sake?
  5. I saw Breakthrough in the bins last week. Looks like I'll have to head back to grab it now. Thanks folks!
  6. Sorry to dredge up an old thread but does anyone have any information re: Malta, the illustrator of ML4841? The design was used with different color ways for other releases in this series as well.
  7. I'm in complete agreement here. What are people using for record-cleaning fluid? I use the Osage Audio / Audio Intelligent fluids. The No. 6 for most LP's, the No. 15 followed by the No. 6 for truly dirty LP's. Either way, I leave the fluid on the LP for 12 - 15 minutes before vacuuming.
  8. Another +1 for VPI 16.5. Mine has been going strong for over 10 years without a problem... unless you count the vacuum tube I dropped and crushed when I stepped on it. Friend has an ultrasonic machine which is unreal (cost and performance). Clean records on my VPI are even cleaner / quieter after cleaning on his machine. Amazing....
  9. Waiting for the fam to wake up...
  10. Day late on this but maybe they have some boxes left over... $75 each on Thursday, half that on Friday, maybe even less now? http://www.soulisestatesales.com/ http://dirksoulisauctions.com/Gallery.php?Title=Slater Estate Sale&Gallery=SES2015-08-27-Slater Boxes are in the last pic in the second row. Friend tipped me onto this late last week but I was in ATL. Good luck!
  11. Wayne Shorter on sax.
  12. Meh. Didn't do enough research before picking it up. Something seemed wrong from the get go so I compared Let It Be and Hootenanny to my originals and confirmed what sounded like a different take / mix. Sure enough, I found a thread on the interwebs (Hoffman, I think) that confirmed that Rhino used the same digital masters as the 2007/2008 CD's which included edits, truncated tracks, and all sorts of butchering. Man, what happened to Rhino?
  13. Went to lunch with a bud in the HiFi biz and he handed me this to take for a spin. Audio Technica and Ortofon used to make similar devices but I've never tried either of them. Based on what I've seen with my loupe it certainly seems to do the trick... better than my usual regiment.
  14. Picked up four of the 2LP 45RPM BN titles at steep discount ($18 each) but was more excited to find two BeeHive's...
  15. Worst recent experience was an order from the Vintage Trouble site. The LP arrived in a large brown envelope with no cardboard support or even bubble wrap. Thankfully, the LP arrived intact!
  16. This is the second volume in the Miles 10" series. The first box was released last RSD Black Friday.
  17. Playing the heck out of this one lately.
  18. Thanks - I'm eyeing Barney. They're tough to find in the States and, aside from Dusty, usually priced at a premium. I asked them to consider the Sonny Criss Paris sessions in the future. We'll see...
  19. I've been listening to these for a few weeks and have really been enjoying them. Packaging and pressing are first rate. Both include a nice photo print as well. I don't have originals to compare these but do think they're a notch above the Polydor reissues my buddy has. More pics and commentary on my instagram account: Byrd in Paris: http://instagram.com/p/xqLwHAEiec/ Parisian Thoroughfare: http://instagram.com/p/xqRg9YkiVd/ Anyone else have an experience with other Sam Record releases? Edit - Added IG pics .
  20. I've been thinking about looking into this as well. I'm tired of finding Prestige originals / early pressing only to find they were pressed with crappy, noisy vinyl. Any idea if there are any differences between the AP's and the OJC's pressed at the same facility, presumably with the same plating?
  21. Booker Ervin - The Book Cooks. OG on Bethlehem. Jacket has seam splits and is around VG-, vinyl looks NM- with no spindle marks on either side. I'll have to wait until I get home later this week to see how it plays. I paid more than I normally would at $50 but it usually goes for way more than that.
  22. Herman Foster - Have You Heard. Original promo copy on epic. Love him on the Donaldson records. First time I've seen his solo stuff on vinyl.
  23. Nothing like flying home to find a package from Dusty Groove. Spinning the Sam Records reissues of Donald Byrd's Jazz in Paris and Parisian Thoroughfare. Despite a couple of drop outs on PT, both of these sound gorgeous. All analog mastering from the original master tapes, fold back jackets to mimic the originals, cover photo and photo print from original negatives, 180g vinyl is dead flat and plays it too. So, so good...
  24. Original Mal / 2 on Prestige. Jacket has two random pieces of tape in front and two "Not For Sale" stamps in back. LP plays really, really nicely after cleaning on the VPI.... $20.
