CTI reissues: box-set, 1971 concert, single titles
Matthew replied to ghost of miles's topic in Re-issues
Johnny Hamond's Gambler's Life is an interesting cd, he does not play the organ, but plays a Fender Rhodes throughout the session (the cd has four other cuts from different albums), and it is arranged and produced by Larry Mizell of Blue Note fame / infamy. The sound is heavily layered, with percussion, wah-wah guitars, and vocals, some wordless, some with lyrics, that are layered also, forming the basis of each number. The only solos you hear are by Hammond, and after awhile, things start to sound the same. It's still good, but I don't think it's a cd that will get constant rotation on my player, it seems like a "mood cd," if you know what I mean. Hurbert Laws The Chicago Theme has Bob James doing most of the arranging, and is more low key than Hammond's. Laws solos on each song, and a host of others make appearances -- there are no less that thirty-one musicians listed. Both albums were recorded in 1974, and have that early '70 feel to them. Overall, I prefer the Laws' cd, as it is less frenetic than Gambler's Life, and seems more musical, while Gambler's Life seems centered on creating an atmosphere. I'm glad I have both, but if I saw both cds in front of me, I would recommend The Chicago Theme first. edit for spelling -
Michigan State vs. Purdue, while listening to cds. Am I the only one who listens to music while watching sports with the sound off?

They did one album by the New York Jazz Quartet (Frank Wess, Roland Hanna, I forget the other two...) & one, I think, by Airto. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Thanks, I'll have to look for these next time at Amoeba. -
Hey! I just noticed the thread preview button, nice!

I really is. I was in charge of a K-8 school, and it was an amazing experience, the legalities involved were something else. Just sending a kid home, you had to physically see a kid be with the parent / assigned person, and if it was someone different, you had to call the parent to confirm that, yes, this person had permission to pick the child up. Kid wants to walk home? sign a release, or he can't. Want to hang around school afterward? Pay for aftercare or get off the property. It was a whole different ballgame from when I was a kid.

You're breaking my wallet between this and Thin Lizzy!

The screwdriver worked the best. I pried open the cd tray, and it still works. I know everyone was in suspense of whether I was able to retrieve my Free cd or not.

In what world is Lester Young: Jazz Giants '56 not a towering artistic achievement? Not in a world I want to live in, that's for sure...

Is there an equivalent app for BlackBerry?

Yes, they did issues a lot of music on tape. When I first became interested in BN's (in Berkeley, CA, in the '80s), cassettes were the only thing I bought, and I thought they sounded great -- still do.

This one makes the most sense to me, never thought of that. Or, go to plan B:

I have a NAD C 541i cd player, and I can't get a cd out of it now, it's stuck. Anyone know how to get the cd trey to open without having to take it in somewhere?

I was there for that play. Amazing, the first curtain call in San Diego history. Saw Dave Weinfield's first home run also, (Weinfield loved showing off his arm during fielding practice); saw Randy Jones pitch a 91 minute game against the Phillies (Pete Rose was so frustrated with Jones, he batted left handed against him for awhile -- now that's pure trivia!); saw him blow out his arm also; saw Pete Rose flip off the crowd giving him a bad time (the year after the Bud Harrellson fight). And yes, it was baseball played on natural grass. I wasted my youth watching Padre games, but I guess there were worse ways for a teenager to spend his free time.

I use to love coming early to a game just so I could watch infield practice, watching Ozzie Smith was a thing of beauty. It was so much fun to see the great players strut their stuff during practice. *Sigh* They don't do that anymore either, too taxing on the players. Just another aspect of the game I miss from the old days.

Unfortunately, the school district is afraid of lawsuits. If the kid does something violent in the future (and I not talking about killing people either) they would be held liable if it was discovered that something like the drawing took place, the school knew about, and did nothing. Same with the police, they can't win on this case no matter how they handled it. Lawyers drive everything now...

http://www.boston.co...brenner_so.html Oh yes, the whole goal for MLB is to do what ever the Yankees want. I'm sure the Yankees, Red Sox, and all other "big market teams" would make so much more money in ten team AL & NL leagues. Well, that's the kind of leagues we have for Fox MLB Game of the Week, and look at what great ratings those games get. The one thing I really want to see in baseball is a team salary minimum, where a team has to spend a certain amount of money on their roster -- none of this putting a AAA team out there, don't pay them a cent, and make a big profit. But Hank, what a jerk.

I'm making an Amoeba run on Monday, hopefully they will be there. They weren't there today when I went. I'll try again in a couple of weeks, and hopefully at least Straight Life will be in the bins. PS: Got a ton of other CTI / Kudo stuff though... -
He played for 8 teams and wore out his welcome with each one. If there's a malcontent Hall of Fame he's a first ballot guy. Sheff is part of my all-time malcontent outfield: Sheff, Milton Bradley, and Carl Everett. I'm sure if I though hard enough, I could top this one though. albert(joey) belle, jimmy piersall? Might have to give Bell the nod. Carlos Zambrano is definitely the pitcher...

So the Mariners get him, try to make him a starter and he blows his arm out. Rather than being the fit & elegant man he is instead he's a fat bitter alcoholic in Panama for the past 12 some odd years. Glad the Yankees kept him. Back to reality (sort of) I'm foolishly hoping that Bedard (remember him?) might be healthy enough to make a difference this year. I know, I know, nothing like the optimism of spring, misplaced as it may be. And speaking of O's, even though the staff looks shaky I do wonder if Baltimore will be competitive this year. It'll require Adam Jones and some others to finally play to up to their potential, but every year has a surprise team, and Baltimore being good would indeed be a surprise. OH MY GOSH! Bedard? Well it is spring training, and it would be great in he come around and pitched something this year. I read where the Mariner's are bringing Griffey back, as an adviser. A guy walks out on the team, with no thanks, no advance warning, no nothing, and he's brought back? For what, to show the younger guys how to work a fax machine? Sometime I don't understand baseball management at all... People do change, Matthew. I agree with that Goody, but "The Kid" has a very long history of treating the Mariner's like crap. Plus, Griffey won't have Dave Niehaus (RIP ) running interference for him any more either.
