  1. Powell's my favorite novelist of the 20th Century. I belong to the Anthony Powell Discussion List: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/aplist/info and had the great pleasure of doing a long telephone interview with him in 1984. Talking to him was like dancing with Fred Astaire. That's amzing that you got to interview Powell, lucky man, and many thanks for the yahoo group link. Another Powell fan here. I read "Dance" some years ago, and hope to reread it again soon. I think "Dance" is much easier to get through than Proust. More recently, I read Powell's "The Fisher King," which I very much enjoyed. Apparently, critics don't care much for it, but don't let that deter you. It's worth reading. I also share an interest with Powell concerning John Aubrey, 17th century antiquary and biographer, perhaps best known to readers for his "Brief Lives." Powell wrote "John Aubrey and his Friends." Reading Aubrey and Powell together is a pleasant way to pass the time. Has anyone seen the tv adaption of ADTTMOT? Is it worth getting?
  2. Scrubs -- Season 1. Making my way through my all-time favorite tv show, again!

  4. Casanova's Chinese Restaurant by Anthony Powell. Making my way through Anthony Powell's novel series A Dance To The Music Of Time for the third time, I think CCR is no. 5. Each read-through I become more impressed at what a great achievement this series is, I pick up new and fascinating perspectives each time.
  5. So ARod finally drops his lawsuit against MLB and the Players Union. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I think the suit against the union was the last straw for the mlb players, before that, there was starting to be some actual player sympathy for ARod, after the suit and the various charges agains the union, he was toast.
  6. Parting The Waters: America In The King Years 1954-1963 by Taylor Branch. I am amazed how little I know of Martin Luther King Jr., or the Civil Rights Movement, truly an abysmal ignorance, and I say that to my shame.
  7. Come on Dwayne, you can do better!
  8. The first song, Knowing When To Leave, has to be an absolute bear to sing, KC did a very good job on it.
  9. Yeah, that dude is at every game, and they show him all the time. Kruk & Kip, the Giants announcers always refer to him during games. Sick of the guy.
  10. While I would be the first to admit that the Mets do suck, and haven't drawn well since moving to Citi Field, allow me to give your post a more realistic and honest perspective by asking you the following question: Would you wait out a rain delay taking place in the top of the 9th inning if your (home) team were losing by 10 runs at the time? I'm the wrong person to ask, I've never left a game before the last out, no matter how far behind or ahead. In terms of a rain delay, that might be different -- in 45 years of attending games, I've never had a drop of rain touch my head (a benefit of living most of my years in SoCal, and Kingdom Seattle).
  11. Citi Field during the last inning of the Mets 11-2 loss yesterday.
  12. No, he got a full-blown put down be Davis: “I remember one time - it might have been a couple times - at the Fillmore East in 1970, I was opening for this sorry-ass cat named Steve Miller. Steve Miller didn't have his shit going for him, so I'm pissed because I got to open for this non-playing motherfucker just because he had one or two sorry-ass records out. So I would come late and he would have to go on first and then we got there we smoked the motherfucking place, everybody dug it.”
  13. The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Season 1. You know what? You got spunk!....... I hate spunk!
  14. Scrubs: Season 1. Yes, I'm going through the whole series AGAIN!
  15. Imagine, Richie Allen in the dugout smoking, and supposedly during games also. Gosh, just thinking about him is bringing back a flood of memories. Remember how he cocked his bat at the start of his swing? I though it was a beautiful and graceful swing.
  16. I don't think anything matters in the playoffs now, with Westbrook out, it's Miami's championship.
  17. One zen master was Richie Allen, who never complained to umpires, I remember reading stories about this as a kid. Steve Garvey was pretty mellow. The one player I always admired, and who carried himself in a classy way, was Johnny Bench -- in fact, I rate Bench as one of the best players I ever watched, and his fellow catchers always said that, by far, he had the best technique behind the plate. Current player: Buster Posey seems like a guy that won't ever get thrown out of a game. Nice point about Bench! He pretty much broke the mold for catchers! That's remarkable about Richie (Dick) Allen since he had to endure a lot of terrible racism from fans! Dick Allen: The dude also used an 42 oz. bat! That's a heavy man, heavy! I was a catcher throughout little league, senior league, park league, American Legion, etc., caught until I was eighteen and went off to college (not good enough to make the college team), and it was a thing of beauty to watch Bench behind the plate. Still the best I ever saw.

  19. Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion. Interesting book on something I've never paid any attention to, some of the financial figures that people spent on their "auditing" are astounding.
  20. I thought it was a joke also. Fripp has his nose in the air so much, that he hasn't seen his shoes in ages. Edit for spelling
  21. That has to be one of the stranger sentences ever written on this board...
  22. J.F. Powers: The Stories of J.F. Powers. Forgotten master of prose whose Mort D'Urban is the best and funniest novel about the priesthood/religious life ever written. The standout story here is "The Prince of Darkness", which is the nickname of the priest the story is about. Raymond Chandler: LOA Volume 1. Very good detective stories, all gathered in one place. J.G. Ballard: The Complete Stories of J.G. Ballard. Very interesting stuff.
  23. What the heck is going on with the weather in Chicago. I'm watching the Reds vs. Cubs game, no one is in the stands, and they're all dressed for a Bears game in December! But I'm chillin', it's clear skies and 82 right now where I'm at.
  24. Friends: Season 1. About once a year or so, I go on a Friends run. It's a nice harmless show, and it's an enjoyable way to pass the time. However, I have to say that David Schwimmer is virtually unwatchable in the first season. *Permission to laugh at me now*
