The Year of Our Lord 1943: Christian Humanism in an Age of Crisis by Alan Jacobs. Very interesting book, with applications to the modern world and politics.

    From the Amazon description:

By early 1943, it had become increasingly clear that the Allies would win the Second World War. Around the same time, it also became increasingly clear to many Christian intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic that the soon-to-be-victorious nations were not culturally or morally prepared for their success. A war won by technological superiority merely laid the groundwork for a post-war society governed by technocrats. These Christian intellectuals-Jacques Maritain, T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden, and Simone Weil, among others-sought both to articulate a sober and reflective critique of their own culture and to outline a plan for the moral and spiritual regeneration of their countries in the post-war world.

Rereading this, it has a lot to say about today's world...

Not sure I've ever seen one player charge an entire dugout before:

    Reds-Pirates brawl

Heaven's above, I'm so sick and tired of Yasiel Puig's act! He, of course, is not the one to charge the entire dugout, but he was the one who charged other players after things had quieted down, knowing full well that there was no way he could get to them, and even if he did get to them, the only thing he'd do is yell at them. And this guy acts like he's so tough! PUKE!

Now, there was a wit.  His letters, his (mostly-mock) duel with Jack Benny on the radio...  An under-recognized mind.

Totally agree, a quick, funny and insightful mind at work in the Golden Days of Radio, his humor transfers easily to today's climate.

I don't think Hess makes a bad wine. They try to keep their prices down, which I like. The 2016 Hess Estate Chardonnay was a phenomenal bottle of wine for $17. This particular 2014 Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon was just OK... for the money. For $50 (on sale from ~$60) I felt it should have been better. Maybe I got a bad cork? It happens. The 2012 vintage was superb.

Their single estate Cabernet from their Allomi Vineyard is very good and very nicely priced for a single estate Cab. The Hess Select line is good wine at a good price - typically under $10. I don't know if they have any wines that they only sell there. It's worth stopping by to see. :)

    Many thanks!

  5. The Office: Season 1. Haven't seen the episodes since they first aired. I'm surprised how good they are, as I remember not being too impressed when I first watched them, but knowing how everything turns out, I look and see the seeds of all the good stuff to come in this season.

An impressive victory by Simona Halep. Serena never seemed to be able to get untracked and just when it looked like she might be getting back into the match, Halep broke her. Too many unforced errors today.

Tomorrow's match could be a marathon. I think Federer might have another title in him.

Halep was amazing in her court coverage, she got everything back. Great win for her.

  7. Wasn't Harden averaging, what? like thirteen seconds per possession dribbling the ball at the end of games during the playoffs?

Well, it looks like the West will be an LA thing this year, though I'm still not sure about how the Lakers are going pull it off, might have to get a Team Pass from NBAtv this year so see what happens in LakerLand.
