  1. This is great news, I've been waiting for the single disks to come out, the Brick is too expensive... Might run down to Best Buy and see how much they're selling for.
  2. I still can't believe Sutter in, Goose out -- it just doesn't make any sense. Goose was just as good, for a longer period of time. Could you imagine the stats he would have put up if he was used just for one inning? Baseball writers
  3. Drew is one of those players whose stats make him look better then he really is. However, saying that, Boston is a place where he could disappear into the woodwork; he wouldn't be the public face of the Red Sox like he was for the Dodgers; Drew has to have the dullest personality in baseball. Of course, any talk about Drew always begins: "if he stays healthy..." Good luck on that.

  5. But he's wearing sandals in the winter!?WTF??? Are those Birkenstocks????? Mr. Tough Guy wearing Berkies!
  6. Hey, seeing the name of Ted Williams made me realize that if Rice ever makes it, that's three left fielders in a row from the Red Sox getting into the HOF. Williams, Yaz and Rice. Nice run there.
  7. I don't know if it's true or not, but I've always heard that when Fenway built the "New Press Box" that really cut the the hitter's park character of Fenway. I also agree with everyone: the Goose should've been in -- he just dominated during his prime.
  8. I would see McGwire as very iffy at this point. His whole game was the homerun, the guy couldn't run that good, not a good fielder, and his BA sucks. Take away the dingers, what do you have? Let me put it this way, would you rather have McGwire off steriods on your team, or George Scott? I'd take Boomer any day of the week given that choice.
  9. Weren't the four: Jim Palmer Dave McNally Mike Cuellar Pat Dobson I seem to also remember in the WS that year three 20 games winners pitched for the O's in one game, which never happened before or since.
  10. Wasn't he a part of the Orioles rotation that featured four 20-game winners in the same season? Doubt that will ever happen again. You got that right -- four man rotations are long gone, as well as starters going over 300 innings pitched. In Joe D's time, you could get in right after retirement, that's why a first-year entry use to be a sign of a very special player.
  11. WOW, now that is amazing since DiMaggio was voted Greatest Living Player in 1969 when baseball was celebrating the 100th anniversary of baseball
  12. Brings me back to the Red Sox seasons of '73 and '74. Mid afternoon I'd jump on a train and two stops from my office I'd be at Fenway. Bleachers were $2 and you could drink beer. Yeah, early 70's in San Diego I lived at the 'Murph, GA was $1.50. My parents were very happy to give me five bucks, drop my off at the stadium, and be rid of me for a couple of hours -- the positive side of being an abandoned child! The days when you could afford to go to games -- long gone I'm afraid. No wonder today's youth really don't get into baseball.
  13. I often wonder if it's the uniforms from the 70' & 80's that really keep players out of the Hall of Fame?
  14. I'm afraid I have to go along with Dan on this one -- when ever you read anything from people who saw Koufax pitch, people wern't just saying that he was "very good", or an "outstanding pitcher", they were all saying he was one of the best ever. Guidry, in his prime was great, but I didn't hear anyone ranking him up with the all-time greats.
  15. And make Vada Pinson a charter member! Add Willie McGee to that HOTVG
  16. Just on a side note: The best fielding first basemen I ever saw was not Hernandez, but Wes Parker. Not too many people remember Parker though....
  17. Here's a list of who can go in -- Sorry too lazy to fix it up and get rid of the underlines: A Rick Aguilera B Albert Belle Bert Blyleven C Will Clark Dave Concepcion D Andre Dawson Gary DiSarcina F Alex Fernandez G Gary Gaetti G cont. Steve Garvey Dwight Gooden Rich Gossage Ozzie Guillen H Orel Hershiser J Gregg Jefferies Tommy John Doug Jones M Don Mattingly Willie McGee M cont. Hal Morris Jack Morris Dale Murphy P Dave Parker R Jim Rice S Lee Smith Bruce Sutter T Alan Trammell W Walt Weiss John Wetteland
  18. Here is who would get my vote: Dave Concepcion Andre Dawson Rich Gossage Bruce Sutter Jack Morris Jim Rice Alan Trammell I think people forger what a wonderful player Concepcion was, his numbers don't compare with the current shortstops, but it was a different game when he played. Goose was awesome in his prime as well as Sutter. It's interesting when he played Rice was overshadowed by Fred Lynn for a lot of years, but geesh, Lynn for awhile was a fantastic player who could do everything. Dave Parker & Dale Murphy just don't do it for me. What is really cool, I saw all these guys play in person. There is nothing that compares in sports that watching a great baseball player at the top of his game.
  19. And then there is the player that had the most talent, and then threw it all away: Dwight Gooden. He had ability to burn, and now, nothing. What could have been.....
  20. I've read Powell's Dance to the Music of Time twice now, and I have mixed feelings about it. It'll be interesting to read your take on the books. I would compare the writing more to Waugh instead of Trollope or Galsworthy, Powell has that cynical touch about characters and situations that reminds me of EW.
  21. I don't know what motivated Reardon to rob the store, but the 'medication made me do it' is a load of horse hockey to mix my sports here. From what I've read, Reardon was on anti-depression drugs because he was greiving over his son who died a couple of years ago -- the son died at the age of 20. I always share your doubt on these kinds of excuses, but in this case, it just might be true. From all reports Reardon is financially secure, has no history of trouble with the law, so I would cut him some slack on this one.
  22. Could be............but it sounds to me like you might actually be talking about Yusef Lateef on 'Judyful' from the Fuller Sextet "Images" Savoy one? Coincidentally, I saw the Curtis Fuller Quintet last weekend w/Ronnie Matthews and Lou Hayes. It was Fuller's B'day and Freddy Cole stopped by to sing a couple of numbers, which was a real treat! After the show Hayes had a cd or two rattling around in his bag so I bought 'Dreamin of Cannonball' off him (he was a bit miffed that he had to pack up his own kit). So that then, was my last CD purchase. You ol' name dropper, you!
  23. The Fuzzy Warble series, vols 1-6. Merry Christmas to me!
  24. We all have players that everyone raves about, but we don't think that highly of, for me, Damon is that kind of player. Of course he had a great year last season, but that was a contract year, which always seems to bring out the best stats for a player. I see Damon going to down in value this season, and I don't think over a full season he can handle center at Yankee Stadium. Feel free to flame away now.
