  1. These are, flat-out, with-out-a-doubt, freakin' weird times we live in.
  2. Excuse the language: What kind of bullshit media does this country have, when I click on CNN, supposedly one of the main sources of news in the country, and this banner headline is on the main page? Plane carrying JonBenet Ramsey slaying suspect John Mark Karr from California lands in Boulder, Colorado. And it's a "news alert" at that!!??!! This is such a disgrace it's not even funny anymore.
  3. How can 2nd graders make papier-mâché of fifeteen planets, they won't fit in the car. For the kids sake, keep it nine!
  4. Shows how music strikes people differently. The JJ Mosaic renewed my enthusiasm for jazz after two years of not really enjoying jazz all that much.
  5. I could swear I read some where the the Montgomery set is OOP. At the very least, I think Concord might not order aonther pressing of the big box sets while they take stock of what they want to do in the future.
  6. Maybe #8? There was an interesting review of various performances of #8 in The Gramophone recently. That ends very quietly and beautifully.
  7. Well, the jazz-gods did smile upon me after all. Received word the Coltrane box is shipping today.
  8. Amazing, a friend is selling me his extra copy of this Metal Monster, and he's letting me pay by installments Bill Evans: Complete Verve Recordings.
  9. Must be something about the water up there, seems as if the Blue Jays have always had weird managers. Wasn't it Buck Johnson, a Blue Jay's manager, who said he was in Viet Nam, and never was? The Jay's have always been a strange franchise...
  10. To speak of the music for a bit: What I find interesting about this final phase is Evans' use of time. I've been thinking and listening a lot about time since reading Jim's & Larry Kart's comment regarding this aspect in the Coltrane at the Half Note thread. There is a different use of time here compared to Evans' first VV sessions, especially in his playing; the common phrase for late Evans is: hurried. I don't think it's that. What I hear is Evans' has deepened his approach toward the piano, toward time, it strikes my as more sax based than trumpet based, with the use of time being much more complex. Maybe an example of what I mean is better. In Waltz For Debby, when I listen to Detour Ahead, it sounds like a Miles Davis solo, I can close my eyes, change the instrument from piano to trumpet, and Miles appears. With this last trio, his playing is, for me at least, fuller, with very different way to approach, a different fell for time in each cut. Even the role of the bass has changed here. I'm finding the later years of Evans' very interesting. Don't know if this is making any sense, probably need more time to listen and think about these areas in Evans' playing -- so ask me again in a year and I might know something of what I'm trying to say, if even then.
  11. At this stage, I've left it all in the hands of the jazz-gods. Still haven't heard about the Trane box that I ordered 7/21, but on the good side, I did receive all the K-2s I ordered, excepting one. So, it all evens out in the scales of life's precarious whims. To ease my pain, I bought Turn Out The Stars today.
  12. Wow! See the guy toward the end with six inch platforms! As we said back in San Diego, in the 70's: Bitchin' ass!'
  13. Ever since I bought the Analogue Productions SACD of Bill Evans: Waltz For Debby, I have continued to be entranced by the music. I listen to it at least once a week now. The opening notes of My Foolish Heart immediately take to another place. Sometimes I concentrate on LaFaro, at times Motian, and always, above everything, Bill Evans. I love this SACD for some reason.
  14. Everyone's favorite trumpter, Wynton Marsalis, recorded eight cds in 1999: 1999 Standard Time, Vol. 4: Marsalis Plays Monk 1999 At the Octoroon Balls: String Quartet No. 1 1999 Fiddler's Tale 1999 Big Train 1999 Sweet Release and Ghost Story 1999 Standard Time, Vol. 6: 1999 Reeltime 1999 The Marciac Suite
  15. Don't like dogs OR cats. Never understood why people have pets.
  16. So I e-mail this guy and ask him why is this going for $75-$100 when I can get it brand new on Amazon for $32. This is the reply: "The Cd is in its original mint condition state. This quality is for collectors who never open the CD for use. It is not a remaster. Thank You for your interest! michaelg1053 at Bargainland-on-e-bay" Whatever.
  17. I still haven't heard a thing yet on the Coltrane box -- ordered 7/21.
  18. Sonny Rollins: The Bridge. I'm slowly starting to build up a Rollins' collection, which is strange, he is someone I really don't go out of my way to collect -- if you know what I mean..
  19. From the same guy selling the Coltrane cds. How is this worth $100.00???? Is something else going on here, or is he trolling for crazy people who don't know any better??
  20. Stupid question: What the heck is Homeland Security doing in this thing. I guess they have nothing else to do than get in on the high-profile, media driven case. Homeland is such a joke...
  21. I'm I the only one thinking: "This guy is just plain nuts and had nothing to do with it?" Hope I'm wrong but I'm not getting a good feeling about this one.
  22. Two cd set of John Coltrane. AND, at a bargin price of $300.00.
  23. I'm Yao Ming. I think the main reason for that was for the rebound question, I said I didn't like rebounding.
