  1. The Sonics did have a chance to take the Lakers last night, but bombed out at the end. Tarriff and Walton were playing like all-stars the last five minutes of the game for LA. Kobe looked ok, doesn't have his legs yet, had an open dunk, and got stuffed by the rim(!!).
  2. No surprise here, it was like Tommy Lasorda was the manager of the Twins -- ride you hot pitcher into the ground, then, too bad, your career is over. MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Twins standout left-hander Francisco Liriano has been scheduled for surgery on his ailing elbow that will most certainly keep him from pitching in 2007. Liriano will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday in California with Dr. Lewis Yocum performing and Twins physician Dr. John Steubs assisting, the team said Friday. The Tommy John procedure, which is a replacement of the ulnar collateral ligament, is named after the former Yankees pitcher. Recovery typically takes at least a year. Liriano had an outstanding rookie season, going 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA, but pitched only six innings over the final two months because of pain in his left elbow. With veteran Brad Radke expected to retire, it's a big blow to Minnesota's rotation for next year.
  3. Now, this is what I call news!
  4. Sonics vs. Lakers. Looking forward to the game tonight, even have Kobe on my fantasy team (not my favorite player, but points are points! andI was too late for the board's league), think the Sonics might be able to steal a w on this one.
  5. Well, before people start saying what an unfeeling ahole this guy was, what he did was a common. In churches there are a lot of hand written notes left on the altar, statues, beneath candles, etc. and the question is always how to dispose of them. You really don't want to read the letters because they do contain private material, and prayers to God. So you collect them, and most people shred them (I do) because people are writing/praying to God, not to the minister. It's a matter of respect. Now, throwing them in the ocean is not ideal, but I imagine the person thought they would sink and that would be the end of the story. Too bad it wasn't. Only a piece of crap would do this....
  6. I find it interesting to track the development of Coltrane; how someone who was "a terrible player" turned into one of the greatest musicians on the 20th centuary. Not the standard thing for a musician in any genre, is it?
  7. Last option. That's me also -- though I do love go to a B & M, and just look around and make an impulse buy.
  8. Watch the Sonic game and boy, did Brandon Roy look good! Sonic have serious troubles at center, though Wilcox scored 17 points in 23 minutes. Might be a long winter for the Sonics, and, they need to get a new arena deal with the city if they want to stay -- fat chance, people seem to be dead set against tax money going for that.
  9. Yeah, I know that feeling about 'Trane now....
  10. Two jazz cds that I think sound great, and are readily available: Red Holloway: Coast to Coast and Trio Beyond. Jack DeJohnette/Larry Goldings/John Scofield: Saudades.
  11. Crap! I was going to watch the games last night but wound up waiting for someone's plane, that was delayed, for nine hours. Is there anything worse than waiting around an airport all day?
  12. I would also add Bill Evans' Waltz With Debby SACD, I just love the sound on this cd . Sonny Rollins/Plus 4 SACD is very good also -- I think it's the only Clifford Brown on SACD. If you like rock The Flaming Lips: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is one of the most interesting sounding cds that I have. It's compressed all over the place, some of the sounds are way jacked up, but it all works to make a very unique soundscape.
  13. Darn! You'd think Rhino would come up with something special for the Christmas season....
  14. Not too bad of a set list, how was it? St. Paul, Minnesota Xcel Energy Center October 29, 2006 1. Maggie's Farm 2. She Belongs To Me 3. Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum 4. When The Deal Goes Down 5. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) 6. Simple Twist Of Fate 7. Rollin' And Tumblin' 8. Masters Of War 9. Tangled Up In Blue 10. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right 11. Highway 61 Revisited 12. Nettie Moore 13. Summer Days (encore) 14. Thunder On The Mountain 15. Like A Rolling Stone 16. All Along The Watchtower
  15. Went to Silver Platters this morning. John Coltrane: The Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings. Weather Report: Weather Report Live in Tokyo. Thelonious Monk: Brilliant Corners (SACD).
  16. That wouldn't surprise me. The polls show most people don't want him to break Hank Aaron's record, so it seems hard to believe that he'd be a great draw with a new team. SF is the only town that likes (or is it tolerates?) him. I wouldn't be surprised if some sportwriter like Rick Riley would try to organize a boycott if Bonds gets within reach. "What if Bonds broke the record and no one was there?" It practically writes itself. At this point Bonds could save a baby from a burning building and turn around and capture Osama and people would still boo him. Truly, is there any city in America that would be excited to get Bonds and his attitude? Maybe he could go to Boston -- could you imagine Manny and Bonds in the same clubhouse?
  17. When it's all said and done, I think Bonds will be a Giant in '07. I was in the Bay Area this week going to various business meetings , and the word in the papers up there was that there is a "hint" of collusion among the owners to low-ball Bonds, and not make any big-time contract -- we'll see about that.
  18. I'm always sad when the season ends. Can't stand football, basketball is ok, but baseball is the only sport I really follow. Can't wait for February to come, and it starts all over again.
  19. If they come to Seattle........ I'M THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I'LL BE FIGHTING CHEWY FOR FRONT ROW SEATS...........
  20. Dusty Springfield: Dusty in Memphis
  21. Mr. Nessa has been pimping that one for a loooooooong time.....
  22. By next week, I'll have pretty much all of Coltrane's major studio output: All his Prestige music; the Alantic box set, and most of the Impulse! (I keep buying 2-3 cds a month). So, now where do I need to go? Is it mostly bootleg stuff from here on in? Is there still major label (or small for that matter) cds that I'm missing? Where do I go now?
  23. With my birthday money, I splurged at Yourmusic.com. The dumb thing is that I had all the Dylan's, then in rash moment, I sold them all (don't ask, long story ). Bob Dylan: MTV Unplugged The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Live 1975 - The Rolling Thunder Revue The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991 The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 - Live 1966 - The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7) The Times They Are A-Changin' (Remastered) Bob Dylan (Remastered) Self Portrait New Morning The Bootleg Series Volume 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964- Concert At Philharmonic Hall John Coltrane: Newport '63 Ballads (Remastered) John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman (Remastered)
  24. Yeah, Merton was really into Dylan, which would make sense because Merton was drenched in the Freach poetry that Dylan seemed to be into at that stage in his career. BTW, I've been thinking about Merton a lot lately, and with great sadness for some reason. Like so many priests/nuns during that time, and after for that matter, he seemed to be adrift in a sea with no map to give him directions.
  25. Thanks for the good wishes everyone, it was an enjoyable day, with a lot of people singing "Happy Birthday" to me today. And Chuck: I'll never go out of my Dylan Phase
