  1. Really? (I not trying to be a smart ass here either Lon) Like I said, there were times in the Karlsruhe concert, where the way Williams' attacked the cymbals drowned out the horns, and became center stage. It could be how the drums were recorded, but it just stuck me, because this was the first time I ever felt that way about Williams' playing.
  2. Sad news indeed for a great musician. RIP
  3. Started to actually listen to the box last night, the sound is very good on what I've heard so far. I watched the Karlsruhe concert off the DVD, and it was very good, and the sound on it is great, with the picture quality high also. However, there were times when I just wanted to yell out to Tony Williams to lighten up on the drums, some of his playing was too much.
  4. I was wondering this too. Mine arrived yesterday in pristine shape. If you didn't get the new box, I have to wonder why? You ordered after the set of new shipments didn't you? Also, what do you mean by "instant replay"? Rod Don't know why I didn't get the new box, I order it late in December --those French! Instant replay -- my lame attempt at a joke. I went back and looked at the box again... But, like I said, I'm happy with what I got.
  5. Received my box today from France. Pretty good shape, even though the packaging was sparse. Two slight splits on the front flip-down corners of the box, which I repaired with some clear tape. The box is sturdier than the early ones that I've seen. Cds are in cardboard sleeves, but glue is still a problem, I had fourteen cds with residue. Still, very happy with the purchase and the price, which is on par with AmazonUK. Positives: It is very nice to have the original art work, first time I've seen some of the covers, eg. 1958. As I was checking all the cds, I became more and more astounded by Miles, it was one great album after another. This man was a true artist for the ages. Are you sure you got a newly manufactured box? Actually, looking at the instant replay, you're right, I have the old box. Still, it's all good, and it came in decent shape, and a tiny amount of glue has never caused playback problems on my player. So, I'm a happy man right now.

  7. Quote by The Genius Tony LaRussa™ This is what drives my absolutely batstuff crazy: I knew we ran a legit program is pure bs coming out of the mouth of LaRussa. Peter Gammons ran an article accusing Jose Canseco of juicing way back in the 1980s, papers constantly ran articles on the A's and steroids, of course, St. Anthony denied everything (in fact, he went off on a major Gammons rant, calling him everything in the book). Tony, I don't know about anyone else, but I never did, do not now, nor will I ever buy your blind eye excuses. Why people think this guy has any integrity is beyond me. He's on ARod's level in my book.
  8. Ah, now I see! Thanks a 1,000,000 Shawn.
  9. Dumb Question: I had MP3 credit with Amazon, so I bought the album Warne Marsh, and when I downloaded, it automatically went to iTunes. I've never used iTunes before, and it seems as if I can't burn the album to a disk. Is this true, or am I missing something?
  10. That's ridiculous. I remember seeing both play, and there is no comparison. Okay Moose, I'll grant that was a little extreme, but I saw McGwire play a lot in person in Oakland, and he wasn't all that, and you take away McGwire's PEDs, which heavily slants his stats, especially the second half of his career, and what do you get? Maybe an improved Dave Kingman (not that all improved though). But this is also the major harm that PEDs did to baseball, how is it possible to tell how much is McGwire, and how much is the PED? As to the "excitement" of the Steroid Era, to me, it was the dullest baseball I watched in my lifetime. Teams just sitting around waiting for that three run homer, *Yawn* The years of the 1980s, where you had speed and power in the game, was a great era, and the games were really fun to watch. Really, Vince Coleman stealing 118 bases in his rookie year of 1985? When will we ever see that again? *pulling up pants to armpits, and coughs* Dave Kingman: 1941 games, 442 HR, 1210 RBI, .236 BA, .478 SLG Mark McGwire: 1874 games, 583 HR, 1414 RBI, .263 BA, .588 SLG edit: for grammar
  11. Looks like we made it under the wire...
  12. There's a rumor that La Russa might PH him this year just to reset Mark's Hall Of Fame clock. If it happens (and I'm skeptical it will) who knows what another 5 years could do as far how the voters feel about this. Well, here's the thing: I think this entire "confession" has been orchestrated by The Genius Tony LaRussa™ , who is making it his mission in life to rehabilitate McGwire for the Hall of Fame. Is that all it takes now is to go ahead and cheat, make your millions, and a day-late-and-a-dollar-short, say, "Gee, I guess I was wrong, sorry, my bad!" WTH? McGwire was a crappy player, on the level of Dave Kingman before he took PEDs, so in my book, he's out now, and just on merits alone, he should never get in the HofF, confession or no confession.
  13. I'm trying to make sense of what will be on the Threadgill Mosaic, and if I'm reading the Mosaic website correctly, these are the correct album/sessions for the set: Live at Montreux 1978 Open Air Suite Air Lore X-75 vol. 1 X-75 vol. 2 (never released) You Know The Number Easily Slip Into Another World Rag, Bush and All Carry The Day Makin' A Move Where's Your Cup Is this what everyone else is thinking?
  14. Happy birthday!
  15. Amazon alert: Joe Henderson -- The Milestone Years 8 cd set for $7.99 From Newbury Comics again.
  16. The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It by Lawrence Ritter. A book of interviews of players who were in the Major Leagues in the early 1900s. I first read this book when I was eleven, and it was like reading a science fiction book, because it described a world that was so different and strange. Really? teams went to games in horse drawn carriages? No cars? People were allowed to be strange and different? Who is the world is this Rube Waddell character? John McGraw was the greatest manager ever? The America I was reading about was a strange and wonderful place that was so different then to what I was living, I was enthralled and entranced reading this book. I've returned to it many times over the years, and when I get to the last page of the book, with the great picture of Honus Wagner and John McGraw talking (click on picture for larger view), with the caption underneath: It seems like it all happened yesterday, a wave of emotion always comes over me. Truly, an amazing book of an America and of a way of baseball long gone.
  17. I have the SACD version of this, and it is very good, more detail and presence to my ears -- and I thought that for both layers of the cd. Was not too impressed with the K-2, liked the regular OJC to that version. IMHO: SACD first choice, OJC second.
  18. Then why are you here on Organissimo's web forum? After all, they are a "traditional" organ trio. Hadn't realized that being a fan of "hard bop (or any) traditionalism" was a requirement for membership here. Did you like Matthew's self-proclaimed "threadcrap"? My reply was to point out that if a traditional playing style bugs him that much, he might be better off hanging out at a website run by a band that plays in a less traditional style. Would Matthew come into a thread about Organissimo's "Groovadelphia" and bitch that it's "organ trio tradition" is now on the level of the Jamie Cullum Jazz Band? I think not. No, I would not. I happen to enjoy the Organissimo cd, of which I have them all. In fact, a lot of the jazz cds I own are "in the tradition." What I'm objecting to is that now jazz has become so solidified and attached to a certain sound, that everything else is judged but "that traditional sound." It just grates my nerves at times. We all can agree that jazz is bigger than that hardbop sound, and let it go at that. I apologize to the original poster -- sometimes emotional reactions get the better of common sense.
  19. I know this is a threadcrap, but sorry, sometimes I get FREAKING tired of the "traditional sound." Alexander's a good player and a nice guy, but his style has been done better and more creatively by many players. Honestly, sometimes I feel that the "hard bop tradition" is now on the level of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band.
  20. Three Little Bops is one of my favorites.
  21. Not even that indeed. Cashman offered him a 2-year, $14 million dollar deal a couple of weeks ago...he and Boras came back with 2 years and 20 million and Cashman said forget it, we're signing Nick Johnson. Rumor now is that Cashman wouldn't be willing to offer more than 1 year and 6 million. Some talk that the Braves might have some interest, but I have to think that JD is kicking himself for turning down Cashman's original offer; I can't really see anybody else offering him that much. Plus, Damon's game is tailor made for the new Yankee Stadium. Yeah, Boras didn't do either Damon or Beltre any favors this off season.
  22. I was thinking about getting this set, then I thought that this might be a forerunner of remastering the Roland Kirk Complete EmArcy Recordings. A person can only hope!
  23. For the past couple of weeks, I've been making my way through Robert Wyatt: Box Set, which has all the albums & EPs by Robert Wyatt, original member of Soft Machine, and it has been a wonderful experience. Not knowing too much about Wyatt, but interested anyway, I purchased the set, and it's perfect in every way: It has all the new remastered versions of everything, the price is great, since Wyatt's cds are mostly imports, but most of all, the music is great. Wyatt's voice is so unique, that it's like he is caressing a song. If you dig good music, in a prog-rock setting, do yourself a favor and get this set, you will not regret it.
  24. Horace Tapscott: The Dark Tree.
  25. I would not be surprised to see Damon back in pinstripes this year, seems to have priced himself out of the market, and he's not getting too much interest. Maybe a two year, 18 million contract (if even that). You can't steal third for ever. I was very surprised that Alamar did not get in, but next year he'll make it, and it's a shame that Lee Smith keeps getting turned down, in his prime, he was lights out. Barry Larkin deserves to be in also, as well as the most overlooked player from the 1970's Dave Conception (Dave Parker also from that era), he was a fantastic player on those Big Red Machine teams.
