  1. Anything you can recommend of him playing bebop lines?
  2. Not sure that I can think of anybody who could do that fluently. Who would you recommend?
  3. Always enjoyed this 10 inch LP. My version (I think there were several) had "Boplicity", some of the '49 Tristano sextet tracks plus a trio version of 'Yesterdays' ...
  4. Lee In Paris (1953) on Vogue - the level of Lee's playing here with a quartet approximates that of the live recording on Pacific Jazz with the Mulligan group. There's a further release on Vogue that contains all the out-takes. Incredible!
  5. 3.5 hour four-part Charlie Parker documentary by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (1989). Clips, interviews with Bird, Chan/ Harvey Cropper (artist)/ Red Rodney/ Max/ Klook/ Roy Haynes/ Monk/ Chet/ Red Mitchell/ Moody/ Milt Jackson/ Percy Heath/ Bob Dorough/ Elvin Jones/ Tristano etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlS_c2kXQOI&t=6627s Fine production based on recollections (and projections) by Chan and Harvey Cropper plus clips & interviews with musician colleagues accompanied by musical excerpts (some rare Bird to my ears) … Highly Recommended!
  6. Warne & Warne (overdubbing)
  7. Good Call!
  8. This interview (linked below) with Stan Levey by Alun Morgan mentions the first session. Morgan mentions a "mysterious acetate" ... https://jazzprofiles.blogspot.com/2018/09/stan-levey-alun-morgan-interview.html
  9. Keep swinging Barry! Happy Birthday.
  10. In the article, Dodo says his solo on "You're Drivin' Me Crazy" with Jug is a favorite - it's easy to see why - just beautiful! Also, I just realized that Bird does not solo at all on that take of Ornithology ... Thanks James
  11. Good Question. It’s a graphic novel by Dave Chisholm (Z2 Comics) https://www.udiscovermusic.com/news/charlie-parker-bird-100-continues/ In particular: “This fall, for ‘Bird 100’, Parker’s longtime label Verve Records, in conjunction with UMe, will offer an illuminating new perspective on a previously under-examined chapter of Parker’s life with a new collection titled Bird In LA, featuring unreleased songs recorded during Bird’s storied visits to Los Angeles in the mid ‘40s through the early ‘50s.”
  12. You might like to check out RLR 88624, CLIFFORD BROWN AT THE COTTON CLUB (Cleveland) 1956, which doesn't seem to get a mention here. It's a 3 CD set, reasonably well recorded (live, 1956) featuring the group with Sonny on tenor. It also has 3 bonus tracks from a radio broadcast from Town Casino Buffalo NY).
  13. Dear Lou - All the Best! Just played Dee-Dah with Clifford and Elmo- Beautiful!
  14. According to Med Flory, Warne Marsh dressed like a beekeeper!
  15. Just beautiful - many thanks!
  16. Great musician - beautiful trumpet on J.R.'s Blue Note. RIP
  17. Roy, Fats Eager - outstanding!!!
  18. Thanks Stanley. RIP.
  19. Right! My Warne Marsh "An Unsung Cat" on Storyville purchased a few years ago came as a cdr with that black/ blue frame (and no liner). What's the story there?
  20. Kosmos in Blue: John Gilmore Anthology Vol. 1 (don't know if there is a volume 2) is readily available as a download. For those wary of the space music aspect of Sun Ra, it's very approachable - fine tenor and interesting arrangements.
  21. Fascinating interview with someone who was right there during the Golden Age!
  22. Fine video!
  23. Those 50's Birdland broadcasts are a mess date wise and personnel wise - and so much of the music (particularly that featuring Bird, Bud and Fats) is sublime. Questions remain ...
  24. Miles certainly sounds excited on the Paris recordings with Tadd - maybe Juliette was waiting in the wings ;-) but his playing doesn't have the elegance, form and balance of Fats, which the "slow"/ "long" 52nd St. Theme of June 30 has (to my ears).
