  1. Hi Jazzbo: Thanks for your comments. I have been sitting on the fence on the new Coltrane set. I already have the Japan K2 of Africa/Brass (jewel case) and Ballads (gatefold). How does "Coltrane" deluxe edition of 2000? compare to the new one? The only title I lack is Live at the Village Vangaurd. I have the Duke and Coltrane in a 1996? issue. Thank you for your help. Michael

  3. Hi all: So far I have purchased Sonny Rollins on Impulse, Out of the Cool, and Blues and the abstract truth. All sound very good. The only one I already had was BATAT in the 20 bit SBM remaster. While I have always liked the sound of this remaster I felt it was a bit soft sounding. The new remaster sounds very different. The sound is more focused and the bass a bit more defined. If you like the RVG remasters of the Prestige etc. albums you should like this one. Out of the cool is a great session and sounds very good. Interesting to listen and follow the musical lines going on. Sony Rollins on Impulse is a fine set too. Maybe not one of his best, but very rewarding non the less. I was wondering if any other members have bought or should I say re/re bought any of these albums? Michael
  4. Hi all: Does this release contain all the offical titles on the album "Interplay" plus unreleased tracks or is this a combination of two different albums? Thanks. Michael
  5. Hi Unk: Music and Arts is probably legit. I believe European copyright laws are different than those in the USA. I think most of the material is out of copyright, at least in Europe. Someone correct me if I am wrong. There are other odd ball jazz labels at Berkshire. You may do a general search for say Miles Davis and see what hits you get. Some I found: 1201 Music, Prisim etc. Michael
  6. Hi all: For those of you who are interested primarily in historic jazz recordings Berkshire Record Outlet just got in many titles. Here is a quote for an e-mail: >>We have been fortunate to obtain restocks and new titles including the DEFINITIVE and JAZZ FACTORY labels from Spain which feature 24-bit digitally remastered recordings by major jazz artists and comprehensive booklets. << The site is:http://www.berkshirerecordoutlet.com Just click on Search at bottom then click Search in the search box. This gives you all the catalog with the new entries listed first. Michael
  7. I can subscribe to everything you said there. First they wouldn't touch the catalogue, then came the blowout sale of things that would go OOP, but there's so much more that wasn't in the blowout sale that has gone OOP. It's really incredible how much has disappeared in a short time. I guess that between the Zweitausendeins sale, the Dusty Groove sale of blowout items (Concord wouldn't ship directly to Europe) and Newbury Comics, I've been lucky to be able to pick up a lot of OOP stuff at a pretty good price, but there's so much more. Try finding This Is Walt Dickerson to take just one example. That one has disappeared from the face of earth. Hi: This is Walt Dickerson is still listed on Concord's website and is available. I also ordered "Sense of direction." I called Concord to ask about the availablity of this title. They checked the warehouse and they still had copies. I have been on a Dickerson collecting spree lately. Just orded "Vibes in Motion" from Dusty Groove. Good luck. Michael
  8. Hi Robert: No offense but isn't your post, along with some others, Thread Crapping! Of course the music in Traneing In is wonderful, but I was supprised by the sound quality. All Prestige RVGs I have gotten have been very good. Some complain they tend to be too hot, but I don't really hear it. I propably used the wrong term in compression. I guess it is more like a turncation of the higher frequencies, noticible on the cymbals. I hope RVG continues to put out more remasters for BN and Prestige. Just wish they would issue SACDs, but these will do. Happy listening. Michael
  9. >>I have the DCC version of this disc, and it doesn't sound muddy it all (nor does it sound bright). I've heard a few Prestige RVG editions, and some sounded too compressed indeed. Compression is something that some people with limited listening time or equipment often don't notice. It gets fatigueing in the long run.<< Hi Claude: Thanks for your reply. I may have to get the K2 remaster. I like the session, but the sound was below par for this RVG series. Of the Prestige RVGs I have bought I am pleased with them. They are improvements over the OJC mastering, but not necessarily the K2s or SACDs. The SACD of Dolphy's Out There I think sounds better--more dynamic and sense of ease--than the Prestige RVG. I also bought Dolphy's Outward Bound in this series. I compared it to a Japanese K2 remastered and it was pretty much a toss up. I also agree with your assessment of Audiophile Auditions music reviews in general. Most online cd reviews on audiophile equipment review sites tend to be this way. Michael
  10. Bought this Coltrane title recently. This is the first edition of Traneing In I have bought, so cannot compare it to other masterings. I was a bit shocked how dull (compressed?) this cd sounded. I listened to this right after I listened to Sonny Rollins Plus 3 RVG and I thought I was having hearing problem. Sounded like a wool blanket was pulled in front of my speakers. My wife even agreed it sounded dull. Do all the cd masterings of Traneing In sound this way? Is the original tape in bad condition? I found an on line review of this RVG on "AUDIOPHILE AUDITION" which raved about the sound. Rather strange. Thank you for your comments. Michael

    Prestige RVGs

So far I have bought the Etta Jones, Dolphys, Lateef, Workin, Quiet Kenny. Haven't had time to listen to Workin yet, but the others sound very good to me. There maybe a drop out on Outward Bound, but I need to listen to it again to make sure. A month or so ago I compared the SACD and RVG of Out There. Over all I preferred the SACD, because its sound was richer with more presence. However I prefer the mix on the RVG. Same goes for Outward Bound RVG mix. I compared it to a K2 super coding red book version. Sound wise there wasn't a huge difference between them, but again the RVG mixes I liked better. Generally I prefer the RVG mixes--narrower stereo-- to the wide L/R panning of the OJC. Does anyone else find some of the RVG cover art too dark? I find the covers on Outward Bound and the Lateef to be way too dark. Particularly on OB where the crossed sax and clarinet in the middle are hard to see. In photographic terms I would say these covers are under exposed. I noticed this on several titles in this series. I can only conclude it was an aesthetic decision by the RVG series art director. I am looking forward to future issues in this series. Sure wish these were SACDs though. One can dream.! Michael

    Prestige RVGs

Wait...are you saying the new RVG is a remix? That's a whole different ball game than just remastering Hi bluesbro: Well thats what I heard on the RVG as compared to the SACD. I guess that means a "remix." Not certain what the proper technical term is for this. Perhaps it is panned far to the the center. RVG did this on the Blue Note RVG series too. The first BN RVGs sounded almost mono, later on in the series he moderated this practice and didn't pann so narrowly. I guess it shouldn't be too big a shock to folks who have collected RVGs in the past. Michael

    Prestige RVGs

Hi. Out of curiosity I bought the RVG of "Out there" to compare to the SACD version. The first thing I noticed was that the RVG was transferred at a higher volume level than the SACD. It took awhile to adjust the levels. I only compared one track " Sketch Of Melba." The RVG is quite good. Details come through clearly and instrumental color is good. I like the mix better on the RVG than the SACD. On this track the flute is center and the cello (bass) is not hard right, but panned a little bit more toward the center. The SACD is panned hard left and hard right. Sound wise the SACD, to my ears, has the advantage. The instrumental timber is fuller and richer. You can hear more resonance from the cello on the SACD, the RVG is drier sounding. The flute sounds confined on the RVG, but on the SACD it sounds freer less constrained. I will probably pick up some in the RVG series I don't already have a good version of. Michael P.S. I only compared the SACD layer not the RB layer to the RVG. th are I doubt the SACD of Eric Dolphy's 'Out there' can be topped. That is one of the best sounding CDs in my collection.
  14. Hi. Has anyone compared the RVG of Distination Out to the Conn. edition? I posted this question several months back, but the question wasn't directly answered. I would appreciate some opinions on the masterings of these editions. Thank you in advance. Michael
  15. Hi. Has anyone compaired the new RVG of Destination Out with the Conn. version? Thank you. Michael
