That's what I was thinking. At this rate, there will soon be nothing left in the vaults to re/release. THEN WHAT? Oh yeah, then SACD B)

I am not familiar at all with the Charlie Rouse Conn, "Bossa Nova Bacchanal." Can anyone enlighten me on this one? I'm not a big bossa nova fan, but I dig Rouse's work on Monk albums. Is it worth straining the budget for this one?

Oh man, those covers get me excited ! Can't wait for the new Conns BTW, who has the best deal on Conn pre-orders????

In honor and celebration of Coltrane's birthday, I am playing "Blue Train," "Chasin the Trane," and "A Love Supreme." I was driving to work this morning, and the local public radio station was playing some Coltrane. Sometimes it hits you-- just how great he was. To hear "My Favorite Things" during a rainy, sloggy commute, just reminds you how beautiful things CAN be-- and ARE, when you look past the surface. That's Coltrane.

Congratulations and best wishes to Mr and Mrs Moran. However, I must note that the musical menu at the wedding hardly commands enthusiasm. I'm OK with the African drums (especially if it gives the bride a bit of a sashay in her walk ) but a classical quintet? Madonna?? Michael Jackson??? I know Jason is eclectic, but, c'mon, where's the JAZZ?

Decided to take a virtual stroll over to AAJ, site says, "Down for Maintenance." Anyone know more about that? Just temporary site work, or more serious problems at AAJ? (Seems to have coincided with GregM's reentry over there ).

Absolutely!

There is no point in arguing against collecting. One might almost consider it a natural hunter-gatherer instinct, and it goes on in all fields. The closest parallel to collecting LPs is collecting books. One could read James Joyce in a $5.00 paperback, or one could spend thousands on a first-edition-- or do both. My sense is that what bothers people in the case of Blue Notes is that buying these OOP LPs is like buying-up the heritage. One gets to "own" BN in a way that one does not when buying a CD. And this is tied in to larger class issues in this country, where a minority (mostly well-heeled) baby-boomers practice seemingly unlimited consumerism. They have the $50,000 cars, the $500,000 houses, the $10,000 vacations, their kids get the pick of schools. If they turn their attention to BNs, they buy, buy, buy. It's conspicuous consumption on a scale not seen since the Gilded Age. It's in-your-face consumerism. And sometimes, people get pissed.

Can anyone speak to the sound quality of these reissues? How good is the remastering?

I notice that Lovano performs on the CD. I wonder if that is where he came up with the idea for his Caruso album? I don't understand how using Puccini material created a problem. Isn't it in the public domain by now?

Any new Borders discount coupons out there?

In the new (Sept) issue of JT, there is an "Overdue Ovation" article about, and interview with, Grachan Moncur III. One interesting aspect of the article is it indicates that Moncur had a dispute with Blue Note over the rights to his musical compositions, which led to a break with the label. Moncur insisted on keeping control of the rights. That's an aspect I've not seen discussed much, particularly in connection with BN. Apparently, Moncur is benefiting now from royalties that he would not otherwise have reaped.

Thanks for the coupon. There was another post a week or 2 ago for a 20% discount at Borders- that coupon COULD be combined with other discounts. I went to my local Borders and got 20% off items already marked down 20%- woowee . Still more stuff out there, however.

I think the restriction is 3 or more of any one title. This is to keep some dealer or wholesaler from exhausting the stock. I ordered 7 different titles with no problem. Some good stuff, and a super bargain indeed. Thanks for the tip!

Please... we need your help.

I have a Rega P3. New, with top of the line cartridge, will run you about $900. An excellent performer. I play jazz and classical on it and I love the sound. If budget is really a problem, try the P2, for about $300 less.

Perhaps I shouldn't admit this, but recently I developed a taste for the early Ramsey Lewis trio (before they became terminally commercial). Anyway, their earlier recordings sort of remind me of The Three Sounds. Would anyone care to comment on that comparison? Or on the early Ramsey Lewis trio? I rarely hear much about them on the various forums. Perhaps, like the Three Sounds, their commercial success has undermined their later appreciation.

I admire people who really get into their music

Here's the usual way to check this out: Borrow a pair of speakers from someone (make sure to return them! ). Hook them up to the amp. If the same problem occurs, then it's the amp. If you switch back to the old speakers, and the problem happens again, then it's the speakers. My guess is it's the amp/receiver.

Quote: "Since our original version of Blue Note Radio became extinct over one year ago, we have seen a flood of emails, consumer inquiries and requests to bring Blue Note Radio back online." Not through the BNBB however

Well, as a matter of fact, that was what I was doing (research that is). I went to Audio Asylum Hi-Rez board, looking for the latest "buzz" on SACDs and SACD players. Found the post about Sony, thought it was interesting and worth sharing. It IS a little strange how Sony is handling their SACD business. If SACD is going to stay around, Sony needs to do more. I also found the usual contingent talking about the SACD version of DSOTM. Oh yeah, there was another group extolling the SACD of "Sound of Music" (for goodness sake ). I still think there is a dearth of viable choices in SACD players. Some low-end, some real high-end. Checking out the Phillips This research is tough :rsmile:
-
Saw this on another Board. The post refers to the SONY store in Chicago. " I wasnt knocking the employee about not knowing about SACDs! I was knocking Sony!! Come on! Its their flagship store and there are NO SACD's for sale? I dont think they even had any SACD players. How is the public supposed to learn abut SACD's if the people who make the things doesnt bring it out to the forefront?? Thats what these flagship stores are all about, publicity. Have a nice demo station set up and let people hear it. SACD's are so good that even joe public will be able to tell pretty easily."

Thanks for the links. I didn't know about Crutchfield. I had checked Audio Advisor, Red Trumpet, Best Buy.com, Symphony Sound, and a number of other retailers, no luck. I found that rather surprising. I'm not keen on buying from Audiogon. Also, I should note that I am not interested in multi-channel, and am not a big home theater fan. I just want to play music in 2-channel stereo. That narrows the field. Greg, as the leading advocate of SACD, why not direct me to something that IS a really good deal? BTW, what's your evaluation of the Sony DVP-NS755V? And what's your recommendation?
-
The reappearance of Greg prompted me to check out the SACD players on the market. What I found was that very few on-line retailers are selling SACD units- hell, I couldn't find any. What's up with that? Really, I checked all the usual audio dealers- nada. I'm willing to consider an SACD/CD player, but firts I got to find some for sale. Can anyone (hello Greg) provide some links, so I can see what's out there (in the 300-1000 range preferably) for SACDs. It really shouldn't be this hard, should it?

Would anyone care to comment on the chances of Mosaic either going to SACD for future issues, or perhaps more intrigueingly, reissuing some of their O/P sets in SACD? Don't know the licensing and legal issues involved therein, but that could be a very profitable move for Mosaic. After all, some of their earlier reissues, in early CD sound, could benefit from new sound technology. Another big question: How would BN and Mosaic fans feel about such a development if it took place? On the one hand, it would give a lot of us access to material that is right now out of reach (i.e, EBAY Craziness); on the other hand, it would surely lessen the value of sets already issued-- unless something was done to distinguish between earlier and later reissues.
