  1. Sullivan Fortner solo piano performance. Very impressive! I saw him supporting Cecile McLoren Salvant last year, and he was very good, but solo is a different animal.
  2. Thanks for the heads-up! I'll try to get to the Make-Out on Tuesday. Is that a solo show or with his quartet?
  3. You should enjoy it. The pod is called "Spotlight On". Episode is from Aug 1. "Ches Smith & Shara Lunon: dismantling musical conventions" Here's the Apple Podcast link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/spotlight-on/id1497338311?i=1000664007805
  4. HaHa ... In this case you have to see it. It's a show like no other. Ches can be pretty intense sometimes. I heard a podcast with him recently. Learned a lot about his background that I didn't know.
  5. I saw Cobra a couple of times last year. Totally wild. And he always gets the broadly eclectic group to make the chaos work.
  6. That track is on Tidal, too. Looking forward to this!
  7. Lots of SFJAZZ this week Tomorrow: Marquis Hill w/drummer Makaya McCraven, vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassist Junius Paul, and keyboardist Mike King Friday: Don Was & His Pan-Detroit Ensemble w/Dave McMurray tenor saxophone, John Douglas trumpet, Vincent Chandler trombone, Wayne Gerard guitar, Luis Resto keyboards, Jeff Canady drums, Mahindi percussion, Steffanie Christi'an vocals Sunday: Bill Charlap Trio w/ Dee Dee Bridgewater and Nicholas Payton
  8. Johnny's first band after the Smiths, w/Zack Starkey on drums
  9. Fair enough
  10. Yes, he blows a lot of notes, but I don't think he can out-play Ribot in full scronk mode 😎
  11. Nice! We were both there! I must have seen you - it wasn't very crowded.
  12. Decent album that didn't seem to get much recognition
  13. Saw Sasha Berliner tonight. Definitely an up and coming vibes player to keep an eye on. She has an excellent young band with her, too.
  14. I've been to the last 5 Big Ears. Always have a great time and get to see amazing music. For example, last year's series of Henry Threadgill shows were spectacular. Some with him performing, and some without. I also try to go outside my comfort zone and see artists I haven't heard before. Many more artists have been added since that list, BTW
  15. RIP Saw him with the short-lived Souther, Hillman, Furay Band in 1974
  16. Two SFJAZZ shows this weekend Tonight: Vibist Sasha Berliner in the small Joe Henderson Lab space Nicole McCabe alto sax Paul Cornish piano/keyboards Max Gerl bass Myles Martin drums Tomorrow: Marc Ribot 70th Birthday Celebration in the Miner Auditorium (great lineup!) Marc Ribot guitar Mary Halvorson guitar James Brandon Lewis tenor saxophone Hilliard Greene bass Chad Taylor drums
  17. I have that. Good "Nuggets" spin-off collection. The Los Angeles collection is well done, too.
  18. Saw him on a panel at SXSW 2013 discussing the early years of that group of musicians Born in Chicago panel: Harvey Mandel, Nick Gravenites, Bill Bentley (moderator), Corky Siegel, Barry Goldberg
  19. There was a nice interview with him on the Caropop Podcast recently here: Graham Maby (Joe Jackson) Caropop Graham Maby is one of rock’s most revered bassists, known especially for his work with Joe Jackson. Maby and Jackson were in another band together in England before Jackson proposed forming his own band with Maby’s bass front and center. That was the approach of Jackson’s first three albums—starting with 1979’s Look Sharp!—and the ever-gracious Maby reflects on how his indelible parts came to be. He also recalls the breakup of the Joe Jackson Band, his continued work with Jackson on albums such as Night and Day and Body and Soul, and what prompted him to join previous Caropop guest Marshall Crenshaw's band. How did Crenshaw’s approach to bass parts differ from Jackson’s? How did Maby wind up back in the Jackson fold? And when will they record and perform together next? https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/caropop/id1588331867?i=1000660428630 +++ Can I add: Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Melvin Gibbs?
  20. Sylvian has such a unique voice, too. I don't love everything he does, but you always know it's him.
