  1. I was thinking of doing a Buddy Bolden discography. But seriously, folks .... You know, Charles isn't all that prolific. We could probably put together a pretty good discography right here. Rooster, you could start with what you already have and let the rest of us fill in the blanks.
  2. It's a quaint thought, but I seriously doubt that the dozens of regular posters on the BNBB amounted to much revenue in the scheme of things. If anytning it would effect Mosaic, being a small company. But as has already been pointed out, we've found other outlets to discuss this music anyway.
  3. I've had trouble getting into Interpol, myself. I downloaded it and have listened a couple of times, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. From my list: Carmell Jones - Mosaic Select. Rock solid and never quits. Thad Jones - Mosaic. Picked it up before it went OOP on a whim. Just kept getting better. Dave Holland Big Band - "What Goes Around". Saw them live, too. VERY exciting.
  4. So, that IS Donahue on "Moveable Feast"! There is no mention of the line-up - only photos on the inside sleeve. I always thought it was a pretty solid live album. Really brutal version of "John The Gun", if I remember correctly. The group on this album appears to be: Swarbrick, Denny, Donahue, Pegg, Lucas and Mattacks(another unsung great). Thanks for the heads-up on "Expletive Delighted". I downloaded it from EMusic, but have no liner notes to go with it. Haven't listened to it much yet, either.
  5. As P.D. mentioned, Berkshire Record Outlet has Black Lions for $2.99. I just checked over there and they currently have 26 titles - INCLUDING Tolliver's "Grand Max".
  6. The 2 Charles Tollivers are both worth picking up - "Grand Max" (live) and "The Ringer". Both are really solid quartet dates with the incendiary CT on trumpet. Grand Max is ALWAYS on ebay - so if nothing else, you could pick it up there.
  7. "Nothing More" is also a great tune with some very tasty Jerry Donahue. He seems to be a guitarist that got lost in the shuffle. Certainly impressive on this album, for sure.
  8. I heard that it was awful. Worse than the first time around, which wasn't so great, either.
  9. I've got "Grass Roots", "Structurally Sound", and "Jacknife" (in both LP form and in the Mosaic). I voted for Ervin because I never have warmed to it very much even though it's got a killer lineup. I want to hear what everyone else thinks. Hill would be my second choice. I like it for it's accessibility, even though it's not particularly representative of Andrew's work. Third would be Jackie Mac, but I don't know how the new release might differ from what I already have.
  10. A couple comments on the LA Times obit. 1) About his stint with Max Roach: It says that he didn't want to tour and was replaced by Harold Land in the group. I thought that was Land's story and that HE was replaced by Sonny Rollins. 2) The film "One From The Heart" was 1982, not 1992.
  11. Bev - Believe it or not, I saw the same two tours that you did. Denny "solo" tour in LA, 2/18/1972 and with Fairport in Berkeley, 11/10/1974. I remember enjoying both, of course. I'll add my support for Fotheringay being a great album. "The Way I Feel" is something special in my opinion. I could listen to it every day. I enjoy "Northstar", too, but it is a much more subdued album.
  12. Hey! Good tip, bertrand. I never would have known.

    Bill Heid

Finally getting into this guy. He really has a nice sound. Definitely a Larry Young influence - but not a copy, for sure. I recently listened to "Bop Rascal" and "da Girl" both strong outings. Are "Wet Streets" and "Dark Secrets" as good?
  14. Just went through disk 3 and found "The Sidewinder" inspiring. It's a really cooking version of this tune and a much different feel than the original, for sure. Just after Mabern's solo at the 9 minute mark they go into this vamp that just takes the whole thing to another level for about a minute.
  15. EMusic just added John Martyn & Danny Thompson - "Germany 1986". Can't be ALL bad. I'll have to check that one out.
  16. OK. OK. I'll explain ... "Bells" - The second tune on the first album. Stunning!
  17. ... and the NL West is already over.

    Super Session

It doesn't say anything about being an SACD disk. The liners talk about how Bloomfield "split for home" after his day in the studio (chronic drug problems) and Kooper had to scramble to find another musician.
  19. My suggestion: With the consolidation of the radio industry (basically Clear Channel monopolizing the airwaves), stay away from commercial music stations altogether. Try to find an independant, non-commercial station down on the "left" side of the dial.
  20. GOT to be the Blakey set for me. There's SO much good music there.

    Yo La Tengo

    Problem solved ...
  22. These are great suggestions. Most of them are on EMusic and I never knew what to start with.
