    Garth Hudson RIP

My memory of Garth is seeing Marianne Faithfull at the Bottom Line in 1987 with an all-star band of: Dr. John, Garth Hudson, Marvin Stamm, Fernando Saunders, Bill Frisell and J.T. Lewis
  2. Muse CDs seem to be reasonably priced. Vinyl can be much more (Median Discogs $): Clifford Jordan "Night of the Mark VII" $100, Woody Shaw "Moontrane" $96, Joe Chambers "Double Exposure" (w/Larry Young) $50. Quite a few others in my collection, less than $25.
  3. Sounds similar to the NY show. As far as energy, I didn't specifically Tolliver's playing - there's no way he could still play like years past. More that the whole show was a little up and down. There were some fine moments for sure, but then it veered off at other times. This was the second set of the night, so maybe that had something to do with it. Disappointed that McBee and Cables didn't show up in the second set - but again, I'm sure age had something to do with that.
  4. Ravi's show turned out to be a more exciting set than the S-E show. I was surprised - not that Ravi wouldn't be good, but that Tolliver's show was a little sloppy and never really brought the energy I was expecting. Here's Ravi w/Jeff "Tain" Watts, David Virelles and Dezron Douglas
  5. I have that box, too. Great stuff. Plus most of the Tolliver albums. Here's another one of Tolliver at the NYC Winter JazzFest w/Camille Thurman, Aaron Johnson, Darrell Green, Christian McBride
  6. Sounds probable. I can't think of any other reason that stuff is getting moldy in a vault somewhere.
  7. How about the ENTIRE Muse Catalog! I don't understand how all of that great music can remain OOP for so long. Especially with the rise of remastered classic albums on vinyl.
  8. Can't wait for Monday's Strata-East show! Also going to Ravi's Love Supreme interpretation on Sunday with loads of guests. Should be wild.
  9. Pentangle "2.0", but still a very good album
  10. A little late, but I finally got around to watching this doc. Much more interesting than I expected. And some great 'talking heads' (not the band) appearances by fairly obscure artists. I learned a lot about the development of the Free Jazz scene, too. I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign they ran several years ago and had forgotten that they promised a screen credit if you contributed at a certain level ($50 maybe?). I was actually there! 😎
  11. Real interested in that set. I have some of those albums on individual CD, but there's obviously a lot more. Unique artist, for sure.
  12. I'm going to the Strata-East show in NY in a couple weeks. Really looking forward to that. Helluva lineup!
  13. Outstanding set. I got the Slugs' albums way back in the 70's and have always been favorites. McBee, Tolliver and many others will both be at the NYC Winter JazzFest tribute to Strata-East in a few weeks. Really looking forward to that show!
  14. A couple of excellent Resonance releases
  15. Yes. I miss them already. I have a small collection of notable shows that I have stubs for. No use in printing out eTickets, though. Not the same.
  16. Zakir Hussain, Peerless Indian Tabla Player, Dies at 73
  17. Last night was a good show for sure. A very tight band - they know what they're doing.
