  1. I enjoyed them at Big Ears. A little different lineup for Nels.
  2. OK - Thanks! I really wanted to like this, but I listened to it a few times and was disappointed. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
  3. Recommended? I haven't been a big fan of his solo albums.
  4. Didn't see him, but I saw the news today. Kind of shocking. Made me think of Susan Alcorn, who was scheduled to play this year but died a couple of months ago.
  5. I discovered yet another version of Vijay when the trio Field Work reassembled for a show at Big Ears - last album, 2008. I believe they recorded a new album that will be out later this year. An amazingly INTENSE live performance from Vijay Iyer / Steve Lehman / Tyshawn Sorey
  6. Saw these two interviewed by Ashley Kahn at Big Ears, and it was a very sober sociopolitical discussion about life and the state of the world. I bought the CD at the venue.
  7. A great time, for sure! So much music, so little time. Top picks in no particular order: Axiom 5, Nels Cline Singers, Jamaaladeen's 101 Audio Odyssey, Ambrose Akinmusire, Sorey/Britt/Melz/Ndegeocello, Sorey Trio, Scheinman’s All Species Parade, Fieldwork, Consentrik Quartet Most intense experience: Fieldwork with Iyer/Lehman/Sorey was something I'll never forget. Those 3 were on fire! All the conversations were excellent, too. And there were several that I wasn't able to attend, like the ones with legendary producer Joe Boyd THURSDAY Critics Picks - Ann Powers, Nate Chinen, Ashley Kahn, And Marcus J. 8. I saw an expanded edition of the AOC too, at Big Ears in 2019. Obviously very different from the original lineup, but an interesting performance. Roscoe and Moye participated in the presentation. Now playing:
  9. It was fairly crowded, but the galleries were big enough to accommodate everyone
  10. "Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers" at the National Gallery, London in January. An impressive exhibition of his work.
  11. A 2006 album I never heard of before. It's an instrumental 'soundtrack', and the music holds up
  12. Tomeka is ALWAYS entertaining! She has really re-invented the cello. Been lucky to see her several times. Pic from last year's Big Ears: Tomeka Reid Quartet w/Jason Roebke (bass), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Tomas Fujiwara (drums)
  13. Just saw an outstanding show at SFJAZZ tonight: Craig Taborn w/Tomeka Reid and Ches Smith Opening was the Avishai Cohen Quartet who were very good, too
  14. Will Bernard - guitar Chris Lightcap - bass Ches Smith - drums with Tim Berne - alto saxophone John Medeski - piano and Hammond B3 All songs written by Will Bernard 2022
  15. The Lobero would be a GREAT place to see him. A shame it wasn't sold out, but he probably plays there somewhat often.
  16. Didn't know any of that. Are BOC really "heavy metal"? Not sure how I would classify them, actually.
  17. A lot of good songs on that album - also Nightmare Epiphany, The Return of St Cecilia and Florida Man Wild that you live so close to that house!
  18. Kind of a typical drum setup for Tyshawn. You don't have to have a Neil Peart setup to be great.
  19. This show will go on as planned, but now as a Tribute The luminous spirit and singular artistry of the late Susan Alcorn will be honored in this special performance featuring members of her band – Mary Halvorson, Ryan Sawyer, yuniya edi kwon, and Lester St. Louis – and close musical collaborators at Big Ears.
  20. This album was recorded and released during Covid. Much better than could be expected. Especially since they all recorded their parts remotely.
