Great article. I wasn't aware that he was still barely scraping out a living even after his CD release from a couple of years ago. Best of Luck. LWayne -
Recently purchased "Turning Point" from Downtown Music Gallery. They weren't certain whether it was a "real" IAI catalogue CD versus a CDR version. Although the label and the manufacturing notes look legit, is there any way to tell for sure? DMG has always been very reputable. Thanks, LWayne

Indeed Sam Rivers was a special guy and an unpretentious one to boot. Several years ago, in 2003, I had the privilege of catching him play live along with Jason Moran and the Bandwagon at Spivey Hall at Clayton College outside of Atlanta. Together they performed songs from the album “Black Stars”. It was a great concert. After the show, Sam was kind enough to sign an autograph for me. We had a brief conversation and he revealed that he had driven from Orlando to Atlanta that day just for the show, and that he was intending to drive back again later that night after greeting the audience. Imagine that; at age 80, he drove both ways to Atlanta just to perform one show with Jason Moran. A couple of years later, in November 2005, I was on a business trip in Orlando, Florida. After dinner, I advised one of my business guests that I was going to pay a pilgrimage to Will’s Pub in Orlando to hear Sam Rivers rehearse his Rivbea Orchestra. My friend and I were both impressed by the band and that a legend would be practicing with his band and bantering with the audience in such humble surroundings. Truly one of a kind! I will miss his kindness, his humility, and his grace. LWayne

guess that story I remember was about another concert at the 1986 (or 1987) Mt. Fuji Blue Note festival... some recorings have shown up over on dime years ago. Must have been a comment there? Or a comment in the Moncur Select's booklet, maybe? The story is in the notes to the Hill Select of unissued BN sessions. I recall that you told this story as well at the Pitt Jazz Fest last November in a rememberance about Andrew Hill. LWayne

My final lists for "Best of" 2011" are as follows: New Releases 1 Aaron Goldberg/ Guillermo Klein Bienestan Sunnyside Records 2 Craig Taborn Avenging Angel ECM Records 3 Jason Adasiewicz Sunrooms Spacer Delmark Records 4 Joe Lovano Us Five Bird Songs Blue Note 5 Vijay Iyer Trio Tirtha ACT Music 6 Miguel Zenon Alma Aldentro: The Puerto Rican Songbook Marsalis Music 7 Bill Frisell 858 Quartet Sign of Life Savoy Jazz 8 Dave Douglas Three Visions Greenleaf Music 9 Rudresh Mahanthappa Samdhi ACT Music 10 Enrico Rava Quintet Tribe ECM Records Footnotes: my favorite new release for 2011 was Joseph Daley Earth Tone Ensemble "Seven Deadly Sins" on Jaro. However, since it was released in Europe in 2010, it was on my "best of" list for last year. Reissues 1 Miles Davis Quintet Bootleg 1: Live in Europe 1967 Columbia Records 2 Gabor Szabo Sorcery/ More Sorcery Impulse 3 Charles Tolliver Big Band Mosaic Select 37 Mosaic Records 4 Ahmad Jamal Poinciana Revisited/ Freeflight Impulse 5 Rany Weston Blue Moses CTI 6 Miles Davis Bitches Brew Live Columbia Footnotes: Debated whether the Miles Davis Bootleg was a "reissue" since it had not been officially released. Finally, I became comfortable with the distinction that the music was previously in the public domain. Overall, this set is, by far, the best CD of the year. Live Events 1 Charles Lloyd New Quartet Albrght Knox Art Gallery-Buffalo, NY Thursday, January 20, 2011 2 Pat Metheny and Larry Grenadier Manchester Craftsmens Guild-Pittsburgh, PA Saturday, October 01, 2011 3 Randy Weston African Rhythms Quartet Walters Art Museum-Baltimore, MD. Wednesday, April 06, 2011 4 Henry Threadgill and Zooid Christ Church Theater-Philadelphia, PA Sunday, June 05, 2011 5 Stanley Cowell Trio An Die Musik-Baltimore, MD. Thursday, March 24, 2011 Footnotes: Meeting Charles Lloyd, Randy Weston, and Stanley Cowell were my personal highlights of the year. Great year for jazz! Regards, LWayne

Horrible news indeed. I have posted many wildly enthusiastic reviews of his various group performances on this forum over the years. He was my absolute favorite. Class guy and the consummate musician. Anything that he played he imbued with a new life and made it his own. I will miss his musings, performances, recordings, and inspiration. LWayne

What live music are you going to see tonight?
LWayne replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Last night at Manchester Crafstmens' Guild in Pittsburgh, Pat Metheny and Larry Grenadier. ...maybe the best show I have ever seen at that venue.......WOW! LWayne -
Great music but lousy packaging! I had the same problem as everyone else when I opened the shrink wrap and the booklet fell out. Luckily I caught it before it hit the wet sidewalk. (note to self: wait to you get home before playing with toys). Minor issues aside, the music is absolutely sublime. Does it qualify for reissue of the year since it was technically never "officially" released? LWayne

Maybe they were searching for the "Bootleg Series", Volume 2?... LWayne
