  4. A cold morning. Right before bed had an emergency--Fiona the dachshund was bleeding profusely from the mouth--I think she lost a tooth. Blood got all over the sofa cover, my pants and shirt, and towels we threw down all over the rug. Took an hour or so to get it to stop, gave her a dog aspirin. She went to sleep and is back to normal t his morning--exceeding my expectation. She's really a trooper. Decided to listen to a chill pill, the 85th Anniversary Blue Note Japan UHQCD version of Grant Green's "Idle Moments." It sounds great. It is hard to not make this session sound great.
  5. Wiliins and Ross--I'm in!
  6. Another afternoon of pressure washing. Maybe one more and all the siding and the deck will be sparkling clean. I’m too old for this. Or not quite. Finally getting to sit down in front of the stereo and chose this Blu-Spec CD2 from 2023 Miles Davis “Sorcerer” (Mark Wilder remix edition)
  7. Bill Evans “Momentum” Limetree 2 cd set, disc 1 Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, and Marty Morell in Groningen, Netherlands, in 1972 Japan is reissuing this in December as two separate cds, and I was wondering if I should order the Japanese release. . . don’t think I need to, this sounds just fine. Nice playing–I’ve always liked this trio. 299×300 11.5 KB
  8. “Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VIII Starting off strong with some great Teddy wilson and including some great John Kirby and Betty Roche tracks.

  10. Wayne Shorter “ETC Et Cetera” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD 820×820 77.9 KB
  11. Agreed. Don Bagley “The Soft Touch” Dot/Blue Moon cd Bass – Don Bagley Drums – Shelly Manne Flute, Alto Flute, Piccolo Flute – Paul Horn French Horn – Tommy Loy Piano – Jimmy Rowles I originally bought this years ago because Jimmy Rowles was in the piano chair. A good reason! But I’ve learned to really like the album, and it led me to buy the other two Bagley leader dates.
  12. Andrew Hill “A Beautiful Day, Revisited” Palmetto cd, 2024 An expanded and remixed reissue of this challenging large ensemble Hill recording.
  13. Cool morning, quiet and calm. Lots of the leaves are gone, already. Sigh. Starting the day off with a new arrival from dustygroove.com Tete Montoliu “Recordano A Line” Discophon/Muzak Japan cd A strong trio date by a pianist I appreciate more and more over the years. 210×205 11.8 KB
  14. No, it's a label that issues Japanese releases of select jazz titles, as far as I can tell a legitimate one--but I can't say that with certainty. I don't know what equipment they use, but I would like to see more reissues and issues sounding this good. They also are well-packaged.

    Don Bagley

A few days ago I pulled his three leader sessions out to listen to and listened to the middle one (with Woods and Costa). I'll get to the other two (with Jimmy Rowles on piano) soon. I like these. It seems after the advent of rock he moved to music for film and TV and must have done okay. He was an interesting musician, that's for sure.
  16. Missed it by that much (October that is). “The October Suite” Steve Kuhn, Gary McFarland, Verve cd 400×354 24.1 KB
  17. An early trio recording by the man who would become Peter Nero shortly thereafter. “Bernie Nerow Trio” Mode/Muzak Records Japan lp facsimile cd. Like all these Muzak reissues the remastered sound is wonderful. 300×299 9.81 KB

  20. Okay, I don't usually enjoy celeste, but Meade Lux Lewis is making it sing and swing. "Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions" Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VII
  21. Don Bagby “Jazz on the Rocks” Regent/Savoy on Blue Moon cd 295×300 13.9 KB Don Bagley (b), Phil Woods (as), Eddie Costa (p, vib), Sal Salvador (g), Charles Persip (d)
  22. Another really warm fall morning. . . should be beautiful before the rain scheduled to dampen the Halloween outings of neighborhood kiddos. Revisiting this Sun Ra recording from 1970. Although the music is not that special for Ra recordings, and features the sort of performance art philosophy that honestly turns me off and away from a lot of jazz that is at the very fringes of the tradition, the recording is truly fascinating, showing the depth and vitality of the sound in the theater–a good system really transports you into an audience seat. Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra “Paradiso Amsterdam 1970” Bobby Hutcherson “Happenings” Blue Note 85th Anniversary UHQCD A very favorite recording in excellent new mastering.
  23. Marty Grosz et al “Remembering Louis” Jump Records cd
  24. “Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 11 cd set, disc VI 500×500 97.3 KB The amazing Fats Waller!
  25. Dave Young Quintet “Mainly Mingus” Justin Time cd Starting off a warm Indian Summer morning with some MIngus interpretations. Nice! As an owner of a number of bass instruments I like bassist led sessions.
