  1. Thelonious Monk “Misterioso” Riverside/Analogue Productions LP 200×200 9.77 KB From this box set (reissue)
  2. Joe Henderson “Inner Urge” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD Joe with McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw and Elvin Jones
  3. Buster Williams Quintet “Somewhere Along the Way” TCB cd Bassist Buster Williams with Gary Bartz on alto and tenor saxophone, Carlos McKinney on piano, Steffon Harris on vibes, and Lenny White on drums
  4. Maybe they offered several plans to Concord and a more expansive one was not accepted. I would say that this one makes sense cohesively to me. I probably have all the likely material to be included in the piano-centric set, but it will be great to have them all in session order and annotated in Mosaic fashion. Looks likely to be a good release for next year.
  5. Bill Charlap Trio “Written in the Stars” Blue Note cd 500×459 30.3 KB 288×243 7.94 KB
  6. Gerald Cannon “Combinations” Woodneck cd Edit to add: this is a really good cd. Cannon reminds me of Mingus in his tone and playing, and his arranging and directing draws one in. A kindler, gentler Mingus though, if such a Mingus were possible. . . . GREALD L. CANNON, bass GARY BARTZ, alto sax SHERMAN IRBY, alto sax STEVE SLAGLE alto sax JEREMY PELT, trumpet DUANE EUBANKS trumpet RICK GERMANSON, piano KENNY BARRON piano RUSSELL MALONE WILLIE JONES III drums WILL CALHOUN, drums
  7. It took me a while but I realize what makes her singing unique for me is a subtle element of Nigerian phrasing. Listening to his "Combinations" so looked up a photo, found this nice one. William Cannon, bassist
  8. As beautiful and graceful as her voice and singing.
  9. Just finishing up this one. The precision of the unison playing between Raney and the horns is astonishing and so well captured (in mono). "Jimmy Raney in Three Attitudes, "Fresh Sound cd [IMG]634×640 63.7 KB Reissues these: [IMG]500×500 49.5 KB Followed by Grant Green “Blues for Lou” Blue Note cd Grant Green, Big John Patton, Ben Dixon
  10. A beautiful album from “Orquestra Popular de Câmara” on Adventure Music. The sound is wonderful and the arrangements and performances not your typical Brazilian but something new. As soon as you hear the tabla you know you’re in for something atypical. I’ll have to seek out their second album. This one has st on the shelves a long time and I’m glad I am revisiting it today.
  11. I had a part of a dream last night that I was looking for a Blossom Dearie record. Well I have a few, more on cd, and decided to listen to this one. 498×500 21 KB A nice one with full orchestra from 1964, originally a Capitol LP, on cd from the US on her own Daffodill Records (manufacutred by Capitol Special Products) and later a Capitol cd, and from TOCJ Japan a few times.
  12. Finally listening to the final disc of this box. What a great set. One could wish that the last two discs sounded a bit better, but if wishes were horses there would be dung everywhere.
  13. I think the Mel Powell sessions will make the second set. . . I would hope so. . . fabulous music.
  14. I pre-ordered without hesitation--I have much of this material, it is all well-recorded and excellent performances. Looking forward to the piano-centric Vanguard set in the future.

  16. Gary Bartz “The Shadow Do” Prestige Japan cd 250×250 18.7 KB Starting off a relatively warm morning with the humor and light funk of this Bartz album. 17. Sonny Stitt “Constellation” Camden 2 cd set disc 2
  18. Lonnie Smith “Keep on Lovin’” Groove Merchant/Solid Records Japan cd
  19. This one again. It's really good!
  20. John Hicks Trio “Impressions of Mary Lou” HighNote cd John Hicks - piano Dwayne Dolphin - bass Cecil Brooks III - drums 498×500 31.9 KB I love how he sneaks that bass line from “Isn’t it About that Time” into the end of the first track.
  21. Re-listeing to disc 5 of this new box set. In part because it is one of the parts of this box set I did not have before, and in part because I just don’t want to get to the end of this set so am saving disc 6 for . . . probably tomorrow.
  22. Another cool and damp morning. We’re finally getting typical November weather, though I think we’ll have a few warmer and sunnier days starting tomorrow. I love the quiet and peaceful vibe of this time of morning outside. Started off with a re-spin of some of the Garland at the Prelude disc 1 then saw Ron Carter talking about Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar” on Facebook and decided to spin this “CITI-RVG” cd version from King Records Japan. What a great session with Freddie Hubbard and George Benson and Ron Carter.
  23. The Japanese have reissued these dates on cd more than once. I don't think that is a reason the US Blue Note hasn't; in general the expansive reissue objective we saw at the time of "Doubletime" just can't or won't exist today.
  24. 600×600 114 KB “The Red Garland Trio at the Prelude” Complete, 2 cd, Prestige Records, disc 1 Red Garland - piano Jimmy Rowser - bass Charles “Specs” Wright - drums
