  1. The Mercury material! A huge chunk of it is reissued in a two cd set called "Sophisticated Swing." Also, the Savoy material is fantastic, and most is reissued in a two cd set called "The Adderley Brothers: Summer of 1955"---I guess basically all of Adderley is worth hearing. I still haven't heard all the final Capitols, but want to.
  2. Yeah Ellington. The blue PAINTER. Shheessh, not necessarily at the piano, but what that guy did with the BLUES!
  3. Heaven help me if I have to take an ASCAP test! I'm just into the overweight category. Oh joy oh joy. That damned Ben and that damned Jerry! Desk jockeying the last seven years hasn't helped. . . but I'll be back in Elvin Jones' like shape in no time. . .once I retire!
  4. Hmmmm. Somehow my vote didn't register. Ah well!
  5. I do lust after some women in my heart for brief moments. Both sweets and salts for me. . . Like you Dan I love peaunt butter/chocolate ice cream, and a lot of other ice creams. . . I have to have a little bit of ice cream in the evenings lately it seems. And I didn't think I liked salty stuff, but I've been having either tortilla chips or pretzels every work day as part of my lunch, and if you let me have my druthers I'd go out to eat at one of the many fantastic Mexican food places here and eat chips and salsa far more and more often than I should. Late forties. . . food is meaningful as a stress reliever for me I guess, as smoking and drinking hardly ever happen as stress relievers any longer (no smoking at all, a tiny bit of social drinking on occasion). Battling the bulge, neither winning nor losing, just fighting!
  6. Monk and Hancock are very good answers that I agree with. Another that comes to mind, and is a favorite, is Art Hodes.
  7. I am so glad that my wife and I are very compatible sleeping wise. I love sleeping with my wife. I now have a hard time falling asleep without her. Habit built up I guess. Alexander, in your shoes I would be very reluctant to have my nose broken and reset! My one problem is that I seem to "need" less and less sleep, I can't seem to sleep more than seven hours tops a night. . . and I still seem to "think" I "want" more but it just doesn't happen! I get up and listen to my stereo. . . win win I guess.
  8. Well here is another favorite, one of the most recent movies that I have seen that I was really moved by and that I feel is excellent in every way. . . Monsoon Wedding.
  9. Hey, wake up Big Al!
  10. Yeah, I bought the cd just to get that session! (We are all likely to have the rest of the material.)

    Wayne Shorter

I wouldn't be surprised if he "really means" Moto Grosso. This may be how he thinks of it. I think of it more as "Fat Mess."
  12. On cd on the Chronogical Classics Bud Powell release.
  13. I've been enjoying the RVG too. It sounds great to me on my main system. Yes, it's a bit brighter than the McMaster version, but it has so much life and detail in comparison. It's the best I've heard this session.
  14. Thanks for weighing in Wolff. My limited exposure to BN vinyl mirrors your experience. Hot, bold, nearing the saturation/distortion level, not the prettiest on cheap playback systems. And the RVG cds sound very different on different playback systems I have: very nice on my best system, okay on my livingroom system, barely adequate on my computers. Overall, because they sound very nice to me on my main system, and better than McMasters and actually more lifelike than TOCJs, I'm a fan of the series. The domestic ones in general sound different than the Japanese and the most recent ones can sound better than earlier ones. I really like the four of the latest batch that I have, the Dexter and the Coltrane being the best I have ever heard the material.

    Art Tatum

The playing is of an order that trancends recording quality. And I have a lot of cds where this is the case, I can really stomach bad sound for stellar performance. This isn't one though where the sound stinks. I happen to think that Newman recordings like this are quite listenable. HighNote's reissues of the Onyx Newman stuff sound the best I have ever heard the material.
  16. I am DEFINITELY not a huge Dylan music fan, I like his work with The Band and Blood on the Tracks and New Morning and that's about it, but I liked Tarantula, and I'm not much of a renter of videos or buyer of videos or dvds; I prefer to see films in the theater rather than watch them at home. I may try to see this this weekend. Thanks for the info. I sort of EXPECT it to fall apart at the end!
  17. UP OVER AND OUT! That rules.
  18. I've read reviews of this film that call it a trainwreck. It still seems interesting to me as a concept and I've been trying to talk my wife into going to see it. . . I'm getting a little bit of success but someone called it "incoherent" and my wife likes films that cohere. . . . Anyone have a report?
  19. This will make one of my friends very happy, he's been looking for this cd for some time with no success.
  20. Ah, the typoes continue. . .the tradition continues!
  21. There's a cassette available though! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=20823
