  1. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy by Cannonball Adderley, on Capitol. This one SMOKES so many others and BURNS like a welding torch.
  2. AAJ mentioned above is the bulletin board on the All About Jazz site: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/index.php?s= May find an answer there (I'm not revealing whether I would lay any money down on the odds!)
  3. Fantastic two cd set. Great price too!
  4. I'm exactly with you, I like the vocals. . . the bagpipes I wish weren't there. I'm just not a fan of bagpipes PERIOD!
  5. Safe assumption sir!
  6. Vibes, have you seen this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...?showtopic=4062 Extensive discussion of the series. I'm a big fan of this series. The sound is very good, or rather the remastering is very good, and the sound is varied by sources, most sounding very good indeed. A wonderful horn of jazz plenty!
  7. There are a few Freddie Hubbard lps I'd like to hear. . . without Freddie.
  8. It's worth the bite, unless you're blessed by being in a great vinyl hunting area. . . even so I'm not sure all the alternates were available on vinyl (maybe; I've had this on cdr of two lps, the Twardzik and one called "Piano Galore" . . . I'm not sure these had all the Twardzik items on this cd.)
  9. I got mine from Red Trumpet, and they seem to have it still: http://www.redtrumpet.com/software/item.ph...&sid=1151033254
  10. That reverb etc. was Teo's contribution to the original album of the "It Club" release. UGH. France just used his tapes, not the original undoctored tapes that Columbia used for it's cd release.
  11. I should have qualified my statement to say that I haven't heard the Philology cds, only a lot of the material on other (earlier released) recordings.
  12. The sound quality on a lot of this stuff is pretty bad. . . .
  13. I know two vinylnuts that love this one. . . but I know what you'll say. http://www.decware.com/phono/zp1.htm Haven't heard it myself, but I think his products are fantastic, have lived with several for years. Amazing bang for buck!
  14. I for one don't have the box, just a number of single releases (including three or four Japanese) and having all the masters in one place makes sense to me.
  15. The Dick Cathcart would be cool indeed. . . a great trumpeter! Hey, is that really Bix under that snow? B)
  16. 01011001011011110010000001101101011000010110110101100001 Is this egghead fun or Pocket Protector Poesy?
  17. Here's a review of the Slim Gaillard Proper box set I did for AAJ; there are reviews there of the Tatum and other boxes as well. . . . http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/review.php?id=10872 I've had this one, and I have the Wills, Milton Brown, Hillbilly Boogie, Wynonie Harris and Swing Tanzen Verboten boxes. I haven't listened to them much. . . .They're cool though. I wasn't crazy about Proper at first, because with artists such as Pres and Hawk they weren't putting entire sessions into the boxes and I was just worried that material would become orphaned and forgotten, or that people would pick up the Pres box and think they didn't need to get anything else. . . . I've been won over by the boxes they have released that are more complete, such as the Harris and Brown and a few others. . . .
  18. I agree Joe; more recordings from that Silver group would be really welcome!
  19. That's probably what you should do. That's probably what I should do. I've never been able to "get" this group. I've enjoyed the recordings of some of the members individually, but collectively. . . I've hardly been able to make it through a single lp side. . . But I haven't heard these seminal recordings. . . .
  20. Thanks for letting me know. I'll probably pick this up after Christmas. . . tin box and all!
  21. I love this album. It is one of those Blue Notes that are different, step away from the label's formulas, and for that I dig it. Washington is a player that I dig very much as well, and he really shines here on this soulful release. A good job by all really, if you ask me; I have had this for some years thanks to Greg mailing me a copy bought from a Tower in California. . . and I've found two other Washington dates since that I like, but not as well as this. Hard to describe really, it's a soulful jazz date that veers at time to the freejazz world. . . . I'm hoping that it is reissued in America one fine day. I've heard tales of Michael and Bob Belden laughing away while listening to Washington's unreleased session. . . I'd still love to hear it one day. . . maybe one day after Michael is no longer custodian of the vaults. . . . I'm convinced that I will at least enjoy the hearing once. . . and possible enjoy replaying it a lot. I'm very interested to hear what those cats put down that day.
  22. There was the five cd series "Duke Ellington 1947 to 1952"; that is a prized posession of mine. There were others that eventually did come out as American cds. And others such as "Jazz Summit" by Charlie Parker, "Always Know" by Monk, "Unknown Session" from Duke that have not . . . A nice series. I wish I'd been able to snap up "Cosmic Scene," "A Drum is a Woman," "All American," and "Midnight in Paris". . . .
  23. Great movie. . . I'm not getting the DVD because part of the appeal of this thing was the huge screen experience, know what I mean? But I like this movie, a lot, and NOT because I've had a clown fish at home for about three years!
  24. I've liked all the Atlantic material that I have heard. IF you like his electric and funky stuff, then nearly all of these will please. Definitely consider the one that reissues the Columbia lps though, Cool Sax, Warm Heart / Cool Sax From Hollywood To Broadway.
