Of course, that latter portion was left out of Stopping Time. Pardon the furthering of this digression, but you might be interested to read my Altschul interview at AAJ. He did at least give Altschul credit for being the only cat to "pass the test". He must have found some good smoke! I saw your AAJ interview with Barry in NYC print edition - very nice, and long overdue. Saw him a month or so ago, and he's looking very well.

My Bley discography is out on loan to a friend who's doing an interview with him, but I think you're right about the unissued GTA session. The Actuel recording is "Ramblin" I believe, and has been issued a couple of times (and perhaps originally) on Red from Italy. It was recorded in Rome in 1966 if memory serves. I did a gig once with Barry, and asked him about the "test" that Paul used to give musicians where he would drop them off someplace in a strange town, and they had to find a girl, a car, a phone, and some smoke by the end of the day, and Barry replied unhappily "that MF stranded me in Rome!" Apparently Louis Moholo found him sleeping on the Spanish Steps. At least that's the way I remember it.........and who knows how it really went down!

Paul has mentioned that project - it was originally intended to be ballads, with each comprising the length of one side of an LP. He told me that ultimately, it was unsuccessful, as they couldn't stretch the tunes out that long and maintain interest. I think that the tapes were eventually released on Ballads (ECM) and perhaps Virtuosi (IAI), so they're out there - just not on ESP. As you probably know, he wasn't shy about documenting his stuff - the story goes that when he met Manfred Eicher in the early 70's, he showed him a wall of master tapes, and some of those were some of ECMs first releases (including Paul Bley and Gary Peacock).

Thanks Clifford - this sounds promising................
-
I might not have either - like Clifford, I would've though there were different versions in different keys (except that the G pedal for the bassist wouldn't be as friendly to the player in Ab). Bley told me himself - that's how I know for sure. As far as I know, each issue has been a half-step high (and correspondingly, a little too fast). I'd love to hear it at the correct speed.
-
That's rich - I've been on her band for 15 years and never heard that one.
-
I'm interested to find out if the pitch was ever corrected on "Closer" - every version I've ever heard was mastered a half-step too high - is Ida Lupino in G or Ab on the remastered version? It should be in G.

I've known Lewis since we played in the big band and small groups at Arizona State University 30 years ago........I was a lonely country boy from North Carolina, just beginning to play jazz, and he was (and is) a great friend - he had me over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner with his family - that's a day I'll never forget........he's a great human being, and he always played his ass off.

Hi Randy - I'm not sure when it'll be up at emusic - that's something the label deals with. The best I can tell you right now is to keep checking back with emusic and see if it's there. In the meantime, I'll see what I can find out, and post any info here. Thanks very much for your interest! my best, FK

Hi folks, and many thanks for the positive comments - I really appreciate it. Anyone who wishes to purchase this album should be aware that CDs are available exclusively from the Palmetto website. Hi-res mp3s (along with a couple of bonus tracks) are also available there. It's also available at itunes. For the present time at least, it's not available in record stores, or through other "normal" distribution channels. If that changes, I'll post an update here.......I just want to make sure that those who want to get it can do so without going to a lot of trouble. Thanks again, and hope you'll enjoy the music.......my best, FK

I heard Peacock with Bley and Motian in New York last August (at Birdland). Over 2 nights I heard 4 sets, and Peacock sounded amazing, as always. No tunes were called, no tempos stomped off - just in-the-moment improvisations, sometimes based on tunes, but just as often not. Maybe his intonation isn't always perfect, but was he ever on! At one point in an improvisation during their first set, Bley played a line, and Peacock played it right back at him, immediately - Paul was so surprised that he just looked up at Peacock in mid-improvisation and yelled "Fuck You!" - he meant it in a humorous way of course. It was a hilarious moment, though I may have been the only person to hear it - I was sitting at a table just by Paul's left hand. After the set, I asked Paul if I had heard him correctly, and he said yes, and then remarked in his inimitable way that the bass player's not supposed to play better than the pianist. Where Gary's shortcomings are concerned, it's like I tell my students - it's the irritation caused by a grain of sand that makes the pearl. One thing for sure, he's the most listening bassist I think I've ever heard.

New Konitz book
fkimbrough replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Wasn't this about the Konitz book? It's good - really good. Lee is his opinionated and honest self throughout, and I found it a fascinating read. Playing note to note and endless melody is what it's all about for me, and I was inspired. -
New Yorkers - There's a free concert this evening at the World Financial Center in lower Manhattan to celebrate Monk's birthday. I'll be playing there, and so will Randy Weston, Cedar Walton. Fred Hersch, Luis Perdomo, and many other classical and jazz pianists - obviously the program won't consist entirely of Monk's music, but there will be a lot I'm sure. We'll all be playing a wonderful Fazioli concert grand provided by Klavierhaus. See the thread in the Live Show and Festivals section for schedule and directions. It starts at 5 pm and goes until around 9:15..........

What are Your Favoritie Keith Jarrett Impulse Albums?
fkimbrough replied to AndrewHill's topic in Recommendations
My favorite is the one that's not on the list - "Shades". When Dewey begins his solo on the title cut, I get a chill, even after 30 years! On the LP version, "Shades" makes an amazing segue into "Southern Smiles". On the Impulse boxed set, "Mysteries", the segue's not there - it was an edit, but a damn good one. "Backhand" is another good one, also not on the list. I would suggest saving the pennies and getting both Impulse boxed sets. I think that was one of the greatest bands of its time. Everyone sounded great, both live and in the studio. -

andrew hill tribute on wkcr
fkimbrough replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
You guys ought to show some respect for a guy (Schaap) who is thoroughly dedicated, who probably doesn't make a dime from his efforts at WKCR, and who has probably forgotten more about this music that you've ever known. -
Bley, Spanier, and drummer/percussionist Geordie McDonald made a CD for the Justin Time label. It's called "Know Time", and was recorded in '93. It was released in '95. It says in the liner notes that their duo recordings from the '50's were lost.
