woofy, it looks like you like big band music!

Well Paul, I'd like to respond on a couple of counts. When I talk about rock 'n' roll of the '60s, I'm talking about the white artists except for maybe Jimi Hendrix and I guess Sly Stone who both came later like in '67. The blacks were r&b. So I don't think your defense of r&b is relevant to my argument that the British bands wiped the Kennedy administration record co. pawns off the map. Interesting that you mention the r&b artists that you do, because as I recall a number of them quit having white radio station hits after Jan.1, 1964: for example Gary US Bonds, Arthur Alexander, Hank Ballard and The Contours. I also disagree with your view that the British Invasion was a ploy of the record cos. to sell music to white kids. As I recall the kids (the market) were in control; the record companies had (for the time being) lost control. The cos. were scrambling to sign any British act they could. As I said above, the British bands had honed their skills for years in nightclubs. It was the American acts who were created by the record companies, and who promptly lost favor with the kids. I also note that the British bands each had many hits. The record co. pawns were often one-hit wonders. edit for grammar

My man Jeff Garcia (former Calgary Stampeder) continues to look good.

Chalupa/Deeley, does this make up for 1964?

Don, the term "hooker" goes back to the US Civil War. A Union general named Hooker provided them to his men, and they were known as "Hooker's girls".

RIP. Makes me feel nostalgic.

I'm pretty sure I have the Mirage LP. I'll have to pull it out and give it a close listen.

I heard a story about Zoot Sims last night on the radio. A patron at a club said to him, "How can you play so great when you're always loaded?" Zoot replied, "That's because I practice loaded!"

The Ventures, without a doubt! They were the leading instrumental band for a decade, from Walk Don't Run to Hawaii 5-0. For a while in the mid-60s they issued four albums per year. The Dave Clark Five were the #2 British Invasion band next to the Beatles in 1964. Their sound became tired after three years and they were unable to change with the times; but in my view the HOF should include almost all of the 1964 British Invasion bands. Not only did those bands have many hits, but they completely wiped off the map the artists of the Kennedy administration. They also brought into the fold many fans born between 1946 and 1954. People forget (or never realized) that there were plenty of teenagers who didn't like rock and roll until the British Invasion hit. The Kennedy administration acts were pawns of the record companies. The British Invasion bands were musicians who had honed their skills in night clubs over time before they recorded.

Geelong 163....Port 44 The score after the first quarter was 37-14, so Port barely scored more in the whole game than what Geelong did in the one period. Geelong scored 46 in the third quarter alone. Well, they can't all be good. And after the two extraordinary games of the past two years, I guess the league was due for a bummer. Here is the link to a Melbourne newpaper called The Age, which prides itself on its coverage of Aussie rules football: http://www.realfooty.com.au/

radio industry gets a bad signal
GARussell replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
None of the local radio stations here appeal to me. Many of these guys have poor signals. When I am on the road at night, I used to listen to 50,000 watt clear channel stations from Philly and elsewhere. Now I listen to Sirius exclusively. Yet these guys enjoy 40% profit margins. I'm guessing it's because of their constant advertisements. I've got no sympathy for them. When they go out of business, I won't notice. -
Here's an article about a proposal to build a new ballpark in Ottawa with a CFL team as its major tenant, looking at the 2009 season. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home

Am I the only one who thinks LEEWAY is boring?
GARussell replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Al, I very often find that my opinion of a CD significantly improves when I skip the first track or two. Perhaps you will hear Leeway with different ears if you try it! -
Thanks Kenny. It was the VFL when I watched every week. I bought a Hawthorn Hawks jersey back in the day. I also have a Fitzroy Lions t-shirt that I bought when they moved. I'll wear that as I listen to the game. What do you mean by the statement I have placed in bold? I don't understand what you mean by "fall away".

Reviewing the standings above, I see that the Riders have lost three straight without Matt Dominguez. ***** The Stamps announced today that Henry Burris will not need surgery on his dislocated shoulder. He will be out two weeks, and then be on a week to week basis, meaning they don't want to end his season by putting him on the nine-week list. His backup Akili Smith hasn't shown much thus far, but really hasn't been given the chance to show much either. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home ***** The Argos signed Troy Davis today. He has been out of work since the Eskimos cut him in the off season. He may be rusty; but on the other hand the layoff may make him the healthiest running back in the league. He's old, but I don't think he is washed up. I think the Esks let him go for salary cap reasons and because they cleaned house over the winter. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Tor...4524760-cp.html

I have read more than once the belief among economists (college professors who study such things) that a community without a major league sports team benefits from having one. The team puts the city on the map, so to speak. But they say that there is no evidence that the city benefits from having more than one. Seattle has the baseball Mariners and the football Seahawks. So the presence of the basketball SuperSonics means nothing to them. Oklahoma City, however, has no pro sports team. So the presence of the SuperSonics there will mean a great deal to the local economy. So the OKC city fathers are willing to spend taxpayers' money to entice a team to move there. That's the theory, anyway. However, Seattle is a much larger market than OKC, so relocation of a team from Seattle to OKC would be expected to reduce the appeal of the league to the television networks when the time comes to bid for the next exclusive contract to broadcast the games. And since television is where most of the money comes from, the league may step in to prevent the relocation.

MG, I'm not sure that the company had much of an "original promise". As I recall, in the brochure I received in 1986 (which was the first time I had heard of them), the explanation of the company was that two guys (Charlie Lourie and Michael Cuscuna) started the company to issue what they considered to be important music regardless of whether it had any commercial appeal or not. As I recall, they cited the Monk Blue Note and the Mulligan/Baker as sets they considered to have commercial appeal, and the Tina Brooks and the Herbie Nichols as sets they considered to be without commercial appeal. So from the start they said that they were going to issue music they liked and thought was important. They made it clear that nobody's opinion mattered but theirs, although later they asked for suggestions. I later called and placed an order with Charlie Lourie, and during our conversation I suggested the Four Freshmen and other vocals. Lourie dismissed the idea, and felt that there weren't any jazz vocals good enough! (Hard to believe, but that's how I remember it!) The "limited edition" nature of the sets was stressed, in the sense that "you should order now or forever hold your peace". It was never suggested that their products would become popular and would be good investments for resale.

You guys are struck by the uniforms, and don't notice the guy wearing a diamond earring!

That was my first thought, even before I clicked on the thread!

The city filed suit today to prevent the move. I was taught in school that you either kept your contracts or paid damages. I don't see how the city can keep them from playing in OKC; they just will have to be satified with payment of any expected revenue from the contract. Anyone want to disagree? http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...Basketball/home Seattle files lawsuit against Sonics' attempt to move Associated Press September 24, 2007 at 3:28 PM EDT SEATTLE — Seattle city officials filed a lawsuit Monday to keep the SuperSonics from leaving town. The lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court was a counter move to a Sonics' attempt to be released from their lease on KeyArena. According to the complaint, "The Sonics promised to 'play all home games ... exclusively"' at the arena at the Seattle Center through Sept. 30, 2010. "The city, with the help of some fine lawyers, is standing up to a pro sports team," city attorney Tom Carr said at a news conference. "Too often, pro sports teams have run over local governments." Sonics chairman Clay Bennett said Friday the club has requested an arbitration panel to rule that the NBA franchise does not have to play the final two seasons of its lease at KeyArena, arguing that the contract allows a negotiated buyout. Such a ruling would allow the Sonics to relocate after this coming season unless the club secures a new arena in the Seattle area by Oct. 31. Carr disputed claims by Bennett that the Sonics are losing money because of the arena lease, described by NBA commissioner David Stern as the worst for any team in the league. "The issues with the Sonics' profitability at KeyArena have less to do with KeyArena than with the Sonics' ability to defend the high pick and roll," Carr said. Former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton, a lawyer who was instrumental in preventing the departure of the Seattle Seahawks under former owner Ken Behring, said at the news conference that while many disputes that could arise under the lease are subject to arbitration, the duration of the lease is clearly excluded. The ultimate goal of the latest legal maneuver is to keep the Sonics in town permanently, whether under Bennett or a new, local owner, Gorton said The lease makes it clear that the Sonics agreed to play all their home games in KeyArena for the duration of the agreement, and Bennett seems to have planned from the outset to move the club to Oklahoma City, Gorton said. "They made the kind of demands that, from my perspective, were almost designed not to be met," Gorton said.

So you missed the Brown-Raiders game on TV?

Now that the Indians and the Angels have clinched, perhaps the teams that are playing the Red Sox and the Yankees will not try their hardest.

The Argos' victory yestserday really puts life back into their chances to make the playoffs. Of course, three of their five wins have been against the Ticats, but now the Argo fans have some reason to hope.
