  1. Thanks for the explanation, Dan. The only player I can think of who had a reputation for being better than his stats was Eddie Stanky. Chuck probably remembers him. They used to say that he was known for his "intangibles".
  2. Dan Ralph has a good and lengthy column tonight of odds and ends: He says that John Hufnagel is rumored to sign a six year deal to coach the Stampeders. He also suggests that Jim Popp is likely to relinquish the Als' coaching job. This was the first year that the Als finished under .500 since they returned in '96. Average attendance this year was 29,167, the highest since 1983. I had no idea it was so much. The Argos averaged 30,391. That's much more than I would have thought. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home
  3. Aggie, I have a number of box set CDs of Miles that I haven't heard yet, and I want to get to a few of them before I follow up on what I open up now.
  4. I'm pretty sure that I read in the On the Corner box thread that it includes tracks from Get Up With It. I was planning to buy the On the Corner box when BMG/Your Music got it, but it now appears that that is not going to happen. All of this talk has me in the mood to hear some of it, but my current finances prevent me from considering buying the box. It so happens that I have a couple of Miles albums that I haven't opened yet - Get Up With It and Panthalassa. So I'm in the mood to hear one of them. I'm pretty sure that I have read that Panthalassa includes tracks from Get Up With It remixed. Is that right? So for those of you who have heard them both, which do you recommend I hear first? I'll wait a year to open the other. Is the Panthalassa remix an improvement? Would I appreciate Panthalassa more if I first became familiar with Get Up With It? Thanks for your input!
  5. At least DancerChick was promoting Ella Fitzgerald!
  6. What is that? Is a good number high or low?
  7. Thanks for your belated wishes everyone! I found a John Coltrane CD that some of you might be interested in if you are in the same situation I was in. Last night I went to Amazon (using the Organissimo link, of course!) and ordered the Bob Newhart CD and also a book I have been interested in for some time called How to Win the Culture War by Peter Kreeft. At that point I was $1.90 short of the $25 threshold for free shipping. I found a Coltrane CD called Jazz Classics, an Atlantic compilation, for $4.95. So buying the Coltrane CD saved me $5.98 in shipping. In the alternative, those of you who are rock fans might be interested in Ten Years After's Cricklewood Green or The Best of Quicksilver Messenger Service.
  8. Happy Birthday Conn! I listened to Gino Cappaletti do the Pats/Colts game on Sirius Sunday. He was my favorite player when I was a kid.
  9. The Globe & Mail is reporting today that Pinball Clemons will step down as coach of the Argos at the end of the season, and be replaced by defensive coordinator Rich Stubler. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home
  10. Happy Birthday Paul!
  11. I'd prefer to use the money spent on the set to acquire music I would enjoy more and listen to more frequently. Mike, I have a number of albums that I did not like at first, but that I have come to enjoy over time. This box set is cheap because it has gone out of print. You may never have another chance to obtain this music. I suggest that you hold off for a long while on selling the box until you have given yourself a better chance to come to appreciate the music.
  12. The times of Sunday's games have been changed. Sunday is Remembrance Day in Canada. Remembrance Day is Memorial Day done right. The Winnipeg game was set to kick off at noon local time, and the veterans' groups complained that the early kickoff would interfere with Remembrance Day services. So the Winnipeg game will start at 2:00 pm eastern, and the Saskatchewan game is set for 5:00 pm eastern. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home ***** There was an error in tabulating the all-star team votes listed above. Calgary's Sandro DeAngelis, not Luca Congi, is the Western placekicker. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/New...4630639-cp.html
  13. Thanks again, guys! TTK, since it was your idea I put on one of your favorites, Brasil '66's Equinox. I had a pleasant surprise last night. I decided to go out for pizza instead of making cheeseburgers. About 2000 when I lived in Atlanta a friend recommended to me a pizza chain called Cici's. She said that the pizzas were five dollars and really good. Well basically I didn't believe her. Too good to be true. We have had a Cici's in this area for a couple of years, and I decided that I would give myself the birthday present of satisfying my curiosity about Cici's. I expected it to be lousy, but what do you want for five dollars? Here's the deal. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet. They have I think eight pizzas waiting for you, plus salad, pasta with sauce, soup and dessert. The price is $4.75 plus $1.75 for tea or soft drinks. There is no waitress, so there is no tipping. If they don't have a pizza you want, they will make it for you. The pizzas were all surprisingly good - New York style thin and soft. Most of the pizzas were a little light on the condiments. By no means the best pizza I have ever had, but much better than I expected. The desserts were gooey brownies, cinnamon buns and apple pie on a pizza crust. So I had all I could eat for less than seven dollars. I'll be sure to go back sometime. It has been my experience for the past twenty-some years that the pizza in the south is usually pretty bad, and this was much better than what I can usually find here. By the way, I'm finding that I'm digging the Joe Henderson more and more with each listen. Sidewinder, I'm glad you gave us the heads up on that deal. edit for typo
  14. Happy Birthday Porcy!
  15. Many thanks, my friends! Noj, I started the second account when a few of us were unable to log in about two months ago. I am having serious issues with my landlord which I think will require me to move. For the past six weeks I have been unable to use my desktop computer which is set for the GA Russell account because the landlord's electric fence causes static on my phone line (this area does not have DSL or cable TV hookup). So I am forced to use my ten-year old laptop computer which sometimes makes it onto the internet. The laptop is set up for the GARussell account. I have the day off today, and I haven't gotten much done. To celebrate the day, I have opened up two CDs. My Joe Henderson Milestone box arrived the other day, and I waited until today to dig in. I played first Power to the People to hear what everyone has been raving about, and then listened to the remainder of that disc. I then heard for the first time the third (and last) disc of the Chet Baker PJ Live Mosaic box. So I have spent the day enjoying good music! I have just now spent my birthday money on a Ron Paul for President cap and bumper sticker, and plan to spend the remainder on the 2 CD set of Bob Newhart monologues. The other item of note I received (some of you may remember we talked about him before) is a book by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. I'm looking forward very much to starting into that one. TTK, great idea! I'll play some bossa nova before the day is through. I also plan to open one more CD, Cal Tjader's first Skye album called Solar Heat. I love those Skye albums which you can get cheap at dccblowout.com. Today is also the birthday of Roy Rogers, Art Garfunkle, Peter Noone (Herman of Herman's Hermits) and Reginald Veal. When I was a boy my older sister informed me that in England the day is celebrated as Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic who planned to blow up Parliament. For years I thought it was odd that the English would celebrate that, but one day it occurred to me that what they are celebrating is the fact that he was caught before he could do it! Maybe Sidewinder or another of you Brits can fill us in on that. Now I'll go and make some juicy cheeseburgers! Edit for typo. I make a lot of typos on this laptop computer!
  16. Satiurday's games: Toronto Argonauts 41....Saskatchewan Roughriders 13 http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gam...4628527-cp.html The Argos clinch first place in the East. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 21....Edmonton Eskimos 19 http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gam...4629180-cp.html British Columbia Lions 25....Calgary Stampeders 24 http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gam...4629396-cp.html ***** Next week: Montreal at Winnipeg and Calgary at Saskatchewan. ***** The Als have signed Bashir Levingston for the playoffs. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home ***** The Ticats have fired GM Marcel Desjardins. I wonder if what got the ball rolling on this decision was when I met Bob Young early this year and suggested we have lunch. I told him I would ask him to explain why the team had recently traded DJ Flick to Sask for Rocky Butler. Butler was released in training camp, and Flick went on to have a great year. In any event, it looks like Young is tired of losing. My hunch is that they'll keep Charlie Taffe as head coach, but insist he hire assistants with CFL experience. The defensive coordinator had no Canadian rules football experience, for Pete's sake! http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Ham...4631348-cp.html edit for typo
  17. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20....Montreal Alouettes 17 http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home In Anthony Calvillo's absence, Marcus Brady has QB'd the Als the past two games, not Jason Maas. He looked good tonight, particularly in the first half. Both offenses didn't show much in the second half. Charles Roberts is a little hurt, so backup RB Fred Reid played instead, and had a terrific game. He accounted for over half of the Bombers' yards, and scored two TDs.

  20. The two division all-star teams were announced today. 21. Today I picked up at half price a bag of Brach's candy corn (I'll be thinking of you ss1!) and a bag of Necco wafers. Tomorrow I'll stop at a drug store that last year carried Charleston Chews to see if they have any left. edit for typo
  22. Today I heard Philly Joe's Blues for Dracula on the radio.
  23. This just in: Kerry Joseph, not Joe Smith, is the Western nominee for Outstanding Player. I'm really surprised. Kevin Glenn is the Eatsern nominee. I'll post another link with all of the finalists when I see it. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home ***** I posted Oct. 21 that the Argos have only lost once when Michael Bishop has started at QB. Now I see that the Lions have lost only twice with 3rd string QB Jarious Jackson starting. And he will be a free agent after the Grey Cup! http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...sFootball/Lions
