Miller really knows (of many ways of) how to build a solo meaning he can churn out a decent solo from very little (say motifs or impromptu melodies) though he generally comes up with enough material to work with. I always try to hear his work even if I'm not fond of his bandmates. Get Wingspan (32 Jazz), the original, please. Nice tunes and some of Miller's and Garrett's best solos I can think of. Its sequel, on MaxJazz, is nowhere nearly as good, unfortunately. I remember Hand in Hand to be a decent listen with able and exonereting but not particularly inspired work by Miller, J.Henderson, and Garrett and some lackluster playing by E.Henderson. mikeweil said: "He said on one of them that he tried to play with some more abandon on it, and that's exactly what he has to do to really sound great, IMHO." I agree.

I thought he was not terribly original but certainly possessed the goods to put together coherent and impressive solos (though you're given more the promise and hear the potential rather than one standout solo after another). I had Witness and though it wasn't terrible or anything it didn't do much for me. Along the Way is supposed to be better and I might just give Gordon another chance if I see that at a clearance price. It's also to his credit that he plays with sidemen who are very much his equals.

This is my favorite of the duos I've heard (Live in Paris 1981, I Remember Thelonious [the one I liked the least, traded it], Sempre Amore). I must've memorized at least half of the solos here, and Waldron, don't remember which tune, sorry, plays a more coherent and flowing version of one of his solos off I Remember Thelonious (yes, they're very close and verbatim in parts). This was also the first Lacy/Waldron I got (back when I was living in Turkey, in one of my annual London trips), and really dug even on first spin.

Problem not solved, actually (but thanks, anyway, of course). Anyone who's able to accept payment from credit-cards and is willing to help me? Thanks.

Problem solved. Thanks

I need to send $25 to a friend but he is unable to accept credit-card sourced payments. If your paypal account is linked to your bank account and you can receive credit-card payments, I'd appreciate your help here. Please PM me and I will send you $28 and give you his paypal address. Thanks.

As I've said a number of times, I really like the Parker/McPhee duo disc. I haven't heard the Daisy/Rempis disc but the couple of times I saw Daisy live, with the Vandermark 5, I didn't think he had sufficient control over what he was playing and, as a seperate matter, I didn't like what he was playing much. A host of musicians who hire or play with him seem to think otherwise, though, and I am happy to hear that he has since improved and is able to play clean.

Yes, and it gets an enthusiastic recommendation from me as well.

i really like that amalgam disc. it might be too prosaic for a funny ratt-er? it is weird. i don't know too much tippett, but i would imagine this is one of his most straight performances. but it is isn't a straight set. just sort of rhythmically um plodding? Got this one, and it is beautiful. Watts has such a gorgrous forceful alto sound; Tippett is joyfully extatic (this is not that mainstream for Tippett, actually - his (excellent) discs from late-60s / early-70s (reissued most recently on Disconforme - with Tippett's permission, for a change) are quite easy-listening), and Kent Carter's bass is nice. For me the only quibble is John Stevens too straight-ahead heavy-handed drumming on one (last) track. But overall, an excellent disc. Gokhan, what do you think of it? There was a misunderstanding about this (and The Onliest's Pictures From a Monk Exhibtion) so I only received it today. I'll try to listen to it on Friday.

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
gnhrtg replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks Tjobbe - just ordered half a dozen from that selection, at 3 euros each (one each by Humes, Rollins, Monk, Miles, Konitz, and Waldron, filling the small holes in my collection for these gents, and Songs I Like to Sing, which will be my introduction to Humes). Most likely reiterating this but 2001 also has good prices on Brilliant Classics releases. This time I got the much lauded Janacek/Smetana/Martinu quartets set. I just received my order (had also received a shipping notice a couple of days earlier). Everything arrived in good shape and all the OJC's are Fantasy Studios remastered (one was a digipak and the rest came in jewel cases). -
Added efzeg's boogie.

Added Spring Heel Jack - Live and took a euro off the price of the V5 double-disc.

I just received this and it is the "deluxe box" version. A good deal at 30 euros shipped. -
You make that solo Watts disc sound good, David. Added to the list.

Thanks David, just ordered the Basie and Jack Johnson boxes. -
Here's my order; I have not heard anything by Amalgam or John Law as a leader (but have been looking for a second-hand or on sale copy of Exploded on Impact), and thought here's a nice opportunity to check out some of Dunmall's output, which, given its size, I can only claim to be vaguely familiar with. Still, any thoughts on these discs?

Don't you like this one, Gökhan? To my ears Lupu's one of the better "modern" Schubert interpreters. I do Hans, and agree about Lupu more generally. I just got the 4 disc set of his Schubert recordings, that's why. He'll be performing Mozart's 20th Piano Concerto in Paris late May and we'll get our tickets soon (though I would've preferred a recital or a Romantic era concerto, but we'll see, I never heard him play Mozart).

Lupu Schubert disc added.

It is very good. Very unlikely you'll come away unsatisfied if you're into the genre at all, which you are.

It's been quite a while (more than a year maybe) since my last spin. Neither budges much (and Parker even less than on Dark Rags, for example) and there is very little of the charged ping-pong improv here you might expect Parker to bring in - as Tilbury maintains a background typically unconducive to such improv (interestingly, he also contributes a number of uncharacteristically busy and fleet fingered passages). It's a fine disc though once a year is probably how much I'll return to it. Over the weekend, once I'm back in Fontainebleau and have access to it, I will play this album and see what I make of it. edit: One closer to Hans.

Jazzloft now has Clusone 3's Rara Avis ( ) in stock.

I think you will like it - these are varied and short, within the realm of GTM, pieces and don't stifle the flow of the music or individual contributions thereto.
