  1. His Christmas album grew on me...
  2. "Invitation," the Quartette Tres Bien - a single track as an MP3, from Amazon. First time I ever bought one of these, but when it comes to the Quartette Tres Bien, you have to do what you have to do.
  3. Regarding the "Shotgun/Blind Man, Blind Man" track... The 1994 Verve reissue states, "Although originally issued under this title, the music here has no distinct relationship to 'Blind Man, Blind Man'." (Other than the melody, I guess...) It goes on to say that the Verve files show "Blind Man" was recorded as a separate title at the session, but no one could find the tape. Curious.
  4. There was a discussion about this awhile back - someone had gone back over every speck of the tape and fixed it up, sounded like a big deal (although some noted that it wasn't, really)- couldn't locate the thread... Anyway, did this ever see the light of day?
  5. Forgot about that Goodman/Benson PBS broadcast! But, now that you remind me, can still see the look on Benny's face... Thanks for bringing it up, and keep looking!
  6. The guitar replacing the piano was the gimmick of those albums - to me, it always sounded slightly out of tune. But I've owned them all since they came out, they were always fun - and sometimes more. The Verve reissue of Spanish Grease/Uno Dos Tres (is it still available?) would be the one to get, and the "Talkin' Verve" is also a strong compilation.
  7. I have one of those UK EMI 2-fers (you know the series - lots of Peggy Lee and Julie London) of Latin Lace & Latin Affair. Very enjoyable, at different levels.
  8. Listening to "Daddy Bug" right now, never thought the arrangements added anything, probably - reflecting the age - someone thought they would make the album more commercial? Always prefered the later edition, where the over-dubbing was dropped.
  9. Saw Joni Mitchell in a record store in Soho (NYC) many years ago, she bought "Miles Smiles."

    Jimmy Smith Piano

Once in awhile a Jimmy Smith piano solo pops up - off the top of my head I can think of one on his Elektra album ("Keep On Coming"?) and on "Unfinished Business," on Mercury... Anything else?
  11. Very much looking forward to this - just this past week I've picked up some of the remaining titles I've missed (including that "... And Friends In Concert" - the one with Gene Ammons - like to here some opinions on THAT! -and an earlier Savoy session), so this is very timely for me. But... as has been brought up above, not sure what the criteria for this set is, there are a lot of "Jazz Workshop" performances from that period not included - that's fine, but wonder how the music here was chosen? (I just picked up the "Right Now" CD, recorded at the same time - wouldn't something like that fit in?) (And whatever happened to Jane Getz?)
  12. And, speaking of obscure Henderson, he appears on a 1963 Antonio Diaz date (on Audio Fidelity, the home of Walt Dickerson and the Dukes of Dixieland) - anyone familiar with this? Can't remember ever seeing this one.
  13. Never warmed up to this (had it when it first came out, as well as the Dick Grove), but picked up this reissue and it's much better than I remember! Very nice. And, of course, the sound and packaging are first-rate.
  14. When I caught Kirk (with Horace Parlan) in a club in Cleveland in the mid-60's, he was plugging his upcoming flute album on Mercury. ("Cannonball & Coltrane" - like the Mingus title - was also a reissue of a Mercury album.)

    new OJC Remasters

Bought the Evans (and I need another version of this like I need a hole in the head...)- sounds very good! Lots of bass. I'll pull out the SACD for comparison.

    new OJC Remasters

I actually bought that last version of Ugetsu for the new track - it was a disappointment, just as the extra tracks on a previous reissue were. I think that title (one of the best!) was just about right the way it was originally issued.
  17. The Steig is very good, never understood how that could have been passes over for reissue all these years. Looking forward to ut!
  18. Just spotted it on iTunes.
  19. I'm not sure the Mainstream albums are the best representation of that group - in person they stretched out a lot more, they came across a little more hard hitting.
  20. Very nice package, and nice to have that cut that Michael Cuscuna left off "Stepping Stones" because it was too "commercial" (or whatever word he used). (And what does he have against a tune like that? Many people bought albums FOR a track like that!) (Don't think many people bought "The Sidewinder" for Gary's Notebook...)
  21. My local store is calling it quits, so, at 50% off, I picked up the Hip-O Select Wes Montgomery box, one of those Audio Wave XRCD's (Dexter Gordon, "Doin' Allright") and a used Japanese Blue Note - John Hardee Swingtets.
  22. The audio claims on some of those CD's are pretty ridiculous - "Digitally remastered for the finest sound ever," or something like that. Ha! But this whole discussion of royalties and copyrights is almost quaint in an age when many people don't expect to pay ANYTHING for their music! (I've bought thousands of CD's from a local retailer who is closing up shop next month.)
  23. No topic seems to get folks going more than this one! Well, maybe Ron McMaster... Anyway, what about all those albums and CD's we bought from the Columbia Record Club and BMG - were the artists paid royalties on those?
  24. The older 15 CD set is terrific - maybe the most enjoyable box set I own. And where else can you hear that session with Shelly Manne?
  25. Just bought Volumes 4 & 5 (my local store is calling it quits, everything is 30% off, another sign of the end of the world), after reading this discussion I'm almost afraid to open them, may have bitten off more than I can chew...
