  1. "Boylston," that's better, thanks! Don't think they have stores like that anymore.
  2. In the jazz section of a record store on Boyleston (sp?) in Boston in the mid-70's - a guy says to me, "I'm tired of this crazy shit, I'm getting some George Shearing."
  3. Slightly off topic, but can I get some recommendations for '30's Ellington? I have the other decades pretty well covered, but have little '30's material. Where should I begin? It's overwhelming!

    Joe Henderson

Wish someone had asked him about Blood, Sweat & Tears...
  5. Chuck Israel's "National Jazz Ensemble" (Chiaroscuro) and the Charlie Ventura Proper Box, "Bop For the People/"
  6. Not sure about "Riggarmortes," but maybe Nat Adderley could have received a co-composer credit for "Twice Around."
  7. Thanks for posting this! Looking forward to it. Plus, I have a new word to work with: "secondment."
  8. The new XRCD of "Tom Cat." And, from a used CD store, discs IV & V of the Mosaic Duke Ellington "Capitol" set.
  9. Agree. Garner - one of jazz's most popular artists - could be relegated to a footnote, pretty much forgotten.
  10. From one of those ubiquitous "oldies.com" sales, 5 Ellington "Reprise" titles. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
  11. And, I hate to say it, maybe too much talking. But what the hell. Tried to catch him whenever I could - heard him many times, beginning with the Charles Lloyd sextet up to what may have been his last (or close to it) performance.
  12. Thanks! I'll look for some of those!

    Gene Ludwig

Living in Pittsburgh, I got to hear Ludwig often, in different settings. He was hard to beat! Difficult to pick any one time as more memorable than the others, but his trio with Pat Martino (years ago!) stands out. And the combination of Ludwig, Jimmy Ponder and Roger Humphries would give ANY organ trio a run for their money!
  14. My introduction to Billy Butterfield was on one of those Columbia Conniff LP's (which has been reissued on CD, hard to believe), a lot of shuffle rhythms and wordless vocals. Anyone have any good Butterfield recommendations?
  15. Think this is a different version than the one on the original "Hollywood." There were likely dozens of performances of the tune from that engagement to choose from.
  16. "Billie's Bounce" takes up one side of the LP. (The liner notes mention a second take.) There's a terrific Ella/Joe Williams vocal on the second side. The Basie cuts always seemed superfluous to me, same for the Wallington solo - the side-long "Billie's Bounce" got the most play on my hi-fi. Can't believe no one ever reissued this, and there'd be plenty of room on a CD for the alternate.
  17. Did anyone bite on that "Best of" single CD that came out a couple months ago? It has a single cut that wasn't on the box! Of course. ("Take the A Train.) (It showed up at yourmusic.com, but even at $7 I think I can safely pass.)
  18. Did I miss something? Is this actually for sale? Is it a CD? A 45? SACD? 8 Track?

    Sonny Cox

Cox actually came to my home here in Pittsburgh once - maybe the mid-'80's - he was here for a player's recruiting visit. Anyway, he listened to music for several hours, was very personable - and knowledgable about the music. He wanted me to make him a tape of the Eddie Davis/Johnny Griffin "Minton's" material, which was spread over several albums.
  20. I'll check, but I think it was just a straight PDF file.
  21. My copy of the Horace Silver at Newport from iTunes had a digital book.
  22. Thanks for bringing this subject up again, and for the inlay. Time to bring out the box!
  23. Since I prefer the "groovy" Jimmy Smith to the bop and ballad ("Who Can I Turn To?" Ouch) Jimmy Smith, "Prayer Meetin'" has always been high on my list of favorites. As is "Respect."
  24. The Woody Herman "Mosaic Select." I'm beginning to think the early '60's was the golden age of the big bands!!
  25. "I Like Jazz" - that must have been in a lot of households in the '50's! That, and "Jazz Omnibus." Where is the Columbia Record Club when you need it?
