  1. The other day I......uh, oh, wait, that wasn't me.
  2. Brooke Sofferman - The Green Between (with Jerry Bergonzi on tenor) Alex Sipiagin - Equilibium (Released last month, features Potter, Binney, & Kikoski)
  3. I learned when I was 5. I knew all the rules, and how all the pieces moved. Didn't understand much stragedy though...that took years to develop.
  4. I watched the whole 1st season on DVD. That's some great TV...a sitcom that's actually funny and it doesn't have a laugh track.
  5. Sometimes I squeeze the toothpaste from the middle of the tube.
  6. Andrew Hill - Dance With Death Mongo Santamaria & Justo Betancourt - Ubane
  7. David Binney. His recent recordings have featured Chris Potter and Adam Rogers. South is my personal favorite.
  8. My favorite is Rubio's, whose specialty is the fish taco. Tonight they made me an excellent shrinp burrito. I also appreciate In N Out. The best fries in the whole fast food world are at El Pollo Loco. They're larger than most fries, plenty salty, crispy on the outside, and served piping hot. If you haven't tried 'em you're missing out.
  9. I like that CD a lot. One day I was listening to it at work, though, and guy came in to talk to me. When he head the music he asked, "You have muzak in your office?" Obviously I wasn't listening to elevator music, but at first listen, with all that reverb on the saxophone, it does sound kinda whimpy. ANyways, now I just listen to it at home and in the car.
  10. I've got 6 drawers full of CDs: 3 jazz, 2 rock, the other blugrass/salsa/classical/etc. I like to grab 1 CD from each drawer. And I like to make sure there's some variety in the 6 CDs: some old and some new, something hummable and something challenging, a CD that I've listened to too many times and another that I've neglected. I admit that's not so much a system as it is a guideline for making sure I don't just listen to the same things over and over. Once the 6 discs are selected I do have a very simple system for picking which order to play them in. I do it alphabetically, based on the 2nd letter in the name of the 3rd track. I don't really remember when "3rd track, 2nd letter" became my rule but it rarely lets me down.
  11. Gianluigi Trovesi - Fugace I've never heard so much reverb on Dixieland style music. Vijay Iyer - Panoptic Modes Very interesting. Often reminds of Steve Coleman. Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek Folk/blugrass. More songy, less creative than I'd hoped for.
  12. I once mistakenly bough two copies of Mingus Ah Um...in the same order. There were something like 30 CDs in the order, and I guess it was jut too much for me to keep track of.
  13. Dizzy's woud be the right place for you if you're coming to San Diego.
  14. alldirect.com has it for $97.44. If you buy one more item (and why wouldn't you want to?) you get free shipping.
  15. I've been downloading from Steve Coleman's website...8 CDs worth so far. http://www.m-base.org/sounds.html
  16. Alex Sipiagin - Mirrors...features Dave Kikoski, Adam Rogers, others Andrew Hill - Dusk...finally moving from my wishlist to my collection Johnny Cash - American Recordings
  17. San Diegans are incredibly paranoid about fire right now. I didn't hear any fireworks last night.
  18. North Mississippi Allstars. Great choice. The "greatest innovator" thread inspired me to order 2 CDs today: Henry Threadgill - Where's Your Cup Steve Coleman - Genesis & The Opening of the Way
  19. David Binney - Welcome To Life (Releasesd in April, with Adam Rogers, Chris Potter, Brian Blade) Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Donald Byrd - Live at THe Half Note Calexico - Feast Of Wire (Southwest alt-rock) The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse (Folk)
  20. Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring
  21. I'm gonna fire up my smoker and throw in some spare ribs, salmon, and halibut. I'm also gonna try the jalapeno-pecan-sweet potato recipe that was posted on this board a few months ago. And I will drink beer.
  22. I bought a couple of discs from this guy recently. It took almost two weeks for them to arrive (and I'm in the same state as the seller). I won't give the guy positive feedback for that kind of service after I pay $3.95 for S&H.
  23. Stephen Chopek & Chris Lovejoy - Brain Trust A couple years ago I saw these two guys playing percussion for Charlie Hunter. They nearly stole the show. I thought this CD would be fun, even though it's almost entirely percussion. Well it's not fun. There isn't enough rhymic activity to make up for the lack of melody & harmony. I haven't been able to get through the whole disc yet.
