Very sad news. Very good reason to play all my Jimmy Smith CDs over the next couple of days.

Miles Davis - At The Blackhawk box Angelique Kidjo - Oyaya! Incubus - Make Yourself Yo-Yo Ma - Brahms Cello Concertos All for $37 bucks from yourmusic.com.

I store all my CDs in Univenture sleeves. 4 sleeves take up less space than a jewel box, and they hava a pouch for the front and back graphics.
-
Good point. They don't waste any time ringing up that first queued disc. They're pulling from my queue today, even though I just enrolled yesterday. Thanks.

Damnit!! Why do you guys have to point out yourmusic.com??? I've been trying to *reduce* the number of CDs I buy, and honestly I've shown a lot of restraint in the last 6 months or so. But at $4.99 per disc, how am I supposed to hold back? I don't have the willpower to say no to twenty buck box sets. So I signed up, and am leaning toward Monk's Dream as the first in my queueue, or maybe something by Angelique Kidjo. I will probably order the Jack Johnson box before the end of the weekend.

My avatar is the cover of Chucho Valdes' Lucumi, an album I don't own. I just think it looks cool.
-
Lisa Sokolov - Presence I rarely enjoy jazz vocals, but Downbeat gave this 5 stars, and the downloadable sound snippets give me the impression that this is very creative music. David Murray - Now Is Another Time Murray does salsa. Geoff Keezer - Zero One He covers Radiohead and Bjork, and performs his own tune Hibiscus, which was the highlight of the Storms/Nocturns trio recording.

A giant leap for mankind

Wireless rules. Tonight I've been surfing in my backyard while smoking a cigar. (It hasn't been easy because these San Diego winters can be brutal. I had to put on a sweatshirt at 8:30. B-) ) -
Your 5 favorite JAZZ purchaces on CD in 2004.
GloriousBlues replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Brooke Sofferman - One Stone Two Birds...the leader plays the drums and writes all the music for this band. The rhythms are interesting, the meloides often catchy, and Jerry Bergonzi kicks ass on the sax. Also there's one track with this woman kind of grunting and moaning like she's having the best sex of her life, and then her moans become the backbone for the rhythm of the tune...that is a hot piece of music. Vijay Iyer - Panoptic Modes...I learned about this disc from a thread somewhere on this message board...thanks to whoever recommended it. The music reminds me of Coltrane/Tyner at times because of the fire and emotion that I hear in it. It reminds me also of Steve Coleman's music because of the relentless rhythms. Alex Sipiagin - Mirrors...A Criss Cross CD with one of my favorite pianists, Dave Kikoski, and Dave Binney, an alto saxer whose music I just love. I've listened to several Sipiagin/Kikoski collaborations, and if nothing else, they feature hard fast swingin'. Mirrors is no exception. Andrew Hill - Dusk and The Day The World Stood Still...both are beautiful, and both have been highly recommended by other board members. Some others that I enjoyed.... Jason Moran - Modernistic Charlie Hunter - Right Now Move Fly - Fly -
2004-05 Hot Stove League
GloriousBlues replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I have mixed feelings about what my Giants have done so far this spring. Their most glaring weakness in 2004 was relief pitching. The 'pen let down the team all year long and to make things worse, on the last weekend of the season they blew a big 9th inning lead while handing the NL West crown to LA. So what does Brian Sabean do? He goes out and signs the best free agent reliever out there, Armando Benitez. That guy might have been better than Gagne in '04. Great signing. But SF's other two acquisitions don't look so great: They picked up Omar Vizquel, a light hitting shortstop and Mike Metheny, a guy who is so bad at the plate, if you just read news stories, you'd think his first name was The Light Hitting. I just can't believe they may have found a catcher who will make more outs than AJ Pierzynskit did. Those two moves don't do anything to help the Giants' offense, which has been a one-man show for several years. -

What's wrong with sex shop owners supporting politcal causes? All citizens have a right to oppose taxes that that go straight to the pockets of baseball team owners. -
I'm a big Metheny fan. My favorite disc of his might be the self-titled Pat Metheny Group. It was before he got into the Braziallian vocal thing, and focuses more on his guitar playing than other PMG recordings. One of Lyle Mays' hottest solos on record is here, on the track Lone Jack. Other Metheny reoordings that I love are Letter From Home (I could listen to the title track and 45/8 over and over without ever tiring of them), Speaking Of Now, and Trio 99. I still don't own 80/81, mostly because I'm too cheap to buy a 2CD ECM recording that's never on sale. It's on my Christmas list for at least the 5th yea in a row. If Santa doesn't come through, I may finally break down and buy it.

The new REM gets my vote for worst packaging for a single CD. It has a large sheet of lyrics that's folded up like a map, and the cardboard case it comes in doesn't have a pouch to hold the lyric sheet. Every time I try to pick it up the lyrics fall right out. Fortunately I won't need to pick up the case very often since the music contains about as many surprises as a bottle of water.

I placed an order for these 2 Roy Campbell - Ethnic Stew and Brew Vijay Iyer - Blood Sutra

"definately" vs. "definitely"

Aaah. I misunderstood you. It's from the introduction to The Best American Sports Writing 2002. -
"definately" vs. "definitely"

Why do you think we need more adverbs? I disagree. There are better ways to describe verbs. In one of the best introductions to a book I have ever read, Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated listed ten ways to for aspiring sportswriters to improve. One of them was to avoid adverbs: -

That one bug's me too. So do other unnecessary uses of apostrophe's. -
Dunno. SCI doesn't have one, either... Hmmm...you're right. I could swear I remembered hearing a banjo in their band.
-
I really like SCI's mixture of jamrock and bluegrass. I second the Carnival recommendation...it's mostly very upbeat, joyous music. They also release most of their shows on CD, at a very reasonable 15 bucks for 3-disc sets. Why don't more rock bands have a banjo player????
-
Why? That show is on T.V. constantly.

Out of the bird, crispy on top, drenched in gravy.

Fried Bird Mashed Potatoes Stuffin Muffins Green Beans Whatever the guests bring for dessert Most importantly.... Anchor Steam Lots of red wine

Blue Mitchell - The Thing To Do (Fungii Mama is a great tune. I had only heard Kenny Barron's version of it before tonight.) DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (A serious change of pace for me. Interesting music. Not very lively. I doubt I'll be playing this a lot)
