I have Donald Byrd's allegedly first recording, live in Detroit with Yusef Lateef and Barry Harris and I think it is quite good--a tight group that stretches out nicelyon several tunes. Recommended.
I have all the albums up to 1977 and a live one from 2000. IMO Steig Aus is absolutely fabulous and their best from that era. We Keep On is excellent and has the most Mariano. The live album showcases some less interesting and meandering ethnic music.
If you like Embryo you should check out Xhol or Xhol Caravan for extended jazz rock jamming.
Sonny Stitt w/ Art Blakey "In Walked Sonny" on Sonet--is that a UK label? Found a really clean copy for $12 on my weekend trip to NYC--signed by Blakey!!
Taylor/Winstone/Wheeler-"Azimuth" (first LP on ECM)
Helen Merrill/Dick Katz - "The Feeling is Mutual" (Milestone)
Thanks.
I don't know everything that is going on, but I'm checking out Zorn and Steve Bernstein at Tonic on the 31st, largely because I like the venue and it is a ten minute walk from my house. It should be a pretty good show.
any live music recommendations for this weekend? I also need some vinyl stores to plan my scavenger hunt? Anyone have suggestions?

Myra Melford at the Cornelia Street Cafe on the 15th! Would not miss it.
I'm going up New Year's weekend, 12/28-1/1. Any recommendations for similar artists then?
Also I need to feed my vinyl habit--recommendations on a few Manhattan or Brooklyn record stores?

I had the pleasure of seeing him play twice--he showed that you can ripen with age! Some of his older LPs are available on CD. Highly recommended. He'll be missed.
The Elvin set is gone--in fact the last 12 sets were incomplete when promised to the last several buyers. But a BIG HATS OFF to HEAD MAN who came thorugh and generously burned me a copy of disc 1 to complete a gaping hole in my set.
Thanks for being a model jazz citizen.
HELP! I had the same experience. Apparently happened to about a dozen of us.
I too am in the market for a disc 1 with insert. Anyone able to help me?

Some of the JRVGs were combined into 2CD jewel cases and imported from Japan, proinently displaying JRVG with bonus tracks and a fat obi. I have the 2CD Blue Note Monk and the Jazz Messengers 2CD from Birdland. I also saw the JM from the Cafe Bohemia in the same format.
