epistrophy arts replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I hear ya... I can hardly believe it myself. Noel, the graphic designer told me that Revenant took considerable pains to keep the price very low. I asked if $85 was the wholesale price and he replied No.... retail. -
Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
epistrophy arts replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Hello folks, I just got my advance copy of Holy Ghost! Man Oh Man what a set! I have not even listened to the music yet. It is so overwhelming. It comes in a beautiful plastic box. 9 CDs, a hardbound book and some really nice surprises... I have never seen a box set like this. It really raises the bar. I've been told that the retail price will be around $85... Which is really unbelievable considering the heft of this thing... The book is incredible. Ben Young did a wonderful job with the research. The chapter of testimonials from Ayler's peers and witnesses is amazing. It is a wonderful assessment of the man's work and it is likely to raise the profile of free jazz and improvised music. The press release indicates that it will be released on October 5 and I understand there are a couple of release parties/events in the works in Austin, Marfa Texas and NYC. I'll keep you all posted. in the meantime you can get a look at the box here.... http://home.austin.rr.com/subculture/news.htm thanks pg moreno Austin, TX -
Thanks Brandon, I really appreciate it. I'll keep doing the concerts as long as people come out...

You just have to invite them... Seriously, all it takes is 1 or a couple of dedicated folks to set it up. Rent a space, book a hotel room, make some flyers, write a press release etc. It is risky and often frustrating, but worth it. Try to find a few folks willing to guarantee some $$ against losses. The important thing is to stick with it until a solid audience builds around your events. Some people spend more on records and stereo equipment than we lose on events. We could definitely use another stop in Texas for visiting improvisers. There are so many artists who want to come to Texas. I get so many proposals it is ridiculous. I can only manage to do a handful of concerts a year, and I need to limit my activity to artists I really believe in. With enough stops in Texas (Austin, Houston, San Antonio, DFW, Marfa?) a visiting artist could manage an entire tour... Are there any other folks in this forum who are involved in grass-roots presenting? I would love to hear about your experiences.

Friday, April 30, 8pm Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex 2201 Preston Street $12 tickets available at the door for information and directions call 713-928-5653 Presented by Pauline Oliveros Foundation Houston Saturday May 1, 8pm Ballet Austin Academy (3002 Guadalupe) $14 adv tickets available at Waterloo Records and 33 Degrees ($15 cash, $16 charge) Presented by Epistrophy Arts http://www.marilyncrispell.com "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz." Jon Pareles, N.Y. Times "For two decades, Marilyn Crispell has been one of the most highly regarded pianists at the sharp end of contemporary jazz." John Fordham, The Guardian (London, England) "one can't quite believe that she can play so perfectly and still be human" Scott Yanow, Downbeat Magazine Marilyn Crispell was schooled in classical music, studying piano from the age of 7. Graduating in piano and composition from the New England Conservatory of Music, she came late to jazz, but by 1978 was teaching at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio. There she met many musicians with whom she has since worked, including Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake and, most crucially, Anthony Braxton. Extensive touring and recording with Braxton raised her critical profile and paved the way for numerous albums of her own, for a plethora of little labels. Crispell's recordings have ranged from solo improvisations to programs of Coltrane's music to performances of contemporary composition (by Manfred Niehaus, Robert Cogan, Barry Guy and others). Documented encounters with improvisers have included meetings with Fred Anderson, Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, Irène Schweizer, Eddie Prévost, Billy Bang, Tim Berne and the massed cast of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Amongst her influences, Crispell has cited Coltrane, Bach, Webern, Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Annette Peacock. and Coming on June 6th. Han Bennink solo percussion + special guest. Church of the Friendly Ghost Epistrophy Arts is sponsored by individual contributions, Revenant Sound Laboratories, CreOpMuse, and the City of Austin under the Auspices of the Arts Commission.

The Thing w/ Joe McPhee in Texas
epistrophy arts replied to epistrophy arts's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Yes, the members of the Thing will all be in NO, but they will not perform. The Tentet is only playing in Athens, NO and Austin. It should be a very memorable series of concerts. -
The Thing w/ Joe McPhee in Texas
epistrophy arts replied to epistrophy arts's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Unfortunately not. Mats is on a tight schedule and needs to return to Sweden shortly after the Brotzmann Tentet tour. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to host their first US tour here in Texas. We have been trying to get the Thing here for the last 2 years. I am going to try to make it to all 3 concerts, I'll post a review on this forum. -
The Thing from Norway, Sweden and the US will be making their first tour of the US. They will perform at the ACME festival in Athens GA and continue on to Texas for the remainder of the tour. From Sweden and Norway, The Thing represents the most visceral and expressive extreme of "free jazz". The Thing are Europe's most intense young jazz musicians, yet they refer to themselves as a "garage band". When they put their energy together and perform, the collective force is overwhelming. They play with the power of a rock band, but without amplifiers. The group's repertoire reflects the diversity of their influences. Pieces by jazz legends Don Cherry and James Blood Ulmer are played alongside covers of PJ Harvey and The White Stripes. Their 2 recent releases on Crazy Wisdom/Universal have sold out. They will be touring in support of a forthcoming release on the Norwegian label Small Town Supersounds. The Thing are joined by living legend Joe McPhee. The American multi-instrumentalist is a veteran of the 60's New York "Fire Music" that is at the heart of The Thing. In his lyrical and soulful playing lies the true cry of the blues. McPhee is one of the most in-demand artists in Jazz and an authentic and vital messenger of its radical avant-garde. to hear samples of their music log on to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3...16fsatoko.shtml http://www.alphamusic-shop.com/5430354.html *Joe McPhee (New York City) - Saxophones and Trumpet *Mats Gustafsson (Sweden) - Saxophones *Paal Nilssen-Love (Norway) - Drums *Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Norway) - Bass Texas Tour Dates Friday April 9 8pm Austin Texas presented by Epistrophy Arts Auditorium on Waller Creek (4100 Red River) for info and tickets call 512-302-5233 or email epistrophyarts@hotmail.com Saturday April 10 8pm Houston Texas Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex 2201 Preston Street for more info dovedavedove@yahoo.com http://www.pofinc.org/houston/ Sunday April 11 The Thing in San Antonio at the Art Lodge email sanford@texas.net for info
