At the core of ICP are its founders: pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink whose jazz credentials were firmly established in the 60s with collaborations with Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughn, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, etc .In addition to the concert, members of the ensemble will conduct a lecture at LBJ Fine Arts Academy. www.icporchestra.com Friday, March 30 Live recording with the Creative Opportunity Orchestra featuring Tina Marsh, Alex Coke, John Mills, and more. 2. www.icporchestra.org Instant Composers Pool Orchestra (Amsterdam) Thursday March 29, 2007 8PM Carver Theater (1165 Angelina Street) tickets availabe at Waterloo REcords and End of An Ear $18 advance, $20 door Epistrophy Arts kicks off its 9th season of adventurous international jazz on Thursday March 29th at the Carver Theater (1165 Angelina) with Amsterdam’s ICP Orchestra, co-led by Misha Mengleberg, piano, and Han Bennink, drums. Together since 1967, ICP features some of the best Dutch and European improvisers on the planet: Ab Baars, Michael Moore and Tobias Delius, reeds, Thomas Heberer, trumpet, Wolter Wierbos, trombone, Mary Oliver, violin, Tristan Honsinger, cello, and Ernst Glerum, bass. The Instant Composers Pool Orchestra encompasses a full range of modern music: Ellington and Monk, Kurt Weill and European dance band music, Webern-like chamber music, South African kwela, free improvisation, conducted improvisation, interactive games, counterpoint and simultaneity, catchy melodies, pastel harmonies, order and built - in chaos. "ICP's mix is perplexing in the best sense: the music doesn't give up its secrets on first hearing, or second, or third”, writes Kevin Whitehead in his book, New Dutch Swing. “It keeps you coming back. This is jazz /improvised music at its most deft and sophisticated." Misha Mengelberg co-founded the Instant Composers Pool - a nonprofit collective of Dutch composers/improvisers/instrumentalists - with Han Bennink and Willem Breuker in 1967. He has performed in duo with Han Bennink for more than 30 years and led the ICP Orchestra for more than 20. His other credits include performing and recording with Eric Dolphy, John Tchicai, Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy, Peter Brötzmann, and many others. Han Bennink is one of the most in-demand drummers in Europe. He has performed and recorded with jazz musicians such as Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, as well as European improvisers such as Peter Brötzmann, Derek Bailey, and Willem Breuker. He trained as a graphic artist and has exhibited work in several media, including sculptures from found objects that can include broken drum heads and drumsticks; he also designs many of his own LP and CD sleeves. “This band continues to show that cutting-edge music-making is not necessarily dour and humorless,” wrote Howard Reich recently in The Chicago Tribune, “that innovative ideas need not be severed from generations of jazz tradition and that composition and improvisation can coexist effectively when a group of like-minded tinkerers knows what it's doing.” Tickets are $18 in advance at Waterloo Records (600A N Lamar Blvd) and End of An Ear Records (2209 South First Street).. $20/door. Nameless Sound Presents Legendary Master Trumpet Player and Composer Wadada Leo Smith in Performance With Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet Wadada Leo Smith - trumpet, electronics Famoudou Don Moye - drums, percussion John Lindberg - bass Woody Aplanalp - guitar, electronics Saturday, November 4 2006 8pm at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex 2201 Preston $13 General Admission, $10 Students, Everyone Under 18 Gets In For Free For Information and Directions Call 713-928-5653 Or Go To www.namelesssound.org High Resolution Photo Available On Request A highly original and extremely influential artist, Wadada Leo Smith has made a profound and distinct impression in the areas of performance, composition, education, and musical philosophy. As a trumpet player, Smith is in a category of his own. His clear, powerful tone is beautiful and immediately recognizable. The patience with which he executes his ideas opens up a warm expression of humanity. His phrases are shaped with clarity, intention, and a keen sense of musical space. In the 1960s Smith was an early member of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), Chicago's pioneering, musician-run community organization. Like his AACM colleagues, Smith is the creator of a distinct, personal, and highly developed musical notation system. This compositional language, called Ankhrasmation," takes into account Smith?s roots in musical tradition, his understanding of global musical forms, his mastery of composition, and his commitment to creative improvisation. Smith?s Ankhrasmation is an expression of his universal outlook. It is a system that creates space for individual creativity and diverse musical languages. Smith was born in Leland, Mississippi, where he was raised in the heart of African American musical cultures, including the Delta blues and the African American concert and marching band traditions. As an emerging artist, Smith was at the forefront of the avant-garde in jazz along with AACM colleagues like Anthony Braxton and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Smith's study of contemporary European concert music is balanced by his immersion in world music forms, including African, Japanese, and Indonesian traditions. Wadada Leo Smith is currently the Director of the MFA program in African American Improvisation at the California Institute for the Arts. Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet will feature another legend of creative music, percussionist Famadou Don Moye, most famous as a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Veteran bass virtuoso John Lindberg and up-and-coming guitarist Woody Aplanalp round out the ensemble

The work of Cooper-Moore is a testament to commitment, vision, spirit, compassion, and invention. Born and raised in the Piedmont Area of the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches as a child prodigy. In the early 1970’s he moved to New York, and began his association with the fertile and revolutionary “loft scene” of underground jazz, collaborating with such musicians as David S. Ware, Marc Edwards, and William Parker. An accomplished composer and virtuosic piano player, Cooper-Moore quit public performance in 1981, depriving the creative music world of a unique and vital talent. He dedicated himself to youth, working intensively with a variety of communities. He has developed and implemented his own music curriculum; and has been sent around the country by Head Start to teach it to others. For the last 25 years, Cooper-Moore has assisted the disabled, the incarcerated, the at-risk, and the underserved; affecting them with his passion and understanding of personal and community progress through creative work. In the early 90’s, Cooper-Moore returned to public performance and was discovered by a new generation of fans. His unique talents were a revelation. He is a renaissance man, whose performances encompass honest and insightful storytelling, wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, and intensely virtuosic piano playing. Cooper-Moore is the quintessential “unsung hero”. He is an artist who understands the urgent need for unique voices. He delivers on his commitments, both in the community and on the stage. Cooper-Moore will be in residency for a week of workshops for children at homeless shelters, organized in partnership with ArtBridge Houston. For close to an hour the three explored countless uncharted territories around the realm of modern jazz and free improvisation. Each of the artists were comfortable and inspired enough to weave effortlessly in and out of the forefront, inviting and inciting one another to take the music one step further…The music took off into beautiful free excursions with all three improvising simultaneously but supporting and backing each other all the way. And before you knew it, they were swinging furiously. This was trio improvising at its best.” - Pat Frisco (jazzcornertalk.com)

He first became known in the early '90s as the pianist in the David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began leading his own dates ‹ most often including Ware bandmate, leading bassist William Parker ‹ and recording a number of duets with a variety of musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri, who began appearing on recordings in the 1990s. Through his range of live and recorded performances, and unswerving individual development, Shipp came to be regarded as a prolific and respected voice in creative music by the decade's close. Born in the 1960s and raised in Wilmington, DE, Matthew Shipp grew up around '50s jazz recordings. He began playing piano at the young age of five, and decided to focus on jazz by the time he was 12. Shipp played on a Fender Rhodes in rock bands while privately devouring recordings by a variety of jazz players. His first mentor was a man in his hometown named Sunyata, who had an enthusiasm for a variety of studies in addition to music. Shipp later studied music theory and improvisation under Clifford Brown's teacher Robert "Boisey" Lawrey, as well as classical piano and bass clarinet for the school band. After one year at the University of Delaware, Shipp left and took lessons with Dennis Sandole for a short time, after which he attended the New England Conservatory of Music for two years. Shipp moved to N.Y.C. in 1984 and soon met bassist William Parker, among others. Both were playing with tenor saxophonist Ware by 1989, and debuted as a recording artist in a duo with alto player Rob Brown. Shipp married singer Delia Scaife around 1990. He then went on to lead his own trio with Parker and drummers Whit Dickey and Susie Ibarra. Shipp has led dates for a number of labels, including FMP, No More, Eremite, Thirsty Ear, Silkheart, and more. In 2000, Shipp began acting as curator for Thirsty Ear's Blue Series. This excellent series hosted a number of Shipp's own recordings, as well as the recordings of William Parker, Tim Berne, Roy Campbell, Craig Taborn, Spring Heel Jack, and Mat Maneri. The following year saw the release of Nu Bop, an exploration into traditional jazz. His unfinished studies in physics, mathematics and musicology mainly created a penchant for activities in a Dada vein, as did several unsuccessful jobs in offices and other well-organized systems. In the late 1970s he took up saxophone and started to compose music, and a few years later a real breakthrough occurred: he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice. At present, he has developed into a prolific writer/composer and a specialist in the performance of sound poetry, supported by a powerful stage presence and an almost childlike freedom in improvisation. He has performed in many European countries, as well as in the U.S., Canada, Indonesia, South Africa and Latin America. Besides working as a soloist, he has collaborated with many musicians and ensembles in the field of contemporary and improvised music, including Paul Lytton, Mats Gustafsson, Michael Zerang, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Melvyn Poore, Paul Dutton, Nicolas Collins, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He has performed several compositions by the German composer Carola Bauckholt, including a piece for voice and orchestra. A solo voice piece was commissioned by the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2002. Blonk is the founder and leader of Splinks, a 15-piece orchestra playing his compositions, and BRAAXTAAL, an avant-rock trio with synthesizer and drums. He also has his own record label, Kontrans. His work for radio and television includes several commissioned radio plays. He also makes larger-scale drawings of his scores, which have been exhibited. Blonk is an energetic workshop leader too, who has taught in many different countries, including a lot of work with children. A recent development is his involvement with electronics, in the form of work created by sampling and processing the sounds of his voice. Jaap Blonk keeps on searching the rich common ground between poetry and music. He is always after new sounds and combinations of sounds, without abandoning completely the semantics of language. His live performances are music, poetry and performance art all at the same time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Chris Cogburn (austin) percussion Drummer Chris Cogburn is an active performer, educator and organizer within an expansive community of creative artists. Chris has performed around the US and Canada with musicians from across North America, Europe, Mexico and Japan, including John Butcher (London), Dave Dove (Houston), Joelle Leandre (France), Tatsuya Nakatani (Japan) Joe McPhee (New York) and avant-rock outsider Jandek. Cogburn has been increasingly active within various dance/movement communities, having recently participated in the Movement Research Festival in NYC, performing with NYC-based dancers/choreographers Jennifer Monson and Margit Galanter. He has led workshops on creative music making around North America, working in contexts as diverse as inner city community centers, homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, public and private high schools, dance studios, a church and Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening Space - as part of a residency in the fall of 2002. In the summer of 2005 Cogburn held a month long residency through Seattle Improvised Music, enabling him to lead numerous workshops throughout the Northwest. As an organizer, Cogburn has previously hosted Austin performances by International improvisors, always in direct collaboration with local artists. Beginning in the summer of 2003, Cogburn’s Creative Music Workshop has hosted an annual festival of improvised music - the No Idea Festival - showcasing a handful of Texas' premiere creative musicians in collaboration with improvisors from around the U.S., Europe, Japan, Mexico and Canada. Regarded as “one of the finest creative improvised music festivals in the world” (Joe Milazzo, Paris Transatlantic) NIF aspires to connect creative musicians and to provide the space and time where new (and old) relationships can flourish, leading towards new (and old) areas and approaches in the music. A 2-CD set documenting last year's No Idea Festival (2004) was released in November 2004 on Cogburn's own ten pounds to the sound record/dvd label. This limited-edition double CD document has received wide acclaim across the US and Europe as “one of the principal documents of late 20th Century / early 21st Century new music from Texas.” (Joe Milazzo, One Final Note magazine, US). Reviews have also recognized the festival’s role as a beacon for the future direction of creative music - “It's a great set, and one that anyone interested in trying to chart the future course of improvised music – on either side of the Atlantic or for that matter the Pacific – should check out at the earliest opportunity.” (Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic magazine, Paris, France) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KURT NEWMAN (austin) amplified guitar Guitarist Kurt Newman has been playing improvised music for over a decade. A native of Toronto, he came of age musically during his stint in Montreal in his late teens, where he played slide guitar with avant-country band Sackville, which included a number of folks (Harris Newman, Genevieve Heistek, Eric Craven, Ian Ilavsky) who would go on to create the storied Montreal underground music scene. Moving back to Toronto in 1996, Newman formed the intense guitar-drums duo Wrist Error with Mike Gennaro in the late 1990s. This group played many gigs in Toronto and the USA, and released the acclaimed CD "Tempo Tempo" in 2000. They also served as the house band and bookers for the Ulterior Music Series. The acclaimed series ran for several seasons at the Victory Cafe in Toronto. At the same time, Newman was involved in a variety of other projects Throughout Canada, including collaborating with John Oswald, Michael Snow, Allison Cameron, Eric Chenaux, Martin Arnold, Ryan Driver, Aimee Dawn Robinson, Sam Shalabi and Alexandre St-Onge. In London, Ontario, Newman performed at the Nihilist Spasm Band's No Music Festival and is featured on the "No Music 2" box set (Entarte Kunst). In 2000, Gennaro and Newman recorded a trio CD, "Port Huron Picnic" (Spool) with Swedish reeds master Mats Gustafsson in Chicago. This CD has earned rave reviews from a number of publications, including the most recent edition of the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD. Newman has performed numerous times in the Windy City, making connections with musicians such as Kevin Drumm, Michael Colligan, and Fred Lonberg-Holm.During this period, Newman also had the opportunity to play gigs with European improvisors John Butcher, Roger Turner and Thomas Lehn. It is also at this time that Newman formed his relationship with US avant-legend Eugene Chadbourne. After moving to Austin, Texas in 2002, Newman initiated a number of fertile creative partnerships. Currently, Newman's main musical priorities are a minimalist/shred project with Nick Hennies, The Long Telegram, a trio with Hennies and Cogburn, Vic Firth and The Lutherans, and the completion and release of a number of solo recordings. Press: "From a hollow bodied electric, Kurt Newman coaxes a variety of sounds in hammering, stroking, rubbing, fingerings and placements, creating a contrapuntal deluge of simultaneous musical noise, harmonics, and sound events. One of the most interesting new stylists I've heard in a long time." LaDonna Smith, The Improvisor

Edward "Kidd" Jordan (New Orleans) - tenor saxophone William Parker (New York City) - bass Alvin Fielder (Jackson, MS) - drums legends of the free jazz underground . . . . . . Saturday, December 3 2005 8pm at the ElDorado Ballroom 2310 Elgin $13 general admission $10 students Everyone under 18 gets in for free. for information and directions, call 713-928-5653 or go to www.pofinc.org/houston This concert is co-sponsored by KTRU Houston and Project Row Houses. It is part of the Project Row Houses ElDorado Ballroom Series. Edward "Kidd" Jordan is one of the great unrecognized talents in the history of Jazz. Those who have heard him will never forget his sound: the majestic tone, the searching spirituality of his phrasing, his virtuosic execution, and his boundless (yet disciplined) sense of freedom. Jordan is not only a veteran of numerous blues, pop and R&B groups (Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes). He has also played with many of the great names in contemporary jazz (Ed Blackwell, Ellis Marsalis, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley, Cecil Taylor). Jordan has long been associated with music education due to his position at Southern University at New Orleans, his work with children, documented by 60 Minutes, and his educational programs in Sierra Leone, Senegal and Mali. The French government recognized him with a knighthood for his contribution to the European performing arts. William Parker is one of the most important leaders of the current avant-garde of jazz. He is a powerful bass player whose unique style suggests a universal music that is beyond genre. Being the central figure of New York's free jazz underground, he is an inspiration to listeners and musicians alike. He has performed with almost every major artist in the music. A Houston favorite, Parker's appearances are always a memorable occasion. This concert will mark the return to Houston of Alvin Fielder. While a pharmacy student at Texas Southern University in the 1950s, Alvin Fielder was drummer for the Pluma Davis Band, the house band at Houston's historic ElDorado Ballroom. Fielder went on to make history as a founder of Chicago's AACM, one of the pioneering musician-collectives and an important organization in the development of avant-garde jazz. Fielder is a freeform drummer who navigates his journey in reference to the irresistible pulse of swing. He is a rhythm expert who is keenly aware of tradition. Fielder uses that sensibility to propel himself into limitless regions of expression. The Deep Listening Institute Houston has landed. UNCUT "The sheer power they can generate from wood, metal, breath and muscle is stunning" BBC Absurdly cool. DJ Magazine Free Jazz ecstasy meets the intensity of Garage Rock. The Thing blends the spontaneity and imagination of classic free jazz with the emotional immediacy of underground garage rock. With acoustic traditional jazz instrumentation, the three young Scandinavians can match the power of the fiercest rock band. The Thing's repertoire consists of 60's era new-jazz (Don Cherry, Ayler, James Blood Ulmer, David Murray) and reinterpretations of underground rock classics (PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Sonics). This is no watered down jazz-rock. The Thing take the most uncompromising aspects of both genres and turn up the heat. The Thing are joined by living legend Joe McPhee. The American multi-instrumentalist is a veteran of the 60's New York "Fire Music" that is at the heart of The Thing. In his lyrical and soulful playing lies the true cry of the blues. McPhee is one of the most in-demand artists in Jazz and an authentic and vital messenger of its radical avant-garde. Epistrophy Arts is proud to collaborate with Austin's historic Victory Grill for this exciting event. The Victory Grill is Austin's original home for blues and jazz. Opened in 1945, this historic venue has hosted performances by some of the most important figures in American music. In addition to concerts by R&B and blues legends like Chuck Berry, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, B.B. King, and others, the Victory featured appearances by new jazz luminaries like Ornette Coleman, Bobby Bradford, Dewey Redman, Prince Lasha, Charles Moffett, among others. About the artists. Mats Gustafsson - Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore once described Mats as "the most modern of players where the genre tags of jazz, noise, experimental, avant-whatever are finally transcended to a new millennium-where compositional concepts are at once in check with open improvisation and a super-modernism what we always wanted: rock & roll". Mats is currently Sweden's and perhaps Europe's most well-known artist within free improvised music. He has established himself as a saxophonist with a broad repertoire of extended techniques on level with Evan Parker and John Butcher. Mats' list of collaborators is impressive; Jim O'Rourke, Barry Guy, Paul Lovens, Han Bennink, The Ex, Fugazi's Guy Picciotto, Peter Brotzmann, David Grubbs, Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark and many more. In addition to the Thing, Mats is a regular member of GUSH, The Peter Brotzmann Tentet, Aaly Trio, Diskaholics Anonymous etc. Bassist Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen Love are considered to be Norway's heaviest rhythm section. Both are graduates of Norway's prestigious Trondheim Musical Conservatory. They have played in numerous settings and have performed and recorded with the likes of Pat Metheny, Evan Parker, Wibutee, Peter Brotzmann, and many others. Both are members of School Days with Ken Vandermark, the Scorch Trio and Atomic who won last years Norwegian Grammy award for best jazz album. JOE MCPHEE - The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD calls Joe McPhee "one of the most consistently impressive and adventurous composer/instrumentalists in the music industry." McPhee, as with many visionary American artists, enjoys wide acclaim in Europe. A Jazz renegade whose visions were forged in the fires of the 1960's free-jazz underground and honed by a lifetime of experiences, Joe is featured on numerous recordings on a wide assortment of prestigious labels such as Hat Art, Atavistic, CIMP, Deep Listening, OKKA, Leo and many others. http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/rec/ps/efi/mgustafs.html http://www.ingebrigtflaten.com/ http://www.paalnilssen-love.com/news.php http://www.joemcphee.com/ About Epistrophy Arts: www.epistrophyarts.org Epistrophy Arts is a grass roots cultural organization dedicated to presenting the finest in adventurous music in Austin Texas. 24. You won't regret buying this box.... There is so much here to discover, it is ridiculous. Given Revenant's cred, I can't wait to see if mainstream publications like GQ, Wall Street Journal, Time etc will review it... and I can't wait to hear Albert Ayler played on NPR programs! As for legitimacy issues... Revenant is good people. I have every confidence that they are doing everything by the book. As an aside and in the interest of full disclosure. Revenant has been very active in supporting local grass roots cultural activity in Austin. My organization Epistrophy Arts has been presenting concerts locally for 7 years. Revenant has graciously supported our efforts by sponsoring our concert series and providing hospitality to our visiting artists. They are the real deal! check out this nice review in the Guardian.... http://books.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,1311272,00.html P.G. Moreno Epistrophy Arts Austin, Texas
