Sonic Transmissions Festival Debuts in Austin, Texas in September; The Festival, Organized by Renowned Bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, To Bring Free-Jazz Legends to Austin for Sonic Trasmissions Aug 3, 2015 – From Thursday, September 10 to Saturday, September 12, Sonic Transmissions, directed and curated by the international renowned bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and his six piece genre-melting orchestra The Young Mothers, takes over The North Door in Austin. The festival will also feature an a-list cast of the legends of free jazz, one of Texas’ best post-punk engineers of the current no-wave aesthetic, and a night that showcases the contemporary direction of Texas experimental hip-hop. Headlining the three-day festival are multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, a free jazz elder statesman who has collaborated and recorded with Jimmy Garrison, Clifford Thornton, Peter Brötzmann, and Evan Parker; the international touring machine of Spray Paint, an Austin-based post-punk band featuring guitarist/vocalist Cory Plump, guitarist/vocalist George Dishner, and drummer Chris Stephenson; and a hip-hop bill that includes Houston-based Jawwaad Taylor, Guilla, and female rap frontrunner PersephOne, who are the pilots of the new guard of invulnerable hip-hop. The debut music festival at The North Door (502 Brushy Street in Austin) is built around the Texas-centric powerhouse The Young Mothers, which will perform nightly as a group. Each member of the six-piece ensemble will also present his respective solo project as well as collaborate with the nation’s top-flight improv musicians, such as Alvin Fielder, a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM); Avreeayl Ra, a longstanding member of the AACM; Nick Mazzarella, a saxophonist who’s in the Chicago Reed Quartet with Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams, and Dave Rempis; Damon Smith, a Houston-based double bassist who has played with Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen, and John Tchicai; and David Dove, a highly-regarded trombonist and founder of Nameless Sound in Houston. The Young Mothers is the brain child of Austin-based Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, a Norwegian-born double bassist who constantly burns down stages in the States and around the globe with celebrated jazz outfits like The Thing and Atomic. The six-piece juggernaut presents jack-out-of-the-box surprises ranging from spirited and moody takes on modern jazz and improv to grindcore and hip-hop side trips. The band has gained solid recognition in the U.S. and Europe through several tours and festival appearances as well as via its critically acclaimed debut album A Mothers Work is Never Done, which came out on Håker Flaten’s own imprint Tektite Records in March 2014. One onlooker, via a blog post during their album release at South by Southwest, wrote, “These cats from Austin sound like a Saharan metal band with jazz instruments.” Along with Sonic Transmissions artistic director Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, The Young Mothers features: - Austin-based guitarist Jonathan Horne, a member of the Steve Albini-engineered Plutonium Farmers, and Bop English, the side project of White Denim frontman James Petralli. - Saxophonist Jason Jackson, a centerpiece of Houston’s productive improvised music community who has played with Leroy Jenkins, Pauline Oliveros, and William Parker. - Trumpeter and rapper Jawwaad Taylor, a member of the bow-down-worthy Shape of Broad Minds, and a Houston native who recently relocated from New York City to his hometown, but not before performing and collaborating with Jay-Z and MF DOOM. - Dallas-based drummer/vibe man Stefan Gonzalez, son of jazz heavyweight Dennis Gonzales, whose powerful chops can be heard in countless jazz, noise, mariachi and grind projects. - Frank Rosaly, a Chicago-stationed percussionist who has played nationally and internationally with the integrals, such as Peter Brötzmann, Jeff Parker, Roscoe Mitchell and Thurston Moore. The festival is supported by Epistrophy Arts, Astral Spirits, and the City of Austin through the Economic Development Department/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. Bobby Bradford 4 in Austin https://www.artful.ly/store/events/2831 Epistrophy Arts presents: Bobby Bradford 4 Austin’s Historic Victory Grill Sunday, March 23 doors 7:30PM, music 8:00 $13 advance tickets available at $15 door (512)517-2248 epistrophyarts@gmail.com epistrophyarts.tumblr.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/epistrophyarts/ Bobby Bradford (Los Angeles): trumpet, cornette Frode Gjerstad (Norway): saxophone, clarinet Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten (Austin): bass Frank Rosaly (Chicago): drums Texan free jazz legend with Austin roots, and a heavy-hitting international and intergenerational ensemble in a special concert at Austin’s historic home of jazz and blues The Victory Grill. Trumpeter/cornettist Bobby Bradford is great Texan musicians who helped fellow Texan Ornette Coleman radically redefine and transform jazz in the early 1960s. Bradford’s original music builds from a tradition that spans the broad range of jazz. His spiraling free-bop energy, warm tonal spectrum, lyricism and far-out explorations has been featured in collaborations with a wide range and number of significant figures such as John Carter, David Murray, Charlie Haden, Eric Dolphy, Nels Cline and many more. Bradford lived in Austin and graduated from Huston Tillotson University. He has been in Los Angeles since the 1960’s, where he has served on the faculty of Pasadena City College and Pomona College. Bobby Bradford was playing with British drummer John Stevens (another one of the music’s significant restructuralists) in the 1980’s when he first collaborated with Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. Gjerstad is not only a great saxophonist and clarinetist; he is also a mentor to a new generation of Norwegian musicians who would develop an edgier avant-garde jazz, separate from Jan Garbarek’s “Nordic School”. Gjerstad’s collaborators reflect the quality and range of his output. Significant partnerships have been with the likes of William Parker, Johnny Dyani, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, and even noise musicians like Lasse Marhaug. The American and Norwegian veterans will be backed by two of the music’s most in-demand rhythm players of the current generation. Drummer Frank Rosaly is an integral presence in Chicago, intersecting the jazz, rock, improvisation, and experimental music communities. Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten. The passionate and expressive Norwegian bass player (who moved to Austin several years ago) provides the intensive and solid foundation for the trio The Thing. Ingebrigt is part of numerous projects both locally and internationally. These groups include, Scorch Trio, Atomic, and locally, The Young Mothers and Plutonium Farmers. more info http://frodegjerstad.com/ This project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. Epistrophy Arts in association with Pushermania presents Kahil El Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble with Ernest Khabeer Dawkins and the legendary Hamiet Bluiett Wednesday February 19, 2014 8pm at The North Door 502 Brushy St. Austin, TX, 78702 (map) $16 General, $20 door tickets https://www.artful.ly/store/events/2359 Kahil El Zabar (Chicago) - drums, percussion, kalimba, voice Ernest Khabeer Dawkins (Chicago) - reeds Hamiet Bluiett (NYC) - baritone saxophone, clarinet epistrophyarts.tumblr.com http://pushermania.com/ Epistrophy Arts in association with Pushermania are proud welcome the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble to Austin for its 40th anniversary celebration tour in support of their new CD release Black is Back. Kahil El'Zabar led the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble’s first performance at Child City Arts Center in Chicago in 1973, one year after he had returned from his studies at the University of Ghana. His goal was to combine concepts of African American music making with the earlier roots of traditional African music to produce something new. In his own words: "The spirit of one's approach comes first before the technical. All the facility in the world with nothing that comes from the heart doesn't make good music. The basis of the strength of any artistic evolution has come from ethnicity." After 40 years, this legendary band is still serving the people worldwide with their special brand of 21st century Griot music. The group features Ernest Dawkins of the New Horizons Ensemble, and special guest, the legendary Hamiet Bluiett, considered to be one of the most important baritone saxophonist in jazz today. The trio's "harmonically provocative and rhythmically seductive" (Chicago Tribune) performances impart an ancestral wisdom that conjures an energy rarely encountered in contemporary music. bios Kahil El'Zabar (b.1953) is one of Chicago's jazz treasures. He joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the early 1970s, and became its chairman in 1975. He regularly records for Chicago's Delmark Records and, during the 1970s, he formed the acclaimed ensembles Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, both of which remain active today. El'Zabar has performed alongside a myriad of jazz greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp and Dizzy Gillespie, but also in the bands of Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone. Ernest Dawkins (b.1953) is one of Chicago's premier jazz saxophonists whose music reflects his extraordinary talent not just as a musician but a composer as well. He has recorded eleven CD's and is the founder and leader of his own group, New Horizons Ensemble. Dawkins has worked with a myriad of music greats which include: Ramsey Lewis, Muhal Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, Edward Wilkerson, Jr., Henry Threadgill, Amina Claudine Myers, Anthony Braxton, Jack McDuff, Don Moye, Jerry Butler, and The Dells. As a world renowned musician, Dawkins has performed in Maputo Mozambique and appeared on local radio and television programs as well as workshops there. He's performed with Zina Nggawana in Pretoria and at the Hugh Masekela Club J&B in Johnanesburg both in South Africa. He is also working as a consultant to The Jazz Club De Maputo in Mozambique. Hamiet Bluiett (b. 1940) combines a blunt, modestly inflected attack with a fleet, aggressive technique, and a uniform hugeness of sound that extends from his horn's lowest reaches to far beyond what is usually its highest register. In St. Louis in the 1960s, Bluiett co-founded the Black Artists' Group (BAG), an artist collective not unlike Chicago's AACM. And, in 1969, he moved to New York City to join the Charles Mingus Quintet and the Sam Rivers Large Ensemble. In 1976 he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet (along with two other Black Artists' Group members, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake), which soon became jazz music's most renowned saxophone quartet. Over the years, Bluiett has also worked with Babatunde Olatunji, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye. http://ernestdawkins.com/ http://www.kahilelzabar.net/ http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=1866 up next: Bobby Bradford 4 @ Victory Grill March 23 http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD24/PoD24BobbyBradford.html Ballister @ Victory Grill April 5 http://daverempis.com/ballister/ This project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. Fred Frith (England / Bay Area) Fred Frith, composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist, has situated himself for more than thirty years in the area where rock music and new music meet. Co-founder of the British underground band Henry Cow (1968-78), he moved to New York in the late seventies and came into contact with many of the musicians with whom he's since been associated, including, for example, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, and Bob Ostertag. Fourteen years in New York gave rise to groups like Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher), Skeleton Crew (with Tom and Zeena), and Keep the Dog, a sextet performing an extensive repertoire of Fred's compositions. In the eighties Fred began to write for dance, film, and theatre, and this in turn has led to his composing for Rova Sax Quartet, Ensemble Modern, Arditti Quartet, Asko Ensemble, and many other groups, including his own critically acclaimed Guitar Quartet. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, Fred has also performed in a variety of other contexts, playing bass in John Zorn's Naked City, violin in Lars Hollmer's Looping Home Orchestra, and guitar on recordings ranging from The Residents and René Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio. Fred is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels' award-winning documentary film Step Across the Border. He is currently Professor of Composition at Mills College in Oakland, California. In addition to the performance, Mr. Frith will perform at a local elementary school. http://www.fredfrith.com/ "A masterful sound colorist, Frith is in no way subject to analyses of his artistic legitimacy - (he) redefines the possible uses of the guitar and makes traditional discourse irrelevant". Epistrophy Arts is proud to present the last event of our 2013 season. Please join us for a special concert with the electro-acoustic free improvisation trio Konk Pack at the Museum of Human Achievement. KONK PACK Tim Hodgkinson (lap steel guitar, electronics, clarinets) Thomas Lehn (analogue synthesizer) Roger Turner (drumsets and percussion) Wednesday October 16 doors 8PM, music 8:30PM Museum of Human Achievement (map) advance tickets $13, $15 @ door tickets available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/485761 “Konk Pack are utterly awesome. Featuring Thomas Lehn on the craziest old EMS synthi A, Tim Hodgkinson on flat guitar and Roger Turner on percussion, the show is awkwardly brilliant and defiant. With startling combinations of punkish nuisance, ingenious change-ups, and rolling, stumbling, tripping and flipping sound inventions, Konk Pack are one of the most exciting Improv groups in the world.” The Wire http://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/dec/19/konk-pack-review KONK PACK brings together three major figures in contemporary music. For over 10 years the group has amazed audiences at festivals and concerts all over the world with the sheer energy of its rapid-fire interplay, earning numerous critical accolades. Since 1997, Konk Pack have toured regularly throughout Europe, completed three major tours of the US, and have been described by The Wire magazine's Lee Henderson as "one of the most exciting improv groups in the world." The group has released four compact discs on the German label GROB, and performed at major music festivals from Vancouver to Belgrade. TIM HODGKINSON is well-known among North American and European avant-garde audiences as a founding member of the legendary and radical art rock band Henry Cow, with whom he played for a decade. Tim Hodgkinson's musical output is marked by versatility, creativity, and an intense work ethic. His 30 year career has encompassed avant-prog, electro-acoustic improvisation, contemporary classical composition, and even abrasive post-punk. THOMAS LEHN Schooled both as a concert pianist playing contemporary repertoire and as a recording technician, Thomas Lehn deploys a huge musicality through his unique chosen outlet the analogue synthesizer. This instrument allows him extremely close and immediate contact with all aspects of sound modification - a vast gamut of living electronic sound produced with unmatched speed and fluency. Thomas Lehn simply represents a coming-of-age of electronic sound production in the domain of concert performance that sets a standard for the entire medium. He is therefore unsurprisingly an essential member of many of the most active and significant projects in this highly international and dynamic scene. ROGER TURNER Over decades Roger Turner has brought the renowned volcanic power and finely honed precision of his drum work to ensembles that have often forged real connections with musicians both sides of the Atlantic. In addition he has worked extensively in the microscopic laboratory of the acoustic duo situation where he acquired a highly developed sense of detail and of dynamic control. One of that select group of world-class players who have collectively redefined the language of contemporary percussion. In Turner's hands minute inflections of tension can shape the group's musical direction and galvanize a new level of audience experience. about Epistrophy Arts: Epistrophy Arts is a grass-roots cultural organization dedicated to presenting the finest in adventurous and improvised music in Austin Texas. Epistrophy Arts Presents, Peter Brötzmann / Jason Adasiewicz Duo Friday, Sept. 21. 11:00 PM (doors 10:30) special guest performace to follow duo 29th Street Ballroom 2906 Fruth St. Austin, Texas map 16 advance tickets available at Brown Paper Tickets Peter Brötzmann - reeds Jason Adasiewicz - vibraphone Last week's NYT review of duo’s NYC performance recent press 1 2 A not to be missed concert by German saxophone ‘firebrand' Peter Brötzmann and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz. The duo brings together a wealth of knowledge to create a dynamic yet sensitive exploration of improvisational jazz. Voted one of the best concerts of 2011 by the New York Times. He has been changing people’s minds about music for almost half a century. German free jazz artist and Austin favorite Peter Brötzmann returns to town with a new exciting project with celebrated Chicago vibraphonist and Downbeat Critics Poll winner Jason Adasiewicz . Nate Chinen of the NY Times chose the Duo's first North American performance as one of his ten best concerts in any genre of 2011. “Brötzmann has abundant nonstandard technique, but what impresses in his playing isn’t the execution so much as the force of presence,” writes Chinen. “He recently turned 70, and he sounds almost invincible.” The saxophonist is joined by the “deft, dynamic young vibraphonist”, Jason Adasiewicz. With 16 complete solo albums and numerous collaborative recordings and concert tours worldwide for over 40 years, Brötzmann has been described as “a towering presence in European free music since the 1960s” For Peter Brötzmann, 40-plus years of playing improvised music has produced - even just on recorded evidence - a list of associates that include just about all the major figures in creative music: Derek Bailey, Cecil Taylor, Han Bennink, Rashied Ali, Evan Parker, Misha Mengelberg, Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell and Andrew Cyrille. Always characterized as an energy player - and the power-rock setting of Last Exit with Ronald Shannon Jackson, Sonny Sharock and Bill Laswell, did little to disperse this conviction - his sound is one of the most distinctive, life-affirming and joyous in all music. “The huge, screaming sound he makes is among the most exhilarating things in the music,” says Brian Morton, “and while he has often been typecast as a kind of sonic terrorist, that does insufficient justice to his mastery of the entire reed family.” Born in Remscheid, Germany on 6 March 1941, Brötzmann's early interest was in painting and he attended the art academy in Wuppertal and participated in the Fluxus movement. Soon thereafter, his main occupation became music (though he continues to create visual art.) Self-taught on clarinets, he soon moved to saxophones and began playing swing and bebop. Associations with bassist Peter Kowald, Don Cherry, Alex von Schlippenbach and Steve Lacy during the 1960s brought a new freedom to Brötzmann’s approach. He continues to tour and record widely with Die Like a Dog (Hamid Drake, William Parker and Toshinori Kondo), the Chicago Tentet, and a variety of duo projects. Jason Adasiewicz (pronounced “Ad-a-SHEVE-its) is a vibraphonist, drummer, and composer, and an integral member of Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scene. His aggressive yet lyrical style can be heard in over 10 working Chicago groups, including those led by Rob Mazurek, Nicole Mitchell, Mike Reed, Josh Berman, and Ken Vandermark. Adasiewicz won the 2011 Downbeat Annual Critic’s Poll in the Rising Star Vibes category, and for the last two years has been nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as a finalist for ‘Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year’. His quintet Rolldown, and his trio Sun Rooms have each release two recordings. Sun Rooms received top jazz releases of 2010 honors in the New York Times, The Village Voice, The Chicago Tribune, Dusted Magazine and The Chicago Reader. “Jason Adasiewicz’s vibes shimmer in the ether,” writes trumpeter Rob Mazurek, “A true original with a deep sensibility for sound vibration that can be heard through his innate and idiosyncratic approach to harmony and melody. Jason’s musical history is spiked with fervent free improvisation and tight melodic rendering.” “A more accommodating rapport emerged in the second set, featuring Mr. Brötzmann with the versatile young vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz. Beginning in anxious clangor — alto saxophone blare, wood mallets jack-hammered sideways along the metal bars — their duologue gradually softened and ripened, occasionally flirting with outright beauty. Mr. Adasiewicz was the agent of that flirtation, but his approach was hardly typical. At one point he created a glowing drone from the vibraphone with two violin bows, clutching them like ski poles. Mr. Brötzmann responded with a stretch of unusually songlike playing, one long tone after another, before resuming his eruptive norm.” “Brötzmann, the guest of honor at this year’s Vision Festival, played in three separate ensembles, each breathtaking on its own terms. My favorite was this unexpectedly accommodating duo with Adasiewicz, a vibraphonist of exacting tonal effect. A genuine conversation, it covered the full dynamic spectrum, from expectant hush to meteor-hits-the-building.” -Nate Chinen New York Times http://epistrophyarts.tumblr.com/

Through free improvisation, open composition, multi-tracked studio experiments, use of feedback and site specific performances that exploit the acoustic idiosyncrasies of unique environments he has broadened the range of the instrument into previously unheard territories of timbre, polyphony and resonance. Over the last thirty years he has played with AMM, Derek Bailey, Polwechsel, Fred Frith, John Stevens, The Ex, Christian Marclay and hundred more;http://www.johnbutcher.org.uk/ Gino Robair (Bay Area, CA) Improviser, percussionist and composer Gino Robair has performed and recorded with many of the most consistently adventurous musicians working today, including Tom Waits, John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith and Terry Riley. His opera, I, Norton, has been performed throughout North American and Europe; he has composed for the ROVA Saxophone Quartet, gamelan, MTV, Comedy Central and the CBS animated series The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat; and he is one of the ‘twenty five innovative percussionists’ included in the book Percussion Profiles (SoundWorld, 2001). http://www.ginorobair.com/ Thomas Lehn (Koln, Germany) He studied recording engineering and piano at the Music Academy of Detmold, classical piano at the Music Academy of Cologne, and jazz piano with Frank Wunsch and Francis Coppieters. In the 1980s he took part on courses of Studio for pianistic interpretation held by Prof. Jürgen Uhde. Since that time he has been active as a performer of both contemporary music and classical piano repertoire. For the past twenty years, his major and widely known work has been performing and producing live-electronic music. Rooted in the experience of a wide spectrum of musical fields and based on his background as a pianist, he has developed an individual ‘language’ of electronic music. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers from the late 1960s, particularly the EMS Synthi A. The specific character of this modular instrument allows him to spontaneously act and react in close contact with the various structural degrees of the musical process. Lehn has recorded with Marcus Schmickler, Keith Rowe, Phil Minton, Phil Durrant, Radu Malfatti, Axel Dörner, Cor Fuhler,Gerry Hemingway, Andy Moor of The Ex, and is a member of the electronic orchestra M.I.M.E.O. Epistrophy Arts is funded in part by individual contributions and the City of Austin under the auspices of the Arts Commission
