Saw TC tonight at Yoshi's for the 2nd time. The 1st time was "borderline" but tonight was a total waste of my time & money. To be the Grandson of Doc Cheatham and possessor of great skill and ability, he's drenched in Electronics, singing birds, bells, whitles, commentary, pushing-pulling switches. Looked more like and electrician/sound man than a Jazz musician. After sitting still/motionless for 30 minutes, I left. Just my opinion.
  2. Wow, Benny Golson, now Roy Haynes and Lou Donaldson. Is Sonny the only one left?
  3. I recently discovered this guy Kyle Koehler. I first heard him on CD I can't get tired of listening to, "T-Man" by Jason Tieman. None can replace Joey D but there are several very good B-3ers out there but I really dig this guy. I've purchased CD's where he's sideman. Wish I could see him live somewhere
  4. I just discovered this guy watching one of those best of youtube videos. Tell me about Mr. Gilchrist. Getting ready to listen to "Towards The Shinning Path"
  5. During a weeks residency at Yoshi's Oakland with Mike LeDonne, Randy Brecker, Buster Williams,Carl Allen?(treated me like a King) he told me him and my dad Elmon Wright were the best of friends, did everything together, in Earl Bostics band. Said they weren't playing a lot of jazz. Mostly jump tunes. Told me about some of their escapades I can't repeat here. BG was a great story teller with keen wit and great sense of humor. I asked him one time, "Benny, how are you doing" he replied "Jerold I'm barely hanging on, I've got long finger nails" Because of you sir I will forever be "Moanin'" at the "Five Spot After Dark" while "I Remember Clifford" then all of a sudden "Along Came Betty" "Out Of The Past" only to bump into "Killer Joe" & "Reggie of Chester" at the "Blues March" Always "Step Lightly" around "The Stroller"

  7. I recently discovered two young ladies. Lakecia Benjamin and Camile Thurman. What do you think. Benjamin sounds like the second coming of TRANE. Will see Thurman at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland on 10-27
  8. Saw Azar Lawrence at Yoshi's Wed night. Except for one funk oriented song, the show was absolutely fantastic. There was a moment where I closed my eyes and thought I was listening to Trane.............

Bought two of his cd's. Out there on the edge Neo-Bop for sure, but still within the boundaries, barely. So, went to see him at Yoshi's Sunday night 3-4-24. Keeping it brief, I'll say I'd like to see a little more Bop and a little less Neo because he's got amazing chops and inventive ideas. Again, too much electronics, voicings etc. My two cents..........
  10. I'm going to preface my comments by saying I'm 74 yrs old and grew up on Bird, Monk, Trane, Diz, Miles, Dex, Newk, Burrell, Smith, Blakey etc. I've tried to listen to this young fellow (own 5 of his cd's) but, after listenening to sound samples of Owl Song, which all sound alike, I'm almost at the point of saying this is not jazz, starting to sound like sophisticated elevator music to me. Just one opinion

    Samara Joy

I'm just hearing about Samara Joy. A young, serious true to the phrase "jazz singer" Linger Awhile is really nice. Reminds me of Fitzgerald, Vaughan, McRae etc. She was here in June, missed her. What are your thoughts.
  12. My favorite CD of 2022, not even close, Jason Tieman, "T-Man"

    Trane

Thank you all. Sometimes I can't see the trees in my own forrest, the forrest is so large. This tree was already in my forrest, it was right in front of me and I missed it. jdw
