A 2-CD set is slated to be released in the Connoisseur series this October. Does anyone know whether this set will contain any previously unissued tracks?

This weekend I spotted a factory sealed copy of the Complete Bill Evans on Riverside for a great price. Can anyone offer any input as to the sound quality of the lp's in this set? (I have read on this board that the sound quality of Riverside vinyl is variable.) Thanks!!!

There are four ABCKO SACD hybrids: Ain't That Good News Sam Cooke at the Copa Keep Movin' On Portrait of a Legend I recommend that you start off with Portrait of a Legend and then go from there. (Keep Movin' On is a compilation covering Sam Cooke's late career work.)

With all due respect, mate, I think that Guinness is just a tad over-rated (although I realize that you might get better/stronger stuff in Europe). I really enjoy certain British, Irish, and Belgian beers; I am generally not so keen on German and Czech ones. I think that I will open up one of these tonight and let the evening roll onward:

Thanks for the information, Sidewinder.

All right, I am looking at my set as I write and I do not see any signature from "Boxman" anywhere. My bonus disc is also a 45 single, but it only has one track, "Untitled Blues". The flipside of the single has the words, "The Complete Keynote Collection", and the Keynote logo etched into the vinyl. The single is housed in an ordinary looking blue and white sleeve reading, "nippon phonogram". How different is my set from others'? (The music, obviously, is still wonderful, and I would not easily part with this set.)

$100 at Amoeba!!!!! Amazing. They must have mis-counted the number of LPs in the box set. ← Well, they did miscount, but they were only off by one. The sale tag indicated that the set included 20 lp's plus one ep. As you well know, Amoeba tends to ask far too much for most of their Mosaic sets - once in a while, though, you will find a relative bargain. I am surprised that they did not price the Keynote set accordingly. Wolff, thanks for the ebay statistics regarding the Commodore sales. I guess that I was really lucky with the first two sets. I have a feeling that it is going to be some time before I get the opportunity to pick up Vol.3 for a good price.

I agree largely with Dr. J's assessment. I don't know if you can reasonably expect to purchase this set for much less than $10 per lp in the foreseeable future. Of course, a couple of months ago, I was able to purchase a sealed (re-sealed?), brand new copy of the Keynote set at Amoeba Hollywood for $100 - the folks at Amoeba usually do a better job of gauging the value of such sets. There truly is a lot of great music on these lp's. On a related note, has anyone else noticed that, overall, the average ebay selling price for the first two Mosaic Commodore sets seems to have come down dramatically over the last year or so? I have seen a number of these Mosaics end up being sold for around the original list price or lower.

FA: Mosaic Elvin Jones, Stanley Turrentine boxes
Edward replied to robert h.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
Robert, These are the originals with book and box and not "copies" as you not indicates??? m- ← I also want to play it safe and confirm as much considering the word "copy" is subject to more than one interpretation. Thanks! -

Sent a PM regarding the Turrentine set. -
Some of us didn't realize that this poll existed until after the game was over. Had I been asked before the game started who I thought was going to win, I would have said the Spurs; and that is how I voted, albeit belatedly. I also thought, however, that the Pistons could easily have won this game. As others have mentioned, they seemed to be a little out of sync in the 4th quarter (not something that I would have expected from such a well-coached and poised team), and that was their downfall.

I've never seen this particular set go for so much, and there are still four days left in the auction. Moreover, this may be the highest price I've seen paid per Mosaic lp. Mosaic Box

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, this title (along with "Bravo! Brubeck") was on 7-14 day backorder with JRR when I placed a second order yesterday.

Byrd/Adams goes straight to "Last Chance"
Edward replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I always assumed that once the lease expired, they had to stop selling the sets - regardless of what they had in stock. ← I think you're right. ← I suppose that it would depend upon the particular lease agreement, but I don't generally think that this is the case. First, such practice would be extremely wasteful. Second, how does one explain all of the partial sets that Mosaic has sold to its customers over the years after the expiration of various lease agreements? I do think it quite possible, however, that many of the lease agreements contain some sort of clause preventing Mosaic from pressing more than X number of sets just before the lease is set to expire. -

I purchased a second Mobley set earlier this year (as with the Byrd/Adams set, I sold my first Mobley set a few years ago), and the set number is 3211. ← Thanks, Hans. It seems, then, (unless Hans received a low numbered set that had been returned - not likely), that Cuscuna and/or EMI will let the lease on the Mobley set expire when it is determined that the set is no longer sufficiently profitable. That well may be years from now. For those of you who might be waiting for U.S. releases of the individual albums, it is interesting to note that only one of the six albums from the long OOP Lee Morgan 50's set has thus far been reissued in the U.S. It has also occurred to me that the leasing agreement for the Verve Kid Ory set has already expired, but that Mosaic is sitting on a large enough stockpile to satisfy the set's relatively meager annual sales for some time to come. -

Of course, it's not an exact science, but I think that the most important factors in predicting whether a particular set might be going OOP soon are the following: 1) how long the set has been available, 2) the size of the set, and, perhaps most importantly, 3) which label is licensing the set In regard to the last factor, the Woody Shaw (Sony) set was available for quite a long time, and the J.J. Johnson (Sony) set has been available for almost 9 years now. I also think that sets licensed from EMI (Blue Note, Capitol, Pacific Jazz, Roulette, Solid State) are much more likely to receive extended or renewed (i.e., greater than 5 years) licensing agreements; but, then again, the Byrd/Adams set went OOP in just over five years. I would definitely be ready to pull the trigger on any Verve licensed sets that have been out for around five years or more. Accordingly, the sets that I would be most concerned about purchasing in the near future are, in no particular order, : 1) Hank Mobley 2) Johnny Hodges 3) Max Roach In regard to the Hank Mobley, I would be very interested to learn the set number received by someone who has recently purchased the set. -
For what it's worth, AMG lists this as a 5-star session. How does this date stack up against Brubeck's other albums from the same period? How is the sound quality of the CD? (I believe that the CD was released in 1989 as part of Columbia's Legacy program.) Thanks!

I received one e-mail today confirming shipment of 7 CD's (5 Verve LPR's and 2 Howard Rumsey OJC's), and another announcing the cancellation of the remainder of my order (5 OJC's - 4 of them highly recommended by fellow board members). I wish that I had ordered the Al Cohn and the Yusef Lateef LPR's.

My set was actually numbered 3066. Unfortunately, I won't have time to properly listen to it until this weekend. -

Sounds like the license is expiring significantly short of the 5000 limit. ← Anyone remember when it first went on sale? Since they're talking about the number they havae left, it could be that they don't "press" ("burn"?"print"?) 5000 copies at once and if they're getting low just before their license expires they don't bother to manufacture more. Just guessing. ← I believe that the Byrd/Adams set was released at the beginning of 2000, but I'm not sure. I know that Mosaic doesn't press all of the CD's for a particular set in one run; but it does print all of the booklets at once due to cost considerations (i.e., paying for more than one printing pressing would be prohibitive), which is why there are almost always booklets left over once a set goes OOP. If I remember correctly, the set that I ordered last Thursday was numbered in the 3600's. -
I think that the fact of the matter is that JRR probably had light stock on most Fantasy titles and a lot of jazz fans took advantage of its great sale. My still un-shipped order includes 7 OJC's, all of which are now listed as usually shipping within 7-14 days. When I placed my order, only one or two of these titles had this inventory status.

At the very least, the Spurs, Wolves and Lakers (possibly the Kings too) were better than the Pistons last year. Sometimes the best team in the NBA loses due to bad luck (the Spurs against the Lakers last year), and sometimes it's an attitude thing (why the Lakers lost in the finals). Guy ← Agreed. Bad luck, of course, also includes injuries; and, unfortunately, that's just part of the game. The '04 Lakers were not a very deep team, and Karl Malone's injury suffered in the Conference Finals against the Spurs made him quite ineffective against the Pistons. Karl Malone's presence meant a lot to the Lakers, especially on the defensive end; and, yes, the Lakers seemed to implode after they lost him. It's a shame, because it would have been very interesting to watch a full-strength Lakers squad play an excellent Detroit team that was clicking on all cylinders.

As already mentioned by others, it would probably be smart to focus on acquiring the limited edition OJC's before the regular OJC's; but considering alldirect's prices, the regular OJC's presented a far greater bargain. At any rate, I ordered the following for $92.33 delivered: Shorty & Doc - Harold "Shorty" Baker/Doc Cheatham Sweets - Harry "Sweets" Edison Together Again - Teddy Edwards/Howard McGhee Sittin' In - Gillespie/Getz/Hawkins Snap Your Fingers - Al Grey The Green Leaves Of Summer - Hampton Hawes Plays Gerry Mulligan Arrangements - Gene Krupa Maggie's Back In Town - Howard McGhee Joe Newman Quintet at Count Basie's In The Solo Spotlight - Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Volume 6 - Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Blue Stompin' - Hal Singer/Charlie Shavers

Combined Record of Western Conference Teams: 646-584 Combined Record of Eastern Conference Teams: 584-646 Regular Season Records Against Opposing Conference's Playoff Teams Dallas Mavericks: 12-4 Phoenix Suns: 11-5 San Antonio Spurs: 10-6 Detroit Pistons: 8-8 Miami Heat: 7-9 Indiana Pacers: 6-10 The Pacer's regular season record would have been good for 9th place in the Western Conference. Obviously, Indiana's record would most likely have been better without all of those suspensions that were incurred early on.
