A lovely birthday appreciation. That's the best gift we can give each other. Happy Birthday!

I'm hesitant to bump old threads but, on an Air search, I came across this AOW discussion. Post #73 (along with other posts here) is invaluable and provides many insights as I relisten to Air Time.

Roscoe Mitchell's S II Examples from the recording with The Maze and L-R-G (Nessa). I could not "get" SII Examples on multiple listens then, for whatever reason, I suddenly got it and was amazed.

WTF? Some really disturbing toys

That reminds me of the first generation of this type of thing.........bag o broken glass, Teddy Chainsaw Bear, etc from Saturday Night Live. -
Capitol Jazz arrived well packaged, complete and in excellent condition. Thanks James.

That's what makes music listening, jazz in particular, such an adventure to me. At any given time views can change completely from what they had been about an album, a musician or a musical style or period. That's why it's a fun challenge for me to trust my own listening (difficult at times) and my own tastes without being swayed by overly negative opinions or sentiment that is expressed at any one time. Not to be misunderstood, I highly value guidance and recommendations from others who have a different frame of reference or have much more experience whether playing, listening and/or producing. But whether I "get something" now, later or never doesn't really matter. It's the effort that's the most rewarding.

I don't comment every time I listen to a recommended track. But I listened to this from the JSP box and, you're absolutely right Paul. Astounding.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
TedR replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Thanks for the tour schedule Chuck. I see that Steve Swell is joining the trio. I'll make a point of seeing them here in Cleveland (Lakewood, Ohio actually) on Tuesday night. Edited to say I just read Jeff's summary that mentions Steve Swell. Looking forward to the concert. -
Like many here have said, this place costs me too much money :-). I just ordered the Bernstein Symphonies Edition for $89.34 including shipping from Amazon.uk. Amazon.it was $94 and change after currency exchange. Either way, cheaper than Amazon.com so I went for it, pushed by Daniel's post that it may be out of print.

Browns just killed the Bengals tonight though the Bengals hurt themselves the whole game. Still, the Brownies running game was back, the quarterback looked sharp for all four quarters and they took advantage of opportunities the defense gave them.
-
After the first half, the Browns are just not convincing. 17 yards rushing the first half?!! It's going to be another long season.
-
I sure hope not SS. Brown's quarterback Brian H's dad was my college roommate for two years and fraternity brother. I've followed Brian's career since high school and have never been more nervous watching him play than now (especially after Jacksonville). The NFL is brutal and criticism is part of that but I can't be objective. I'll remain a fan and supporter no matter what.
-
Ha ha! He was the ultimate bully when I was growing up. Anyone that criticized his singing was going to get pummeled. Was that scowl natural to him or worked on with help of directors?
-
That is terrible news to hear. I am so sorry for what he went through and the loss to his family, friends and this message board.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

I definitely wasn't thinking when posting the question. Thanks. -

Not surprising considering the unfortunate circumstances. I'm not aware of this. What were the unfortunate circumstances? -
I do admire your daughter's work on all your reissues I have, with Saga of the Outlaws being a particular favorite.

In today's paper, the quote from Goodell is "We assumed that there was a video. We asked for a video. But we were never granted that opportunity". But "a law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then fiancé to an NFL executive five months ago while league officials have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week." The article goes on to say "Also a voicemail from an NFL office number confirmed they received the video."

The OP says he's sharing"a couple of Jazz related art projects". These are two different projects. Thanks. I see that now. I'm tempted to edit out my post for being so dumb but I'll let it stand since, the main thing is, they are cool projects. (Of course editing would do no good since it would be seen in your post anyway. :-))

That looks very very cool. I'm puzzled, though, how the close ups of the precut wood look faded while the finished "JAZZ" looks so bright and sharp.

These concert schedules look grueling. How can anyone expect these musicians to play well each night when they have to crisscross the country 6 to 7 consecutive days/nights in a row. Seems too mentally and physically taxing to maintain the standards a musician would hope to achieve.

I enjoy learning and having my ears opened (which I mainly credit this jazz forum for helping me do that) but if I put Mom's demands on myself, my enjoyment of music would turn into a chore. And as far as the giant boxes, I'll use the Rubenstein box as one example: When I read here how much Larry or Ubu loves a Rubenstein version of a Mozart concerto, I can leaf through the box and pick out that specific recording. If I didn't have the box I would not have that luxury. To me the boxes are a like a reference book. I don't read reference books cover to cover but as information or opinions present themselves, I can read (or in the case of cd box sets, listen to) that subject of interest.
