  1. Louis Armstrong All Stars set, disc 8 Newport '56. And all because my wife asked if I would put on some Louis this morning. That was fun (that she asked to hear some Pops). And now disc 6 of the Johnny Hodges set which she also likes a lot (and for which I credit her for us having. :-))
  2. Compared to most everyone here I have been a late bloomer with what I've listened to for the first time (buying and listening to the great series of Nessa recordings for the first time starting just two years ago for example). So, also for the first time, I am really enjoying the Mosaic Small Group Johnny Hodges 1956 - 61. Disc 3 right now.
  3. I'd like permission to replace "Watch Antiques Road Show" with "Watch American Pickers" then I'll add it up. I've learned a lot more watching American Pickers. :-))
  4. As a dog lover this is one of the most difficult experiences to go through. They are our innocent family members and the void they leave can be unbearable. If it is not too presumptuous to say, based on those pictures, I love Coltrane and I am so sorry you, your wife and Gracie have to go through this. It's heartbreaking.
  5. I went along with my wife to do a few errands yesterday afternoon. While she went into Target I decided to go into a store that has mostly used DVDs but has a small section of CDs. Usually I never find anything of interest to me. In one of their glass cabinets was The complete Verve Johnny Hodges small group sessions Mosaic for $49.99! Used but very good condition. Anyway I'm listening to disc 1 now. It's wonderful. You just never know.....
  6. It's the second disc of the 3 disc cases that are so difficult to get out without fear of cracking them (even with the "lift and twist"). In the Louis Armstrong All stars set I thought that I may never be able to play the middle discs because it took so long to detach them. I might choose 3 discs (with the interviews for example) that I may be less likely to listen to again and switch them to the middle hubs. Unfortunately I may not consider any more 9cd sets for this reason.
  7. That's one nearly perfect alignment, seeing the 500th HR on your 50th. Historic! Happy Birthday.
  8. Woody Herman Orchestra Columbia recordings. "Ah your fathers mustache".......the alternates are fun to listen to since I can imagine, in concert, repeating this tune with "and one more time!" High school and college jazz bands should have an arrangement of this. Edited to say from disc 2 of the Mosaic set
  9. Would love to read comments about the various concerts. It kills me not to be there to hear the AACM group. Any chance for a live recording?
  10. Tenderly, dIsc 6 (Chicago concert) from Louis Armstrong All Stars Mosaic. Billy Kyle does "play so sexy". (Quote from Velma Middleton, and I have to agree. :-))
  11. Ballad of Davey Crockett. He repaired the crack in the Liberty Bell. I forgot about that.
  12. I'm excited to know that the Tomeka Reid Quartet with Mary Halvorson are playing in Cleveland (at Mahall's, the same place where Frode Gjerstad and Bobby Bradford played last winter) on Friday, August 28th, 9:00 PM. Also Ken Vandermark/Paal Nilssen-Love Duo, Oblique Orchestra are playing on September 2 at the Beachland Ballroom. It seems like there are a few more venues opening up throughout the Cleveland area making it a convenient place to play when groups travel from Chicago to the East Coast. Good to see.
  13. I have little knowledge of hardware beyond auditioning and choosing audio components. When I read about components meant to create "distortion" the first thing I think about is that the musical instrument is the first and most important part of the chain. The embouchere, the reed, the mouthpiece, type of strings, the shape and type of instrument, etc all create "distortion" for the purpose of developing an individual sound. All I want from my sound system is to create as accurate a representation as possible of those musicians without having to compensate too much for how recording technology may or may not change the original sound. Difficult to achieve when even live performance can be dependent on microphones, speakers and room acoustics.
  14. Thanks Jeff. Because of your post I started reading a bit of Gennett history and tried (unsuccessfully) to find a picture of the outside of the studio. It was described as a wooden shed with no ventilation built between the manufacturing plant (your pic) and the train tracks. A number of pics from inside the studio room, one of the most famous being with The Wolverines. On the "riverwalkjazz.stanford.edu" website I found this and wondered if you saw it: "The Starr-Gennett Foundation unveiled a permanent Starr-Gennett themed attraction in Richmond in 2007. The Gennett Walk Of Fame is located at the site of the Starr Piano Company and is a series of cast-bronze markers in the form of 78 rpm phonograph records embedded in the Whitewater Gorge Trail."
  15. I'm bumping up this thread after listening to a wonderfully musical Sid Catlett solo on the Louis Armstrong All Stars Live Mosaic......Disc 2, the 1947 Carnegie Hall concert. "Steak Face"(?) was the name of the cut I believe. Thought others might appreciate revisiting this video.
  16. Yeah, thanks. Not quite the same as hunting through the racks at a favorite record store and finding something unexpected. But it's close.
  17. I was doing searches on various topics and came across numerous posts in 2003 and 2004 advising to buy the Mobley next because it would surely be sold out soon. Here we are almost 12 years later and the Mobley is still available with numerous sets sold out that came out after the Mobley with no sign that it is close to being listed as "running low". Why is this not selling?
  18. Coincidentally I was browsing around Amazon while watching baseball tonight and came across an Amazon seller who was selling the Mosaic Complete CBS Buck Clayton Jam Sessions for $79.99 plus shipping which was almost half of the next seller's price. They say "like new" (2 jewel cases still sealed) condition including box ("very good") so I'll find out soon enough. Hopefully not too good to be true because I regretted not getting this when it was available.
  19. The Live Recordings of Louis Armstrong and the All Stars. Disc 1, Town Hall concert. "Pennies from Heaven". Wow. "Back O Town Blues"...... Some excellent cornet (or maybe trumpet) playing by Bobby Hackett behind Louis' wonderful singing. Haven't heard much comment on Bobby Hackett's great playing on these sides.
  20. jazzbo and Louis Armstrong share the same birthday! I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I didn't pick up on it. That's something. I'm celebrating both birthdays this morning by listening to the Town Hall '47 concerts from the Mosaic box. Happy Birthday!
  21. Cleveland, Ohio's Ernie Krivda
  22. Another Ricky comes to mind, Ricky Ford. Thanks for mentioning Rickey Woodard. Just put on his early live recording, Tokyo Express (Candid) which I haven't listened to for years.
  23. Carol Britto. I only have one recording of hers (with Flip Philps) but it's a beauty.
  24. PM on the Rich (if not already sold). The Basie arrived Monday well packaged and in great shape. Just started listening this morning.
  25. I'll go with the Basie Clef/Verve. Sent a PM. Also just sent payment via PayPal. Thanks Pete.
