  1. FWIW, it's even rated! Maybe the guy planned it all along - the 'horrendous' singing and actions. He knew he couldn't compete with the rest, so he'd play it on his own terms. So far, it's worked! Now gotta go listen to some 'rough jazz' ala Kid Thomas to get rid of that rendition of 'she bangs' from the brain.
  2. Barry Manilow night this week ?!@# Bring back Sir Elton.
  3. Buddy Bolden ...if only he had recorded just a handful Joe King Oliver Booker Little Another vote for Clifford Brown. One could always turn to the unofficial Philology series I suppose.
  4. May be a moot point for some. One thing Mosaic booklets lack is a page or 2 dedicated to original album or record cover art. The Selects rectify this, to an extent.
  5. I have all of early Manone on the Collector's Classics label. There is plenty of excellent music played by a long list of top musicians associated with the 'trad-jazz' idiom. The sound quality is quite good for recordings of the era and should be even better on the Mosaic discs (as confirmed by jazzbo). Can't speak for the Louis Prima since I don't have any of his recordings. Based on the Manone material alone, it's a very worthy addition to a jazz collection and I'm sure looking forward to getting the set, even though there'll be many duplicates.
  6. Thanks for the info. alejo.
  7. I never heard any of this music before. Wonder if this box makes a good introduction?
  8. Is this also true for CDs? Thanks.
  9. I woulda thought Deep Purple's "Highway Star" or "Speed King" or Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" would have done the trick, or any of that headbanging Metal music.
  10. I'm dead wrong on the JJ set. According to Mosaic, it'll still be around (barring a sudden surge of sales) at least into a good part of 2005. B)
  11. Oh my poor little purse ... thanks for reminding me about this! Thanks EKE for covering. I'll admit though that the JJ comment was pure speculation. But since it's the oldest in-print CD set on the Mosaic list, it must surely time out very soon. It'd be great of course if it stays around for a while longer so more folks can discover the excellent music on this set.
  12. And one wouldn't be able to get music of some pre-bop artists (Mildred Bailey, Django, Bix/Tram/Teagarden, Berigan etc) elsewhere in better sound and with such comprehensive or complete selections. In this respect, even classic jazz reissue specialists (JSP, Jazz Oracle) couldn't compete in terms of sound quality since they don't get access to the masters. I've also been introduced to countless Blue Note gems by the likes of Curtis Fuller, Sam Rivers and Thad Jones via Mosaic sets - music which I otherwise would never have thought of exploring either due to unavailability or excessive cost of just one album (i.e. Japanese Blue Note reissues). If I had to buy items from only ONE music label, it would be Mosaic.
  13. Ditto that. Darn just saw that "The Complete Red Heads" post.
  14. You could also get discounts on several Mosaic box sets namely the Gene Krupa/Harry James and Four Freshmen sets (about $97 and $127 respectively). There's also the Stan Kenton Capitol Studio Mosaic LP set on sale here. I'm not sure though if these are part of the numbered limited editions, will find out shortly. Nice way to get some Mosaics at a discount.
  15. Another 6 games (or is it 7?) to go for Arsenal to get a perfect season without loss and thus make it impossible for any team to ever beat that record in future. Oh and spare a thought for the long suffering Liverpool FC fan. This has got to rank as one of the worst seasons in the last 15 years. Houllier has done a decent job but not enough to challenge the best, or the average by the way things are going. Bring in Dalglish or someone else before the rot gets permanent!
  16. Hollywood theme this week. Maybe John Stevens will do "Singing in the Rain".
  17. As mentioned above, Cab was mainly an entertainer and band leader but did he get some excellent musicians/band to back him up! As a result he recorded some excellent music, although the vocals are not really up my alley but acceptable. A good one disc sampler would be "Are You Hep to the Jive" on Columbia, that features the late 30s to 40s recordings. Another vote for the JSP sets, convenient and more economical way of getting much of the music. If they can be found, there are the single disc JSP or Masters of Jazz (vol.1) that cover 10 songs and 2 alt. takes of Cab's earliest recordings with the good but little known big band, The Missourians, which he later took over as his backing band.
  18. Helen Humes is One Duke singer I cannot get is Kay Davis, whose opera-style singing doesn't quite fit in with the music, IMO. On Betty Roche, its unfortunate she had few chances to sing with Duke's band (wonder why). The few that she had in the 40s were generally let down by poor choice of songs.
  19. Would like to see as RVG reissues: Louis Smith - Here Comes Louis Smith, Smithville Freddie Redd - Shades of Redd, Music From the Connection Kenny Dorham - Afro-Cuban Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack

    ELO?

Went through an ELO phase for a while but don't listen anymore now. I still think they have 2-3 good songs on each of their albums up to the early 80s. Also, kind of like the Xanadu movie soundtrack, which has some nice Olivia Newton John vocals.
  21. Better get them T/K/M and Atlantic sets now and save up cash for the Morgan/Shorter and Kelly/Chambers sets (and possibly JJ set), which will be on the running low list very soon. (Smiley courtesy of another BB member)
  22. Well thanks y'all for the suggestions. Some methods described should be worth exploring, once I get over the current spending binge.
  23. Got that Erskine many many orders ago and about to place yet another order for the Krupa/James Mosaic set selling at a discount.
  24. There. Just placed another order for some Blue Notes in Tower Online's 25% off sale!
  25. Right! Some of us have posted confessions on our CD binges in various (many!) threads, how we're buying far more than we can listen to, how it's 'hurting' our finances or relationship with the spouse, how the discs are taking up too much space at home etc. For the benefit of CD-junkies like myself, can BB members who have kicked the habit suggest some ways to cut down on buying? How do you resist the urge? Do you have a tried and tested strategy to share? Off the top, I can think of some ideas such as... - Cut up the credit cards. - Stop visiting Jazz BBs/Stop surfing the internet. - Avoid bricks & mortar record stores like the plaque. - Meditate or find religion. - Watch plenty of reality TV shows. - Handcuff/tie ourselves to a heavy object everytime there's an urge to buy. - Let the spouse keep a tight lid on the finances.
