  1. Noted. And add: - Lovie Austin - International Sweethearts of Rhythm
  2. Thanks Patricia for that bio. on John R.T. I really admire him for his dedication to and meticulous work on early jazz material. Three cheers (and more) for Mr John R.T Davies!
  3. Pianists all. Lil Harden Armstrong Marian McPartland Carla Bley (for her compositions too)
  4. Never owned one of them 45s but I did test out one of my dad's, I think it was The Shadow's Walk Don't Run. Quite liked this instrumental.
  5. Some 'lovelies' from the 60s: Leapy Lee - Little Arrows Tom Jones - What's New Pussycat, Delilah Donovan - Mellow Yellow

    Ellington Suites

Another favourite is the Liberian Suite. Deep South Suite is a 4-parter rarely performed by the Duke and includes "Happy-Go-Lucky Local", whose riff was later used by Jimmy Forrest in "Night Train". The suite can be found on Classics 1946 (#1015) and disc.1 of Music Masters' Great Chicago Concerts. Here's a link to a website listing the suites and another. Can't vouch for their accuracy though.
  7. Every decade had its share of horrid pop songs and I concur with many of those listed above although I do like Ebony & Ivory. OTOH McCartney's duet with MJ on This Girl Is Mine is . IMO, one of the worst songs ever was from the 50s, sung by Patti Page, How Much is That Doggy in the Window. Can't believe this childish ditty even sold in the multi-millions.

Some favourites: Deep South Suite Far East Suite Black, Brown & Beige (50s Columbia version)
  9. Artie Shaw. I have no sources to confirm this but he may be on records made in the late 20s with Irving Aaronson's Commanders.
  10. Haven't listened to Revolver in a long while too. On CD, Yellow Submarine is song number 6 after Here, There & Everywhere.
  11. Gloria Estefan (& Miami Sound Machine?) night this week. This will be interesting - quite a few of my fav. songs from the 80s. Wonder what Jon Steven's will sing? It'll certainly be a roar if he does Conga.
  12. I've not heard her singing but this Cole Porter album gets a fair number of good reviews. There's also a CD released on the Audiophile label (GHB Jazz), "Echoes of My Life", with the Loonis McGlohan Trio. The recording was made in the late 70s/early 80s. You may want to check these out.
  13. Added a few more Blue Note/EMI releases: Lee Morgan - Last Sessions Freddie Hubbard - Open Sesame Art Blakey & Jazz Messengers - Freedom Rider Ben Webster - The Holland Sessions I grabbed the Morgan album in spite of poor reviews and based on a listen to the first 3 songs, it really does deserve better ratings, IMO. A couple of titles from Jazzology: Eddie Condon - Town Hall Concerts Vol.10 This is Jazz, Historic Broadcasts Vol.1 GHB Jazz Foundation's (of which Jazzology is 1 of 9 labels) catalogue of 500+ 'trad-jazz' titles is mind-boggling to say the least. Lots of good stuff by musicians such as Wild Bill Davison, Art Hodes, Tony Parenti and Kid Thomas to be acquired from them. Not to mention more recently recorded trad-jazz albums.
  14. I haven't heard any of these albums for a good 4 - 5 years now but I'd say I was totally captivated by E.S.P and Nefertiti when I first heard them.
  15. Count me in for that lobby.
  16. Well well well. William Hung's CD is a top 1000 best seller at Tower Online. Ain't that great!
  17. Thanks for all the information. Glad I bought none of the earlier box sets. Now I can indulge.
  18. I recall Thelma doing some numbers on Count Basie's mid-40s radio transcriptions (available on the Hep and Hindsight labels). There's also an album, Herman Chittison with Thelma Carpenter which I'm not sure is still available. There's a list of albums/recordings in which she appears here. Hope that helps.
  19. "Good Night" has to be it - literally puts you to sleep. "What Goes On" is another candidate.
  20. My top 3 in no order would be: 1. I Still Believe - Brenda K. Starr 2. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House 3. Fight Fire with Fire - Metallica (would rank Battery and Damage Inc up here too) This thread brings back all those memories... -_-
  21. Thanks Lonson for the info. Any comments on the Joe Venuti big bands also on JSP? Thanks.
  22. Four Freshmen set selling at discount, about $127, at Tower Online (part of their "Blue Note" sale).
  23. A few more sets to consider: Louis Armstrong - Big Band Recordings 1930-32, 2CD (JRT remaster) Joe King Oliver & His Orchestra - 1929-30, 2CD (JRT remaster) Henry Red Allen & His New York Orchestra - 1929-30, 2CD (JRT remaster) Mills Brothers - 1930s Recordings, 5CD Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five, 5CD Big Joe Turner - 1938 - '52, 5CD Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang - 1920/30s, 2CD (JRT remaster. Not sure if this overlaps material on the Mosaic set and if so I would go for the latter, price notwithstanding) A few more releases I haven't bought such as Django in Rome and the Hoagy box set should be worth exploring. I generally stay away from these sets if the recordings have already released by 'legit' labels such as Mosaic, and I would certainly avoid the outright rip-offs such as the Bunny Berigan set.
  24. Scott of Mosaic has confirmed that the JJ set is 'safe' from the Running Low list at least until well into 2005 (barring a sudden big surge in sales or unforseen licensing issues cropping up). So, no need to hit the panic button just yet.
  25. I'll bet it'll sell more copies than most RVG reissues.
