  2. Indeed, just a more relaxed dynamic than the intensity of the '70s, and no extended kit from Altschul (I always loved those doodads).
  3. I recovered the lost sector from my brain. "By Myself." I'll go my way by myself This is the end of romance... ...No one knows better than I myself I'm by myself, alone. Shorter's rendition was hauntingly beautiful. Spotify link for Stacey Kent version:
  4. Having been at this show and having seen the trio many times in the '70s, I'd say that while this music is great, it's not the definitive document of the working group as is The Quest from the trio's heyday (recorded 1976, released on Red in Italy and Pausa in USA). There's one other recording by this trio, similarly hard to find if not more so, but I'm blanking out on the title. Ah, found it here: http://www.bb10k.com/RIVERS.disc.html Paragon, from 1977. Definitely more obscure than The Quest. Listening to The Quest right now. Exquisite. If you can find a rip on the internets, grab it.

  7. Shipped to the UK, it's over $30. Seems a bit steep considering Chuck is shipping his latest releases for $18. Wait a month or so and I'm guessing it'll be priced on Amazon UK like Threadgill at 13.66 GBP eligible for free shipping. Based on today's exchange rate that would save you about $8.

  12. That's one of his albums from his London period, 1972. I love most of his stuff, but my favorite album of his might be Bicho, from '77 which has a number of songs that have stayed in his repertoire ever since: Odara, Two Nara Fifty Kobo, O Leaozinho, and Tigressa.

  15. I think the best known song from the album is "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven when You Smile)." A great song. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Wilson_Said_%28I%27m_in_Heaven_When_You_Smile%29

  17. Why would almost all of Van Morrison's stuff be in print, but St. Dominic's Preview has been unavailable as long as I've been looking? All of Procol Harum's early stuff is only available on CD in the U.S. as imports, and hence unavailable on streaming services like Rhapsody & Spotify. These are rhetorical questions, but feel free to add your own.
  18. How did I know it would be you who would find this story? Just sayin' I have a Google news alert set up for any article that includes both the word "music" and the phrase "mass murderer."
  19. I suppose there may be other distribution variables that figure into the equation.

  24. One of my biggest regrets is not having met Cage. I published something of his in the "Nothing Issue" of my magazine, and we put on a "Benefit for Nothing" at Symphony Space in 1982. Cage had agreed to open the show with a reading, but a couple of weeks in advance I got a call from Cage telling me that a conflict had come up, a lecture in Toronto, so instead I moved Jon Gibson to the top of the program, and he did a beautiful solo soprano piece. It was some consolation that we did get Oliver Lake & Pheeroan Ak-Laff at the last minute to do a duet.
