  1. Excuse the language, but that's pure bullshit. This is the best the New York Times can do? My impression from listening to the first session on "Holy Ghost" (where Ayler does "Sonnymoon for Two" was that HE COULD play changes, but that he really had other improvsation priorities. Kind of like Cheney and Viet Nam. No really: Ayler could play his ass off and, more importantly, was a true innovator. Why should he restrict himself to playing standards when there were other people playing standards that were more dedicated to that direction. From the beginning, like Ornette, he was more concerned with doing his own thing. I personally think that his best work was with Peacock and Sonny Murray (and Cherry). The later suff is growing on me, though.

    Favorite Solos

Three for starters: Bakida Carroll's solo on the first movement of John Carter's "Castles of Ghana". Tony Williams' solo on "One Finger Snap" from "Empyrean Isles". Henry Threadgill on "Last of the Hipmen" from David Murray's "Home".
  3. Both are wonderful. Get the complete 60's quintet box for the full effect, though.

    Funny Rat

I like this version of the Unit. I especially like the interludes with Ward on flute and Barker on mallets. Given Taylor's long association with Lyons and the extent to which Lyon's became such an important part of the music, it was good to see him come back and strike out in new directions. Actually, it seems like this period was a very rich one for Taylor, with the FMP recordings just ahread in 88 and the Feel trio stuff. I've got this on LP and my only gripe is that Barker's amazing work is a bit under recorded.
  5. Detail Plus - "Way It Goes/Dance Of The Soul" Impetus Records,UK 1988. Bobby Bradford, cornet; Johnny Dyani, bass; Frode Gjerstad,tenor/soprano; John Stevens, drums. Just got this on LP. First off, I love Bradford and seek out anything that he's on. Secondly, I picked up "Loves Dream" recently on Emenem and was really enthused by Stevens. For some reason I never heard him before. A great, versitile and swinging drummer. Dyani sounds great on this as does Gjerstad.
