  1. Late, Wow - extremely well spotted !! I've given my old CD several more spins, put my head to the left speaker and still can't clearly differentiate Hosea on alto. We are talking fairly top end CD player and speakers here, too. Having said that, the ensembles are somewhat 'broader' than would be expected from a quintet session (I'd always put this down to Joe Henderson's excellent harmonic creativity ..) I guess I can put the blame either on my own hearing or (more likely) the lack of definition in the McMaster CD version Time for me to hunt this one down on vinyl and make a plant pot holder from the McMaster ! Nevertheless - great session.. Ever thought of signing up for the Navy as a sonar operator ?
  2. Just had a quick listen to my copy of the original 'Blue Spirits' release, CDP7 46545 2. Joe is indeed on the right channel, very distinctive. Can't pick out any alto on the left but Joe is playing his harmonies on the lead quite high - could be mistaken for an alto. Maybe what is being observed is leakage from the right channel? Sounds like a quintet session on the basis of the original CD (which was a McMaster ).
  3. I saw Teddy live a couple of years ago in NYC (front row again too) in a quartet backed by John Hick's trio and he was absolutely smoking. Very many NYC heads were turned in the club that night and the goods were delivered with aplomb, in particular a stellar performance of his classic 'Sunset Eyes'. The level of performance and drive was such that news of his recent death came as a particular shock for me. I'll certainly pick up this CD when I see a copy ..
  4. Late - welcome to the Board! You are absolutely right re: Rivers being well matched to Hill's music. There is a 'serpentine' quality to River's style - probing, checking all angles, taking left field, 'out but not that far out' - that allows him to exploit the many twists and turns in Hill's compositions.
  5. I can just picture it. 20 years from now 'Van the Man' will make the cut for the latest batch of Conns. Heck, maybe the guys at Stanford will give him his own 'Complete Blue Note Native Irish Recordings of' Mosaic set !!
  6. That should just about cover the Commodores ....
  7. He's also a featured soloist on Thad & Mel' s 'New Life' and 'Live in Munich', both on Horizon. I'll add them to the listening pile ..
  8. With so many good Mosaics around at the moment, this one comes well down the list, just behind the 'Four Freshmen' box .. :rsmile:
  9. For some early Charles Llloyd on video, check out also the BBC 'Jazz 625' performance of the Cannonball Adderley sextet. Lloyd is nicely featured on flute on his own 'Song My Lady Sings'. Worth searching for ! :rsmile:
  10. I prefer the early stuff on Atlantic, particularly the one called 'The Flowering of the Original Charles Llloyd Quartet in Concert' with the period flower-power/afro hair cover design. This was a particularly powerful group, with Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Particular highlights are a storming version of 'Wilpans' (check out Jarrett's solo) and a very nice performance of 'Speak Low'.
  11. Congrats Marcus - now that you have completed the Conn assignment, your next mission (should you choose to accept it) is to compile a full Mosaic library, including the OOPs ! Just kidding, of course ..
  12. The Powell material is also on the Mingus 'Complete Debut Recordings' CD set - and very nicely presented, as are the quintet tracks. I'll try to give the Vogue 'Quintet of the Year' LP a spin today in memory of this event, and maybe delve also into the Hayden book. Interesting picture in the book with Mingus playing the piano after the concert, apparently waiting for payment whilst they were counting the dosh .... potentially menacing if you were the fan counting the proceeds and discovered there was a big shortfall, then having to tell Mingus that this is the case to his face. I bet there weren't many takers for that 'honour' ! It wil be interesting to compare the overdub versions on the Vogue LP with the 'clean' versions on the Debut set !
  13. Just playing a few tracks off this LP behemoth earlier today. Was wondering at the time just how long it would be before OOP. A cracking set, in my opinion. Amazing how Maynard could make a mid-sized band sound much bigger than it really was, basically by crafty arranging tricks. The music I was specifically listening to was the Xmas material and the dance tracks. They were even able to get this unlikely material to swing... B) Oh - the booklet for this one is also a very fine read. Highly recommended for any big band fans who also liked the Basie sets, Thad & Mel and the Gerald Wilson. And $80 sales of the CD version of this set in 2nd hand stores shouldn't be allowed. How come there are none of these stores around when I'm looking?
  14. Anyone know if the Clifford Brown book is worth picking up (and does it add much additional material to what is given in the Mosaic set booklet) ?
  15. If you don't yet have any Bill Evans in your collection Andy, having the 'Complete Riverside' as your intro to this wonderful player is like hitting the jackpot with your first lotto ticket. Enjoy !
  16. Just listened to the programme. Good interview and an excellent selection of music. Andrew picked out the album 'Grass Roots' as being very typical of the feel circa 1968 and influenced by his home surroundings at the time around 106th and Central Park. Lee Morgan and Booker Ervin seem to be particular faves of his (the track 'Venture Inward' was played). Interestingly, he confirmed that one reason for the switch to solo recitals in the 70s was simple 'lack of human resources' who could actually play his music. Special mention of the UK gigs next week as well, including London, Manchester and Bath !
  17. I'd forgotten just how much hair I lost that day responding to this thread !
  18. How about the 2LP mid-70s Blue Note Reissue Series 'Stanley Turrentine' set and the Liberty 'New Time Shuffle'? Not sure if these are on CD but they feature Stanley with a mid-sized group arranged by Duke Pearson. Both are recommended, as is the 'Joy Ride' session with Oliver Nelson.
  19. Great, I was there that night and never expected to hear a recording of the proceedings. Thanks for the tip ! Half of the concert was in duet with Archie Shepp, although the solo recital was to me the highlight. Hill got a very warm ovation after this excellent performance. One of the best jazz concerts in London over the past few years IMO.. The Bath gig should be fantastic !
  20. That's an incredible deal on the Brookmeyer 'Traditionalism Revisited'. I'm tempted but I have the Toshiba LP on order with Mr Tanno
  21. The 'Tribute to Disney' on Leo is totally chaotic music and sound but definitely a hoot. Saw much of this material at a concert by the Arkestra in 1989. One full set was pretty well dedicated to this Disney material. Another set was full of Fletcher Henderson covers. Ra and co. must have played for at least 3 hours that night. Truly amazing stamina !
  22. Wow - have they got a factory turning these out around the clock somewhere in the old GDR?
  23. Some of these 'buy it nows' might be a way for Europeans to save on shipping and tax. Not too much incentive there though for the in-print sets. Now the Johnny Hodges set - that's another matter !
  24. 'The Singles' 2 CD set was my introduction to the Saturn material. This one never fails to make me chuckle, particularly when the Hokanan vocals and 'Unmask the Batman' come on Hearing this set encoraged me to try some of the other Evidence sets such as 'Cosmic Tones..'/'Art Forms..' , 'Atlantis' and 'Strange Strings'. Truly unique - there's nothing on this planet like the music on these disks. Of course my biggest regret was seeing Ra and Co. live (chaotic but memorable) and not heading up to the stage after the gig to buy some of those home-made Saturn disks .. The 'Greatest Hits' compilation is a great place to start and is very listenable. Superb version of 'Round Midnight' from the 50s Chicago band on this one.
  25. Over this weekend have been listening to: - Clifford Brown Mosaic set and 'Memorial Album' (BN) - Tina Brooks 'True Blue' (Conn) - Joe Harriott & John Mayer 'Indo-Jazz Suite' (Columbia) - Jimmy Ponder 'Jump' (Muse) - Art Pepper 'Complete Fantasy Recordings' CD set
