  1. Really? I think I paid about $20-25 for a pretty good copy (of the original stereo, not the mono).
  2. For fans of early 60s Brit jazz hard bop, this one is strongly recommended: Graham Bond (on alto) is on fire and Don Rendell puts in his usual exemplary performance. Cooking rythmn section too. Session is an unusual one - recorded for the US Jazzland label in London. I heard that Bond was making so much vibration tapping his feet during the recording that the engineers had to get him to take his shoes off. Available in the US through the Bards..
  3. A good friend of mine listened to it once, threw it out in disgust and has refused to listen to MW's music ever since ! Can't believe its that bad..
  4. I was in the Bath shop today and noticed the 'Art Wolf' was in there ( ). My job-lot order of Vocalions has been held up slightly owing to the release of the Westbrook so I've added that to the bundle (that'll make 3 of 'Love Songs' including the vinyl ( ) but must have the 'Magic Garden'.
  5. I did get to see him some years ago with that Wallace Roney 'Miles Tribute' band which had Lenny White, Buster Williams and Adam Holzman in the lineup. He spent much of the gig on bass clarinet recreating some of the sounds he got on Bitches Brew. Nothing I have heard live has come as close to effectively re-creating the Bitches Brew soundscape.
  6. Keep it coming, SeeWhyAudio - I am looking at setting up an 'audiophile' LP copying capability and value any suggestions as to how to go about it.
  7. Along with fellow board member jazzscriveyn, I did get a chance to have a brief chat with Mike Westbrook at his concert last night and 'pop the question'. Confirmed that Love Songs 'would be released' by Vocalion but no comment made regarding the release timing. Mike also confirmed that they were working to get a reissue of 'London Bridge Is Broken Down' and he sounded a bit more enthusiastic about that one. Postscript - According to AAJ, as of yesterday the 'Love Songs' is now reissued and available at London HMV.
  8. For 'Art Wolf'. The Exeter gig was well worth catching and the 4-piece unit with Chris Biscoe and Pete Whyman is a good one. That 'Art Wolf' blues theme that keeps recurring throughout the piece is a killer.
  9. Neil Ardley 'Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' (UK Verve stereo)
  10. The Holman and Russo Mosaic set is essentially a 'grab bag' of material from a whole range of Capitol albums spanning 1950 to 1953 (plus some stuff that wasn't issued on Capitol but was put out on Creative World). Very good set IMO, I recommend it.
  11. Buddy Petit Rich Little Cliff Smalls ← Little Richard Richard Carpenter Karen Carpenter
  12. Makes my $65 purchase at Disk Union look pretty good. ← Not to mention the $96 I think I paid when it was on the 'Running Low' list
  13. Here's another one heading for the Outer Limits: Miles Davis V2 10" Mr Turtletrail is on a roll...
  14. Really? I guess I have to make do with my nice King reissue but at £10 I could buy about 100 of them for 1 deepgroove..
  15. John Cameron 'Off Centre' (Deram, mono). With Harold McNair.
  16. Blue Notes on ebay are getting sillier by the day.. Us Three (Millionaire's Edition)
  17. Doug Watkins is another one - again very recognisable, great sense of time and very propulsive style that invariably adds great impetus to any session he was on.
  18. Yes, 'Fickle Sonance' is a beauty. Tommy Turrentine sounds just great on this session. Love the LP cover art too. Currently spinning: 'Bill Russo in London' (UK Columbia Lansdowne, mono). With the London Jazz Orchestra, recorded 1962. Clarke-Boland Big Band 'Handle With Care !' (French Bel-Air pressing. Probably way better than the US Atlantic).
  19. The Lowther is indeed a very fine album. Original LP copies of this one have been treasured by Brit jazz fans for many years and it has become something of a cult album. I like the way it brings in a load of influences, including English folk music and some of the vibe of Miles' very early electric material. The Surman 'Algonquin' is another beauty - great colaboration with the Canadian arranger John Warren and one of Surman's very best IMO. I don't think he ever surpassed this one. There was also a follow up collaboration with John Warren put out fairly recently on ECM. Another option with the Westbrook 'Love Songs' is the Japanese CD issue, which Dusty Groove were selling recently. Don't know if it's still available. Not sure what the situation is with regard to the Vocalion reissue. I'm off to see Westbrook's band tomorrow night and if I get a chance to ask the obvious question (unlikely but you never know) I will do so.
  20. I'm just listening to PC on an original LP of 'AT's Delight'. That sound is instantly recognisable but it's hard to put into words what makes it so distinctive. With PC though his playing has such great timing, swing and clarity that it's always a joy to listen to. Especially the work with Wynton Kelly such as this session.
  21. Just clearing out a load of old paperwork in the study I came across a copy of this Fantasy Catalogue. Never even realised I had it ! Incredible the range of music in there. I've always found Fantasy very helpful in the past (particularly Terry Hinte). Beyond the call of duty in terms of level of help.
  22. My analogue satellite service used to allow me to pick up all the German-language stations and I was always amazed that if I tuned in late at night there would be some great live jazz on there, presented in the professional manner that it deserves. Charlie Mariano used to pop up a lot on these. Now with my so-called improved digital service there are no German/Austrian/Swiss channels and the only jazz is the occasional BBC4 offering ( ).
  23. Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' (BN 47W63d mono, DG side 2). Man, what a great session this is.. Followed by more Jackie - 'A Fickle Sonance' (BN NY USA stereo)
  24. BAS$$%**DS ! I'm trying to save for a holiday here - CUT IT OUT !!!
