  1. You will enjoy it. Some very nice Tubby on it, not to mention choice playing from Ian Hamer. Some of the material is very much in a jazz-rock vein too.
  2. Great news on the Tubby Hayes front. Looks as though Universal UK are going to reissue a whole load of Tubby Hayes Fontanas this fall. Amongst the titles I know about are the following: 'Return Visit' (with Roland Kirk) 'Mexican Green' ( ) '100% Proof' 'Tubbs Tours' not sure about 'Tubbs' but I suspect it might be in there too. Looks like these will be taken from original stereo masters and not (as with the Japanese '100% Proof') from a mono source. My local Jazz dealer showed me the release paperwork from Universal so its happening, brothers ! Standby to standby with your plastic at Dusty Groove.....
  3. Of course! Tony Hall and Alfred Lion probably had a tape exchange going as a by-product of the 'Blues In Trinity' session by Tubbs, recorded under Hall's juristiction in London. Tempo session in disguise !
  4. I wonder if this is the Japanese vinyl issue of this set? Never heard it but my hunch is that it will be good !
  5. He arranged a great trombone-heavy session included in the Anita O'Day Mosaic box too. Wow, ghost - we posted the same info at the same time !
  6. Worth also picking up that Water reissue of 'Say It Loud' from Dusty - a very nice later Donaldson date and the sound is A1 !
  7. I have the original LP and also find it good but 'mixed' but that's great news that it is reissued. Also great to hear that Bob Brookmeyer is getting an advance. I believe the last time it came out on LP was that 'I Love Jazz' series CBS did in the 1980s with the cheapo cover art ( ) and world's thinnest vinyl.
  8. The curse of Chirac strikes again... Seriously though, thats a real shame I hope that good new instruments are found for Ravi for the gig. A friend of mine saw one of the recent UK performances he did along with his daughter and said it was just great.
  9. Hmmm.....strange... It says the high bid is $1.25 and that Big John P. made the bid..
  10. 'Tony Fruscella' (UK London DG original of the Atlantic LP) John Coltrane 'Giant Steps' (UK London DG mono)
  11. Yes, that is an astonishingly beautiful solo. That track (with equally good Norma Winstone vocal) is easily the best thing on the album.
  12. Another (sideman - not leader) recommendation for Alan Skidmore's 'Once Upon A Time' in the recent Dutton Vocalion reissue batch, mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. Superb - one of the strongest of the series IMO. Very fine performance by Kenny Wheeler on this session, with that prime pairing/empathy with John Taylor demonstrated at an early stage. This one is way better than I expected. Occupying that great middle ground between modal/hard bop and free. They just don't make LPs like this anymore !
  13. Kenny Dorham/JR Monterose 'The Jazz Prophets' (UK HMV 10") Terry Smith 'Fall Out' (UK Philips stereo). Incredible and rare session by the UK guitarist from 1969, produced by Scott Walker and with fantastic backing by the Harry South Big Band. Arrangements by Jimmy Deuchar and Harry South.
  14. pssst... There's a nice copy of 'Cleo' up on ebay right now !
  15. Count me in for an 'English Heritage' grant. I need one ! I'll 'Do a Rooster' and probably pass for the next few BFTs, Tooter. I've got a mountain of great new vinyl to work through, not forgetting a couple of behemoth Mosaics and some Dutton Vocalions in the 'pending' pile. Will re-surface sometime next year. It's a good job I don't buy those Lonehill reissues otherwise I would be sunk.
  16. The stuff from the 1980s almost seems to be written with 'airplay potential' in mind. I'm thinking of albums such as 'Night Glo'. First time I heard these records was in Germany, where Ms Bley had quite a strong following at the time. I remember the time Bley & band played the Collegiate Theatre at UCL, London as a free concert, just for the students. The first I heard of it was my next door neighbour of the time raving about how great it was (Valente, Windo, Mantler, Swallow, D Sharpe etc) and commenting that I should have been there.
  17. Count Otto Von Bismarck Admiral Tirpitz Lord Horatio Nelson
  18. Hey, that's more money for the 'Ronnie Ross Rare Vinyl "Keep It In the UK"' fund !
  19. Tubby Hayes Peter Cushing Christopher Lee
  20. Francy Boland - 'The Orchestra - Vol 3. White Heat' (Dutch MPS)
  21. Gary Hart Garry Glitter Michael Jackson ( )
  22. Dexter Gordon 'Dexter Calling' (Liberty stereo) Miles Davis 'Volume 2' (Lexington 10" )
  23. 'Mode For Joe' and 'Our Thing' marginally get my vote, although they are all great (particularly 'Page One' and 'Inner Urge'). 'Mode For Joe' has a great group sound with inspired solos all round - sums up that whole era, really. 'Our Thing' is has the great Henderson/Dorham front line, most ably backed up by Andrew Hill. Hard to chose between all of them, all have their virtues.
