Yes, I remember Big Miller. A hugely popular figure up in Edmonton and very sadly missed when he passed away some years ago. Nice to hear that they put up a statue in his honour. Very much deserved !

The Anita O'Day set has gone straight to 'Last Chance' and very suddenly. Maybe Mosaic have just got a reminder from Universal that this one is about to time out on its 5-year period. The other sets I guess must just have run low on the remaining stock.

Wow - I'm glad I picked up the O'Day set from Scott Wenzel at the LP convention recently. Very strongly recommended, I had no idea that it was in imminent 'threat of extinction.' I'd be interested in hearing about the Kid Ory too. I have the other 2 sets and they are both worth having, espacially the JJ. Don't miss that one..

Just noticed that the blues singer Long John Baldry has died in Vancouver, Canada age 64 of complications from a lung infection. Long John Baldry RIP Sad news, hope he is now in peace.

'Fraid so ! I read the notes in the box set which put down this session as a 'filler' but I have to say that I find the music strangely catchy. Particularly Kirk's tenor solos. The 'Star Trecky' vocal chorus's are an acquired taste though. That bit of film with Stan Tracey and Rahsaan at Ronnie Scotts was - by strange coincidence - broadcast by the BBC last night in the 'Jazz Britannia' repeat. He was on 'full bore' - too bad it was only a very brief snippet.

I've had the Mercury box for 10 or so years now and its been a big favourite that I've dipped into constantly. Being a vinyl fetishist of late I've tried to pick up the Mercury/Limelight LPs when I've seen them and have in the racks the main ones such as 'Rip Rig & Panic', 'Domino', 'With Benny Golson', 'I Talk With The Spirits', 'In Copenhagen' and 'Slightly Latin'. The last of these was probably the most elusive but is one of my faves. If your main preference is the CD medium you can't go wrong with the box, which has pretty good mastering. The quality of the sessions is so uniformly high that it pays to go the whole hog and get the box. There's also a bonus live cut CD with Andrew Hill of 'A Stritch In Time'.

I'll bet it sounds excellent. I have a few of those UK Riversides which were also licensed from Interdisk. Including a couple of Cannonball's, in fact. They are usually quite cheap to buy and invariably deliver the goods, sound wise.

With todays events things are still very unstable there so I'm personally avoiding it. As soon as things stablise, I'm back. Certainly won't be 16 months, more like a few weeks hopefully.

Thanks for that ! I was wondering if it was 'Space Oddity'. Very nice string arrangements on that album. Wonder if he also did the synth work? Yes, the vinyl is on Vortex, that is the label I was thinking of. Throughly recommend that Alan Skidmore 'Once Upon A Time'. It sort of reminds me of the two Kenny Cox Blue Notes in terms of style so if you like these at all you will be impressed I think.

Amen re: 'Inner Glow'. Very nice session. That one really took some getting hold of, didn't realise you'd sold a copy (although I seem to recall a thread from last year which reported one for sale in the UK so that must be it). I think Mosaic might be including it on a Hutcherson Select.

Like that Zawinul a lot. I have the vinyl released by that subsidiary of Atlantic (forget for the moment what it was called but the Jarretts were released on this one too). Still haven't seen a copy of 'Chitinous' in the shops but when I do I'll snap it up. Never realised Buckmaster did the Bowie string arrangements. Which albums in particular? 'Heart is a Lotus' is growing on me slowly. Of the recent batch of Duttons the real standout for me is the Skidmore (at least of those I haven't heard before). Lovely album.

From what I gather these were more than just detonators but were rucksack and explosive jobs like the previous attack. Somehow the explosive failed to go off. Possibly the work of one bomb-maker. Same thing has happened in the past with the IRA. The good news (such as there is) is that the trail left should allow the police to track down the culprits and extract lots of info. If do they find them and when they have finished extracting from them, maybe they could then load them into the back of an RAF C-130 Hercules and drop them out somewhere over the English Channel in sacks before their swift entry to 'paradise'.
