Ruth L. 'One Night With Blue Note' 45
sidewinder replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yep, it was great to hear Alfred Lion's speech on the night. The infectious enthusiasm for the music and drive for the label really shines through, even though he had retired so many years before. I wonder what Poppa Lou thought of Hank's comment? -
I'll second and third that. Any sax section with Ray Warleigh in it is sure to sound great. Case in point Kenny Wheeler's big band. Wish that Philips (Universal) would reissue Warleigh's debut album recorded in 1970 and produced by Scott Walker, of all people. It's well worth hearing. Of note in the documentary was the mention that Stevens was very politically motivated in a positive sense and that this drove the high degree of interplay, low level of 'leader ego' in his recordings.

$300 seems to be about the going rate for a near mint copy.

The recent TV 'Jazz Britannia' documentaries had a very warm tribute to John Stevens, identifying him as the driving force behind the 'Little Theatre Club' workshops along with Evan Parker and Trevor Watts. Sadly John Stevens passed away some years ago I think - this one must have been one of his last albums. Danny Thompson is one of those guys who crosses between the folk and jazz scenes - well known in folk circuits for his work with 'Pentangle'. Tony Carr seems to crop up all over the place in 60s and 70s - Alexis Korner's CCS, the Johnny Scott Quintet, John Cameron... anyway, I digress....

One more belated very happy birthday. Hope it was a good one !

%$$$$$$$ !! Once again I am livid for them removing this fine channel from my old analog satellite service.

Sidewinder, it was 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zep performed by Alexis Korner's jazz rock brainchild CCS. The John Cameron album 'Off Centre' is now available, certainly in the UK, and you should be able to obtain it from the usual. Very good album. ← Thanks Roger. Exactly - it's the Led Zep cover that they used for TOTP and which ingrained itself on the brain of many during the 70s. Incidentally, I remember seeing Cameron drummer Tony Carr furiously playing the bongos on this program as part of a performance of Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing.' Easily the best thing on that single.. I've got the Cameron 'Off Centre' on vinyl and am a huge fan of it. Nevertheless I'll most likely pick up the CD too in addition to the remaining Vocalions.

Sure is. The kick-off track ('Till Then') is also exquisite. For my money it is (along with 'Happenings') Bobby's best album but then I'm biased.

Wow - wonder how Pat actually came to own the Lucky Thompson horns? So may great LT sessions from the 40 and 50s in particular - the Milt Jackson Savoys, 'Walkin', the Oscar Pettiford sessions, the list is endless. An incredible musician. I think he had left jazz for good even before I got into the music all those years ago but for many years I still hoped that one day he would return to active playing and touring. Hope he's now in peace.

Splendid. I'll stick my order in right now !

Mingus Complete 1959 Sessions Mosaic Lp set
sidewinder replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I have the Mingus 'Complete 1959' Mosaic and both of the recent 'legacy' CD issues and prefer the LP set but there again, that's my personal preference. The LP set is a Q-LP, unlike the Candid which is in the lighter format. Once again, the superb acoustics of Columbia's 30th St studio is captured most faithfully. My only complaint about the Mingus 'Complete 1959' Mosaic is that I don't get to play it enough.. -
My understanding is that this will be a 'one off' from Mosaic. See my comments confirming this forthcoming vinyl issue on a thread of several weeks ago. Scott confirmed that they had no current intention to follow up with other vinyl, sadly. Nice though that they are making this one available.

I love the Anita set but the JJ on vinyl is ******* brilliant. A very close call.

July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
sidewinder replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for your adding your thoughts on this set, Edward. Will most likely pass on this set but it sounds like a good one. -
Stacks of great stuff over the past few days: Many of the Uptown LPs including Dameronia, JR Monterose and Wess/Coles All of the Philly Joe Jones Galaxies Stack of great Prestige and Milestone twofers Japanese King, Atlas and Toshiba West Coast LPs including Shelly Manne, Rumsey's All Stars, Art Pepper, Toshiko etc. Sadly part of a shop closing-down sale..

I caught him live just the once - with a Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band, late in life. I know that he made a notable impression over here in the UK when he toured with Gillespie, Stitt, Monk and Blakey as part of that 'Giants of Jazz' package. Indeed a giant..

July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
sidewinder replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I was playing disk one of the Anita O'Day this morning and was again astonished at the very high level of the performances. This is one heck of a set; for anyone into vocals and West Coast Jazz in general, don't miss it. -
Re: Jimmy Rowser. He's on that DVD of the Les McCann Trio In Concert that Rhapsody have issued with the Sonny Criss All Stars.
-
Yes - and a brief glimpse of Joe Zawinul too. Great movie all round..

There's also that appearance by Tubby Hayes' group in the 60s Hammer Horror movie 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors'. I really must get hold of that one. Another favourite is the movie 'Kes' by Ken Loach - low budget 60s British movie. That one has a very nice soundtrack by John Cameron with appearances by Harold McNair on flute and also Ronnie Ross. Nice movie too, which captures the Northern grittiness of the era very well.

Just picked up a few OJC LPs. The Red Rodney 'Modern Music From Chicago', the Elmo Hope 'Meditations' and the Sleet 'All Members'. Have also hit upon a motherlode of 1970s Prestige and Milestone twofer sets (most of the Dolphys, Stitt, Parker, Mulligan/Baker, Oliver Nelson etc) and this is a very good way for the vinyl enthusiast to pick up much of the material captured in the OJCs in good sound.
